Megan Dix

‘Mrs. Dix did absolutely nothing to put herself in a compromising situation. In fact she did everything a good citizen, a good wife and a good mother should do. Unfortunately because of being at the wrong place, and wrong time, and unfortunately because of the sole act of one person became the victim of the murder we are speaking of today.’ – Brockport Police Chief Daniel Varrenti

BROCKPORT – An Arizona woman who formerly lived in Brockport has been arrested in the murder of Lyndonville resident Megan Dix, 33.

The suspect encountered Dix at a small South Avenue parking lot while Dix was taking a lunch break on Friday. After a few seconds of encountering Dix, Holly Marie Colino shot Dix in the head, Brockport Police Chief Daniel Varrenti told reporters during a news conference this afternoon.

He was joined by Patrick O’Flynn, the Monroe County sheriff. They both stressed that Dix, an assistant manager at Lowe’s in Brockport, did nothing wrong.

Colino, 31, returned to the area in recent days. She was arrested on Monday evening after putting a gun to the head of an employee at Sticky Lips BBQ in Henrietta. Colino was taken into custody at the Holiday Inn on Jefferson Road.

Dix, married with an 8-year-old son, was the victim of a random act of violence on Friday, Varrenti said.

“Mrs. Dix did absolutely nothing to put herself in a compromising situation,” the police chief told reporters. “In fact she did everything a good citizen, a good wife and a good mother should do. Unfortunately because of being at the wrong place, and wrong time, and unfortunately because of the sole act of one person became the victim of the murder we are speaking of today.”

Colino was to be arraigned on charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. She was to be arraigned by Village Justice William Andrews in Brockport Village Court.

Colino is a Rochester native who lived in Brockport for about three years, from 2011 to 2014.

Law enforcement didn’t provide details why she returned to the area.

They made it clear that Dix wasn’t at fault, in any way.

“Let me reiterate this, this woman, meaning Mrs. Dix, was not involved in any criminal activity whatsoever,” Varrenti said. “She merely left Lowe’s, went to a place she commonly went to, for the purpose of peace and quiet and to eat her lunch while she enjoyed a 30-mnute break. As a result of just that alone she was the victim of this murder. She played absolutely no role other than being at the wrong place at the wrong time and encountering this suspect. It just goes to show how the value of life has deteriorated.”

Woman admits to killing Lyndonville mother, gives insanity defense

Megan Dix

ROCHESTER – Holly Colino admitted in a Monroe County Court to murdering Megan Dix, a Lyndonville wife and mother who was having a lunch break on Aug. 25, 2017.

Colino admitted to all charges against her, including second-degree murder, in court on Monday, but she said she shouldn’t be held criminally responsible due to her mental health, according to a report from the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.

In admitting to the charges, Colino said a “mental disease or defect” was the true culprit in the crime.

Dix, 33, was sitting in a parked vehicle, on her lunch break in a Brockport park on South Avenue last summer. She worked at the Lowe’s in Brockport.

Colino shot Dix in the head. Colino was arrested three days later.

In court, she said she randomly chose someone to kill. Her attorney, Mark Foti, said she has little recollection of the crime.

Colino was ordered by the court to undergo a mental health examination. Two doctors independently determined she suffered from a psychotic mental disorder on Aug. 25, 2017, the day of the murder.

Colino is in treatment. Her case will now be handled by the Commissioner of Mental Health with a mental competency hearing to be scheduled. She is expected to spend the rest of her life in a psychiatric facility or hospital, according to the report from the Democrat and Chronicle.

Colino, 31, grew up in East Rochester. She had been living in Arizona. Brockport Police Chief Daniel Varrenti said after her arrest the murder was a random act of violence. Dix did not nothing wrong to provoke the attack, the police chief said.

Dix is the youngest of eight siblings. She married her high school sweetheart, Chris. Their son CJ is now 9.

Police: Woman arrested for murder was ‘lucid’ in admitting to crime

Holly Marie Colino appears to have posted several bizarre videos on YouTube, Facebook, leaving many to question her mental health

Holly Marie Colino

BROCKPORT – The woman who has been arrested for killing Megan Dix of Lyndonville appears to have posted several videos on YouTube and Facebook recently that have many people questioning her mental health.

Holly Marie Colino was arrested on Monday in Henrietta after she allegedly pointed a gun at the head of a woman walking to work at the Sticky Lips BBQ.

Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn and Brockport Police Chief Daniel Varrenti said Colino is the person who shot Dix in the head while she took a lunch break on Friday at a small parking lot on South Avenue, not far from Lowe’s, where Dix was an assistant manager.

Colino, 31, killed Dix in a random act of violence, Varrenti told reporters in a news conference on Tuesday.

Colino is a Rochester native who was living in Arizona. She lived in Brockport from 2011 to 2014 and had five contacts with the police, but none were of a criminal nature, Varrenti told reporters during a news conference on Tuesday.

He and O’Flynn were asked about Colino’s mental health.

“She was lucid with us,” O’Flynn said. “She spoke and admitted to the crime.”

Varrenti also addressed the question about the suspect’s mental health.

“She also knew what she did was wrong,” Verranti said. “She was able to provide details of the crime that nobody else would have known other than the person who was involved.”

Verranti on Saturday held a news conference asking for the public’s help with the case. He said the public provided assistance in solving the case, but he declined to give more information.

“We’re not going to get into the specifics and all of the details,” he told reporters.

Colino had two weapons on her that were legal in Arizona, but not in New York, Verranti and O’Flynn said.

The case remains under investigation.

“I’m confident with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and our police department that we’ll have no stone unturned,” Verranti said.
