Medina will host annual Gary Gross Memorial Wrestling Tournament on Saturday

Wrestlers from 14 schools will be competing in Medina’s annual Gary Gross Memorial Tournament on Saturday.

The tournament, which begins at 9 a.m., is held annually in memory of Medina Coach Eric Gross’ dad Gary who was a long time supporter and booster of the Mustangs wrestling program.

In addition to the host Mustangs the tournament field will include wrestlers from Albion, Lyndonville, Holley-Kendall, Roy-Hart/Barker, Amherst, Attica/Batavia, Byron-Bergen, Fredonia, Grand Island, Pioneer, Randolph, Spencerport and Starpoint.

Rams edge Lakemen; Panthers, Tigers win

Avenging an early season 64-53 loss, Roy-Hart edged visiting Wilson 62-59 in a Niagara-Orleans League boys basketball game this evening.

Trailing 33-32 at the half, Roy-Hart used a 15-9 third period scoring edge to rally into a 47-43 lead at the three-quarter mark. Dan Aquilina scored 7 and Sam Brunning and Matt Aquilina both hit threes to key that Rams rally.

Brayden Ricker then scored 8 points in the final quarter to help the Rams lock up the win.

Rem Albee finished with 18, Dan Aquilina 15 and Ricker 12 to lead Roy-Hart which improves to 3-4 in N-O action.

Blake Martin scored 21, Aidan Neumann 15 and Ryan Hough 11 for Wilson which slips to 2-5.

Newfane 55, Albion 34
Building up a 32-15 half-time advantage, Newfane went on to defeat visiting Albion 55-34 to stay unbeaten at 6-0 in N-O competition.

Ben Dickinson had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Landon Braman 9 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Panthers.

Blake Preston scored 11 and Wesley Olles 10 to pace Albion.

Akron 68, Barker 59
Akron improved to 7-1 in N-O action with a 68-59 home court win over Barker which slips to 2-5.

Ben Gerstung scored a game high 21 to lead Akron as Brale Abrams added 13 including three threes.

Luey Castro and Aidan Mescall both scored 17 for Barker.

Letchworth 68, Lyndonville 27
Letchworth downed host Lyndonville 68-27 in a non league contest.

Third period sparks Mustangs past Lady Rams

Moving on top to stay with a late third quarter scoring burst, Medina went on to down visiting Roy-Hart 56-47 in a Niagara-Orleans League girls basketball make-up game this evening.

Trailing 31-28, Medina put together a key 12-0 scoring run late in the third period, including 5 by Iyla Lilleby and a three-point play by Nevaeh Moss to really into the lead for good at 40-31.

Lilleby and Alexa Demmer both had 7 in the third period which finished with the Mustangs up by seven, 40-33.

Keeping the momentum, Medina opened the final period with a 9-2 run to extend the advantage to 14, 49-35. Lilleby, Demmer, Honesty Hill and Angel Mulcahy all contributed points to that scoring spurt.

Roy-Hart could get no closer than seven after that as Ariel Smith had two late baskets and Mulcahy one to help the Mustangs lock up the win.

Lilleby finished with 14, Demmer 12, Moss and Hill 9, Smith 8 and Mulcahy 4 for the Mustangs.

Courtney Aquilina scored 11 and Lila Brigham and Kylie McOmber 10 each to pace the Lady Rams as Adella Dukes added 9, Madison DiNieri 4 and Juliana Terwilliger 3.

Roy-Hart led 10-7 at the end of the first period and the contest was deadlocked at 19-19 at the half.

Medina and Roy-Hart are now both 2-4 in N-O action.

Notre Dame 64, Holley 28
Notre Dame defeated Holley 64-28 in a Genesee Region League game as Emma Sisson scored 14 and Gianna Falleti 13 to lead the way.

Alivia Wolf scored 13 and Samantha Bates 12 to lead Holley.

Channel Cats set pace at All-League meet

Labiak also won the 200 Freestyle and Hashem the 100 Freestyle.

Roy-Hart/Barker  took first place in four events to lead the way at the annual Niagara-Orleans League Boys All-League meet at Akron this evening.

Sean Labiak won the 200 Freestyle (1:55.49) and Carson Hashem the 100 Free (:53.02) for the Channel Cats. Labiak and Hashem also teamed up with Nick Armenia and Garrett Glyshaw to win both the 200 Medley Relay (1:48/83) and the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:41.50).

The Albion quartet of Finn McCue, Joel Slack, Matt Kania and Mark Ames teamed up to win the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:39.14). McCue also took first place honors in the 50 Free (:23.28).

Newfane’s Noah Kneeland was a double winner in the 500 Free (5:10.19) and 100 Breaststroke (1:07.29)as his Panthers teammate Dylan Lamont won the 200 Individual Medley (2:14.52).

Akron’s Dawson Stone was a double winner in the 100 Butterfly (:58.16) and 100 Backstroke (:57.20).

The girls All-League meet will be held at Newfane on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Holley surges past Barker in third period

A big third quarter keyed Holley to a 58-42 win over visiting Barker in a non league boys basketball game this evening.

Leading by a slender 23-21 margin at the half, Holley outscored Barker 21-10 in the decisive third period. Vinny Golisano and Destin Kuyal each scored 6 and Ben Cox 4 to lead that uprising as the Hawks opened up a 44-31 advantage heading into the final period.

Golisano finished with a game high 23 and Kuyal 19.

Luey Castro scored 15 and Isaac Monaco 10 to pace Barker.

Third period sparks Newfane girls to victory over Medina; B-B tops Kendall

Pulling away in the third quarter, Newfane went on to down Medina 55-44 in a Niagara-Orleans League girls basketball make-up game this evening at Medina.

Leading by a narrow five point, 31-26, margin early in the third period, Newfane closed the quarter with a key 14-2 run to open up a 17 point, 45-28 advantage. Kameryn Boyer scored 6 and Sienna Bowers 4 to lead that uprising.

Medina could get no closer than 11 in the final period.

Newfane also got off to a quick start grabbed an 18-11 first quarter lead as Mallory Schultz scored 12, including a pair of threes, to key that surge.

The Lady Panthers maintained a seven point, 28-21, lead at the half as Bowers had 8 in the second period. Honest Hill likewise had 8 to keep Medina close.

Schultz finished with a game high 21 and Bowers 19 to pace the Lady Panthers as Boyer added 8, Julia Noonan 4, Bailee Patcyk 2 and Jenna Stolzenberg 1.

Hill finished with 10 to lead Medina as Iyla Lilleby and Nevaeh Moss added 8 apiece, Alexa Demmer 7, Ariel Smith 6 and Angel Mulcahy 5.

Newfane improves to 4-2 and Medina slips to 1-4.

Medina next hosts Roy-Hart at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in another N-O make-up contest.

Byron-Bergen 33, Kendall 28
Byron-Bergen trimmed host Kendall 33-28 in a Genesee Region League make-up game.

Janessa Amesbury had 14 for Byron-Bergen which led 15-13 at the half.

RBM hockey team nipped in overtime

For the third game in a row, the Roy-Hart/Barker/Medina Club Hockey team played an overtime game and eventually lost this time to St. Mary’s of Lancaster 4-3 on Sunday.

After trailing 1-0 after one period, the Knights found themselves behind 2-0 before Jack Goehle (Newfane) scored the first of his Hat Trick for the evening on passes from Luc Wagner (Medina) and Lawson Wallworth (Roy-Hart).

St. Mary’s took 3-1 lead later in the period, but Goehle tallied his second from Joel Harris (Barker) and Wallworth.

RBM tied the game in the third period on Goehle’s third from John Peracciny (Roy-Hart) and Wagner, which stood for the remainder of the game necessitating the OT.

St. Mary’s scored the winner at the 2:52 mark.

RBM’s next game is Saturday against Dunkirk/Fredonia at home beginning at 4:50 p.m.

Wrestlers earn N-O All-League honors

Weekly high school sports schedule

The Niagara-Orleans League swim season will wrap up this week with the holding of the Boys All-League meet at Akron on Tuesday and the Girls All-League meet at Newfane on Friday, both at 5:30 p.m.

Wrestling action this coming week will be highlighted by Medina’s annual Gary Gross Memorial Tournament on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

The N-O boys and girls basketball campaigns will both begin the second half of the season this week with the defending champion Newfane boys (5-0) and Wilson girls (6-0) teams both leading the title races. The Newfane boys will host Albion on Tuesday and visit Barker on Thursday while the Wilson girls will host Roy-Hart on Friday.

The Medina boys, which have won three in a row, will host Roy-Hart on Thursday.

Mustangs have 4 N-O wrestling champions

Four Medina wrestlers captured individual weight class championships at the annual Niagara-Orleans All-League Tournament held today at Albion.

The Mustangs quartet of champions included Reece Senske (116), Luke Duffina (124), Brody Fry (190) and Sawyer Kingsbury (215) who is a repeat winner.

In their title bouts, Senske decisioned Rian Czaja (Newfane) 5-0, Duffina pinned Ryley Mahoney (Newfane) in 5:14, Kingsbury decisioned Ty Mangoine (Newfane) 6-0 and and Fry pinned his Mustangs teammate Conor Crandall in 1:56.

The Mustangs also had Liam Castricone (131) and Brennan Allen (160) earn third place finishes.

Newfane, which captured the team title, had six champions including Jaxson Tocco (101), Jakob Lucinski (108), Sean Milczarski (138), Ayden Buttery (145), Ayden Gillings (152) and Colin Doxey (170).

In the finals, Tocco pinned Jacob Sommers (Akron) in 1:22; Lucinski scored an 18-2 technical fall over Tyler Zimmerman (Akron); Milczarski pinned Tyler Goff-Brown (Wilson) in 2:5; Buttery pinned Andrew Danner (Wilson) in :41; Gillings decisioned Christian Klonowski (Akron) 11-2 and Doxey decisioned Ronan Klug (Roy-Hart/Barker) 9-6.

Medina’s Sawyer Kingsbury works toward a title match decision win over Newfane’s Ty Mangoine at 215 lbs.

Wilson had a trio of winners including Victor Cusatis (131), Jacob Stephenson (160) and William Wortkoetter (285).

In the finals, Cusatis decisioned Luke Fay (Roy-Hart/Barker) 13-8; Stephenson pinned Richard Doxey (Newfane) 4:30) and Wortkoetter decisioned his Wilson teammate Hamza Merrick 6-2.

Roy-Hart/Barker also got third place finishes from Lucas Kimber (116), Joe Jopp (124), Joel Hickman (152) and Neil Stanczyk (190) as did Albion from Drayson Shonerd (108) and Mason Lynch (285).

Newfane, which went 5-0 during the regular season, capped off its title campaign by winning the All-League Tournament with 197.5 points. Wilson was second with 146.5 followed by Medina 128, Akron 105, Roy-Hart/Barker 88 and Albion 28.

In the 190 lb. final, Medina’s Brody Fry works toward a win over his Mustangs teammate Conor Crandall.
