Channel Cats celebrate N-O swim titles

Contributed Photo – The Roy-Hart/Barker boys and girls swim teams have both repeated as Niagara-Orleans League champions. The Channel Cats boys team finished at 7-1 to share the title with Albion while the girls squad went 7-0-1. During a break at practice several of the Channel Cats took a minute to proudly display their championship plaques and All-League meet patches. Medina, Lyndonville and Holley-Kendall have champions at Gary Gross Memorial Tourney

Host Medina, Lyndonville and Holley-Kendall all had individual weight class champions at the Mustangs annual Gary Gross Memorial Wrestling Tournament today.

Reece Senske (108) and Sawyer Kingsbury (215) both earned titles for Medina as did Sebastian Temich (160) for Lyndonville and Hunter Jewell Smith (285) for Holley-Kendall.

Senske scored a major decision 8-0 win over Zak Massaro (Grand Island) in his title bout. He advanced to the finals with a pin and a sudden victory decision win.

Kingsbury, who likewise advanced to the finals with a pin and a decision win, pinned Lucas Clark (Starpoint) in 3:11 in his championship bout.

Temich pinned Ronan Klug (Roy-Hart/Barker) in 4 minutes in the finals after scoring a pin in the semis.

Smith, who registered three first period pins to reach the finals, decisioned Chris Howatt (Pioneer) 3-1 in his title bout.

Albion’s Jaxon Lynch works against Wyatt Opferback from Pioneer.

Medina also had Austin Seefeldt (160) and Conor Crandall (190) place third and Liam Castricone (131) fourth.

Lyndonville had Justin Holmes (101) and Ty Holmes (124) both place second.

Holley-Kendall had William Kruger (152) finish fourth.

Roy-Hart/Barker had Lucas Kimber (108), Joey Jopp (124) and Luke Fay (131) all place third.

Malachi Smith won the 190 lb. title for Byron-Bergen.

Attica-Batavia won the team title as Medina placed second and Byron-Bergen third.

Medina’s Lathan McEwen-Miller competes against Greyson Romano (Lyndonville).

Lyndonville’s Brody Hazel works against Wyatt Bryman (Attica/Batavia).

Rangers race past Purple Eagles

Racing out to a commanding 27 point, 36-9, half-time advantage, Spencerport went on to defeat host Albion 67-37 in a non league boys basketball game this afternoon.

Kyle Milburn scored 15 on five threes, Hunter Streb 11 and Tony Kanaley 10 to lead a parade of 10 point getters for the Rangers which enjoyed a 55-25 advantage after three quarters.

Kyle Radder scored 14 to lead Albion as Blake Preston added 6, Seth Krenning 5, Brody Vercruysse and Tyler Cody 4 and Peyton Robinson and Jayden Daniels 1 each.

Starpoint 61, Roy-Hart 55
Starpoint trimmed Roy-Hart 61-55 in a non league game at Niagara County Community College.

Jackson Griesmer scored 27 and Jack Kempf 20 to lead the Spartans.

Dan Aquilina tallied 20 and Rem Albee 13 for the Rams.

Third period sparks Albion girls past Newfane

A big third quarter scoring edge keyed Albion to a 41-32 win over visiting Newfane in a Niagara-Orleans League girls basketball game this evening.

Leading by a narrow 16-14 margin at the half, Albion outscored Newfane 18-6 in the decisive third period to open up a 34-20 advantage. Madison Hughson scored 6 and Julia Knight and Paige Newton 4 each to lead that uprising.

Hughson finished with 14 and Knight 10.

Sienna Bowers scored 12 and Mallory Schultz 10 to pace Newfane.

Albion is now 3-4 and Newfane 4-3 in N-O action.

Defending champion Wilson improved to 7-0 with a 58-28 win over Roy-Hart.

Peyton McInnis scored 17 to lead Wilson as Cait Cliffe and Bella Thrush both added 11.

Lady Bees post win over Lady Tigers

Jumping out to an 11-0 lead at the outset, Byron-Bergen went on to down host Lyndonville 49-34 in a Genesee Region League girls basketball game this evening.

Up 16-3 at the end of the opening period, the Lady Bees went on to lead by margins of 18-12 at the half and 34-22 after three quarters.

Janessa Amesbury led Byron-Bergen with 14 points as Riley Shallenberger, Olivia Senf and Victoria Rogoyski each added 9.

Ashlee Stephens scored 15 and Addison Dillenbeck 7 to lead Lyndonville.

Alexander 39, Holley 30
Breaking away from a 28-28 deadlock, Alexander outscored Holley 11-2 in the decisive final period to claim a 39-30 G-R win.

Alyssa Kramer scored 15 and Madison Bezon 13 to pace Alexander.

Samantha Bates scored 13 and Alivia Wolf 10 to lead Holley.

Albion and Roy-Hart/Barker score three wins at the girls N-O All-League swim meet

Albion and Roy-Hart/Barker both claimed three wins at the annual Niagara-Orleans All-League girls swim meet held this evening at Newfane.

Albion’s Kiera Sidari won both the 200 Individual Medley (2:31.61) and the 100 Butterfly (1:14.47). She also teamed up with Mia Olles, Autumn Flugel and Willow Gaines to win the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:51.08).

Roy-Hart’s Julia Miles was a double winner in the 50 Free (:26.51) and 100 Free (:57.82). She also combined with Ava Achtyl, Sophia Santella and Abigail Glyshaw to win the 400 Freestyle Relay (4:06.16).

Host Newfane also scored three wins taking the 200 Medley Relay (3:05.59). the 100 Backstroke with Lauren Enderton (1:10.49) and the 100 Breaststroke with Kimberly Schmitt (1:16.09.

Akron’s Audrey Garverick was a double winner in the 200 Free (2:10.98) and the 500 Free (6:03.80).

Byron-Bergen wrestlers down Lyndonville

Byron-Bergen downed Lyndoville 40-24 in a Genesee Region League wrestling match this evening.

The Bees combined pins by Travis Shallenberger (124), Roman Smith (152) and Jeremiah Romero (190) with techical fall wins by Brendin Galves (138) and Solomon Smith (145) and two forfeits to earn the victory.

Justin Holmes (108) and Sebastian Temich (170) both registered pins for Lyndonville which also got decision wins from Chanse Amsdill (101), Ty Holmes (131), Ben Doolan (160) and Patrick Hargrave (285).

Rams nip Mustangs on basket at the buzzer

A basket at the buzzer earned Roy-Hart a thrilling 43-41 victory over Medina in a Niagara-Orleans League game at Medina this evening.

Rem Albee scored on a driving layup at the buzzer to give Roy-Hart the narrow win and a sweep of the season home-and-home series with Medina. The Rams edged the Mustangs 63-60 in the earlier season meeting at Roy-Hart.

Albee had a total of 7 points in the decisive final stanza including a three which put Roy-Hart up 41-39 after Medina had taken its first lead of the evening at 39-38 on a basket by Jerrell Nealy followed by a free throw by Justin Pitts.

Medina retied tied the game at 41-41 on a rebound basket by Nealy with five seconds to go setting the stage for Albee’s dramatic game winning buzzer basket.

Dan Aquilina scored 14 and Albee 12 to lead Roy-Hart as Jayden Swygert added 6, Brayden Ricker 4, Jackson Webber 3 and Matt Aquilina and Sam Bruning 2 each.

Nealy led Medina with 16 as Pitts had 9, Elijah Doxey and Cole Callard 6 and Trevon Shine 4.

The Rams held narrow leads of 11-7 after the first quarter, 26-24 at the half and 32-30 after three quarters.

Roy-Hart is now 4-4 and Medina 3-3 in N-O action.

Newfane 64, Barker 33
Landon Braman scored 14, Nate Snow 13, Brayden Seitz 10 and Ben Dickinson grabbed off 14 rebounds to lead front-running (7-0) Newfane to 64-33 win over Barker (2-6).

Luey Castro led Barker with 16.

Leading 32-22 at the half, the Panthers used a big 17-3 third quarter scoring edge to break the game open. Braman netted 8 during that stretch.

Akron 67, Wilson 25
Building up a 27-13 half-time advantage, Akron went on to down Wilson 67-25 and stay just a half game off the pace at 8-1.

Brale Abrams scored 17 and Ben Gerstung 14 to lead the Tigers.

Aidan Neumann had 8 for Wilson which slips to 2-8.

Alexander 80, Holley 40

Alexander roared out to a 43-12 half-time advantage and went on to defeat host Holley 80-40 in a Genesee Region League game.

Dylan Pohl poured in 31 to lead the Trojans.

Destin Kuyal scored 13 and Chris Mosier 10 for Holley.

Girls Basketball
Kendall 44, Rochester Prep 25
Ava LaMay scored 16 and Brooke Rodas 11 to lead Kendall to a 44-25 win over host Rochester Prep in a non league girls contest.

Kendall led 26-12 at the half.

Kendall cagers even score with Pavilion

Avenging an early season overtime road loss, Kendall defeated visiting Pavilion 52-49 in a non league boys basketball game this evening.

Hunter Richards and Louis Conte both scored 12 and Austin Werth 10 to lead the way for Kendall whch led 29-25 at the half. Richards also grabbed off 14 rebounds and Conte 10.

Conte had a basket and a free throw and Richards a three-point play and a free throw in the final minutes to help the Eagles close out the victory.

Lady Tigers best Purple Eagles

Taking charge at the outset with a big first quarter scoring burst, Lyndonville went on to down visiting Albion 53-22 in a non league girls basketball game this evening

Lyndonville roared out to a 20-4 first quarter lead as Ashlee Stephens and Addison Dillenbeck each scored 8 and Bella Groves 4.

Keeping the momentum, the Lady Tigers went on to lead by margins of 32-11 at the half and 43-15 after three quarters.

Stephens finished with 21, Dillenbeck 19 and Groves 8 as Alexa Robinson added 3 and Kayli Miller 2.

Madison Hughson scored 20 of Albion’s 22 points as Julia Knight had the other basket.

In another non league contest Alexander defeated Barker 82-25.
