Recalling Medina’s first N-O soccer title

Contributed Photo – Medina’s 1992 Niagara-Orleans League champion soccer team included, in front, Josh Lacy, Jon Barhite, Gerry Lewis and Andy Page. In the back row are Ron Brigham, Frank Battaglia, Andy Benz, Adam Kinne, Joe Foster, Tim McKeown, Derek Dutcher, Allan Anderson, Mark Underdown and Coach Steve O’Dea.
The Medina/Lyndonville boys soccer team enjoyed a very successful season this fall emerging as Section VI Class B1 co-champions after tying Tonawanda 2-2 in overtime in the tile contest.
That title recalls Medina’s first soccer championship when Coach Steve O’Dea’s Mustangs captured the Niagara-Orleans League crown in 1992.
Medina compiled a 9-1 N-O record that season to win the league title by two games over runner-up Akron (7-3).
A late season 7-1 win over Albion put a lock on the championship for Medina. Allan Anderson, an exchange student who scored a team leading 25 goals on the season, netted four in the clinching win over the Purple Eagles.
Medina’s only league loss was a narrow 2-1 setback against Akron in the N-O finale. The Tigers avenged an earlier season 4-1 loss with that victory.
The Mustangs other N-O wins were 8-1 and 7-1 over Roy-Hart, 3-2 and 2-0 over Wilson, 4-1 and 4-0 over Starpoint and 4-1 in their first meeting with Albion.
Medina placed five players on the N-O All-League first team including Anderson at forward, Yusef Abbasey at midfield, Joe Foster and Derek Dutcher on defense and Ron Brigham in goal.
The Mustangs also had a quartet of second team All-League honorees including forwards Mark Underdown and Tim McKeown, midfielder Josh Lacy and defender Andy Benz.
McKeown had 9 goals on the season, Underdown 6 and Abbasey 4.
In would be some 22 years before the Mustangs would again claim the N-O crown. The combined Medina/Lyndonville team ended that drought by capturing the crown in 2014 and also again in 2019.

Today for sports fans watching football on TV is as much a part of Thanksgiving as the turkey dinner.
For Orleans sports fans the long standing Albion vs. Medina high school football rivalry was once the feature event on Thanksgiving Day.
From 1924 to 1936 the rivalry contest was played on Thanksgiving afternoon often in very challenging playing conditions.
In fact, three of those games (1926, 1928 and 1934) ended in a 0-0 tie as game stories report that in each case the field was a sea of mud.
The other 10 contests saw the teams both emerge with five victories.
Albion won the first Turkey Day Classic 12-2 in 1924 as John Donovan scored both touchdowns.
Medina answered back with a narrow 12-6 win in 1925 on touchdowns by Herb Blount and Brit Cooper.
Then sandwiched between the two muddy 0-0 ties in 1926 and 1928 Medina claimed a 19-6 victory in 1927 as John Kelly scored two touchdowns.
Medina’s most lopsided win in the Turkey Day series came by a 31-6 margin in 1929.
The following year was much closer as Medina nipped Albion 6-0 on a fourth quarter touchdown by Montgomery who recovered a teammate’s fumble at the goal line and plunged over the line for the score.
Medina also scored a slender 6-0 win in 1933 on a TD by Red Howe.
Albion closed out the Thanksgiving Day series by winning four of the last six contests by margin of 19-6 in 1931, 14-0 in 1932, 24-12 in 1935 and 27-0 in 1936.
Edward Nesbitt, John McKenna and John Page took turns scoring touchdowns for the Purple and White in the 1931 game while Don Armstrong accounted for both scores in the 1932 contest.
Albion’s last two wins in the Turkey Day series capped off outstanding seasons for the Purple and White which won 24-12 in 1935 to finish at 6-1 and 27-0 in 1936 to complete an undefeated 8-0-1 campaign.
Tommy Colella, who went on to star at Canisius College and then with the Cleveland Browns, scored two touchdowns in both of those contests. Henry Dragon also scored once in the ’35 game and twice in ’36. Joe Rosato scored Albion’s first touchdown in the 1935 game.
The following year the rivalry contest was moved up to Armistice Day (now Veterans Day) and continued to be played on that day until 1958 when it became part of the regular season schedule.

Medina’s 1934 squad included, in front, White, Hare, Garrett, Bacon, Clapp, Monagan, Root, Palmer, Acer, Clark and Hagerman. In the middle row are Stilwell, Smith, Lynch, Rumsey, Hay, Pegelow, Padoleski, Wanecski and Maines. In the back row are Coach Evans, R. Clark, Heveron, Hungerford, Ward and Prahler.

Recalling Roy-Hart’s first N-O soccer title

In the middle row are Jeremy Silsby, Steve Bochniarz, Brandon Wittcop, Joel Belliveau and Marc Morse. In the back row are Coach Carl Husung, Matt Bishara, Cole Bronson, Isaac Bath and Billy Loeffler. Missing from the photo are Chris Barr and Billy Richards.
Ending a 20 year drought, Roy-Hart claimed the Niagara-Orleans League boys soccer title this fall using the combination of a 3-2 win over Wilson and a 1-0 win by Newfane over Akron on the final weekend to claim the crown outright. The Rams finished at 7-3 with Akron (6-3-1) and Newfane (6-4) close behind.
The Rams exciting title win recalls Roy-Hart’s equally exciting first N-O championship run in 2000.
That fall Coach Carl Husung’s Rams captured their historic first championship by winning their last three games in a row while Starpoint lost its last two.
A narrow 2-1 late season loss to then front-running Starpoint (8-2) dropped Roy-Hart a game off the pace at 6-3.
However, the Rams rebounded strongly to win their final three games beginning with a 1-0 overtime victory over Wilson on a goal by Billy Loeffler.
And just as was the case this year the Rams then got some huge help down the stretch as Starpoint dropped two games in a row losing 1-0 to Akron and 2-1 to Medina to fall to 8-4.
Capitalizing on the opportunity,Roy-Hart moved into first place at 8-3 with a 3-0 win at Newfane on goals by Loeffler, Aaron Hall and Chris Barr to clinch at least a tie for the N-O title.
The Rams then completed their historic league campaign by nipping Medina 1-0 on a goal by Cole Bronson with just four minutes remaining to claim the N-O championship outright.
The Rams finished the N-O title season at 9-3 a game ahead of Starpoint and Albion both at 8-4.
