Another success for Lizzy’s Loves event

Contributed Photo – The Medina High Class of 1986 held its annual Lizzy’s Loves charity golf event this past weekend. Held in memory of their classmate Liz Monell, the event included a golf tournament, which had a large field of 104 golfers, and a basket raffle at Shelridge as well as a Scavenger Hunt in downtown Medina. The two day event raised a total of $20,500. That includes $17,000 which will go to the Knights Kaderli Memorial Fund and $3,500 for scholarships. Those scholarships include $2,000 to a MHS Band member in memory of Liz Monell, $1,000 to a MHS student in memory of Roosevelt Armstrong and $500 to the Orleans Niagara BOCES Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Program taught by Mr. Rakonczay. Over the six years of the event $65,000 has been raised including $55,000 for the Knights Kaderli Memorial Fund and $9,500 for scholarships. Here members of the Knights and Monell families and members of the Class of ’86 display the check for the amount raised.
Elba wins Midget League 9U playoff title

The Elba players and coaches include Coach Molly Anderson, Coach Jessica Crawford, Alex Magoffin, Jacob Shuknecht, Axel Pridmore, Xander Johnson, Tucker Crawford, Maverick Crawford, Henry Anderson, Carmine Augello, Head Coach Corey Crawford, Matthew Judd, Charlie Torrey, Derek Mudrzynski, Ethan Armbrewster, Gianna DiRosa and Teddy Torrey. Medina Mustangs FC claims division title

Making it seven wins in a row, the Medina Mustangs FC rallied past the host Celtic Brigade 3-1 Sunday to lock up the Buffalo District Soccer League 2nd Division regular season championship.
Trailing 1-0, Medina rallied for two goals late in the first half to key the win.
The Mustangs tied the game on a goal by Ryan Laruffa off a corner kick by Casey Winiecki.
Trent Jones then netted what proved to be the game winner as he stole the ball and scored on a breakaway.
Medina got an insurance goal late in the second half by Greg Husung off a pass from Kyan Mathieu.
Now at 8-2, Medina will close out the regular season with another game against the Celtic Brigade next Sunday at Kenmore West.
The title season is the second in a row for the Mustangs which last summer captured the 3rd Division playoff championship which earned the team a promotion to the 2nd Division.
Dynamites win rain shortened tournament

Contributed Photo – A 4-0 record over the first two days of preliminary round games on Friday and Saturday was enough to earn the Dynamites 16U Travel Team the championship of the Cap Classic Tournament in Cheektowaga as this afternoon’s rain washed out the scheduled semifinal and final round contests.
Somerset Slay captures softball titles

Contributed Photo – The Somerset Slay softball team has made a clean sweep of both the Minor Division regular season and playoff championships in the Lake Ontario Youth Baseball/Softball League. The Slay went 10-0 during the regular season and was seeded No. 1 for the playoffs where they defeated the Roy-Hart Queen Bees in the quarterfinals, the Lyndonville Orange in the semifinals and the Roy-Hart Rays 17-10 in the championship game on July 3rd. Barre captures Albion Midget League’s 12U Division playoff championship

Regular season front-runner Barre completed a sweep by capturing the Albion Midget League 12U Division playoff championship with an 11-1 victory over Hamlin ‘A’ this afternoon at the Midget League Field.
Hamlin ‘A’ took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a triple by Mike Allen.
However, Barre answered right back with three runs in the home half of the first on a three-run triple by Luke Snyder to take the lead for good.
Barre then broke the game wide open by erupting for 8 runs in the fourth inning on a three-run triple by Hudson Armer and RBI hits by Owen Legan and Robbie Hickman.
Thailer Seibert pitched the first five innings for Barre allowing 1 hit and striking out 8. Brody Furness came on to hurl the sixth inning and complete the win.
Ryan Warner pitched the first three innings for Hamlin ‘A’ registering 8 strikeouts.

Dynamites score two more wins at Cap Classic
For the second day in a row the Dynamites 16U Travel Team has scored a pair of victories at the Cap Classic Baseball Tournament which is being played in Cheektowaga.
The Dynamites first blanked the Royals Elite 8-0 this morning as Jax Brinley scattered 4 hits and struck out 4 over 5 innings.
Ryleigh Culver led the way at the plate with 3 hits.
The Dynamites scored 3 times in the fourth inning without the benefit of a hit as 3 errors keyed the uprising.
Brody Fry had an RBI single in the fifth inning and the Dynamites locked up the win with 4 more in the sixth as Evan Poeller had an RBI double and Culver an RBI single.
The Dynamites then downed the Lockport Storm 9-1 this afternoon as Gavin Heideman hurled a 3 hitter with 11 strikeouts.
The Dynamites scored once in the first on an error and twice in the second on a single by Ehren Pettapiece and a double by Poeller.
Three run scoring burst in both the third and fourth innings then broke the contest open. A two run error keyed the third inning scoring spurt. Fry then doubled in one run in the fourth and Culver singled in another.
Improving to 12-3, the two wins advance the Dynamites to Sunday’s semifinal and final rounds of competition.
Green misses the cut at the tourney in France

It was a rough last few second round holes this morning for Medina’s Melanie Green who has missed the cut at the Amundi Evian Championship which is being held at Evian-Les-Bains, France.
When stormy weather caused play to be halted in the second round Friday afternoon Green was 3 over par through 14 holes.
That put her 1 over for the tournament and just 1 shot back of the projected cut line of even par as she had posted a 2 under par 69 during Thursday’s opening round.
However, Green had three bogies and 1 birdie over her final 4 holes this morning to finish with a 5 over par 76 for the round .
She finished the tournament with a 3 over 145 total for her two rounds which was 3 shots over the cut line of even par.
The Amundi Evian Championship is one of the five majors on the LPGA schedule.
Dynamites score two wins to open tourney
The Dynamites 16U Travel Team scored a pair of victories today to open competition in the Cap Classic Baseball Tournament being held in Cheektowaga.
The Dymnamites opened with a 12-0 run rule victory over the 716 Patriots.
A huge 8 run first inning quickly broke the contest wide open as Evan Poeller had a double, Ryleigh Culver a two-run double, Jax Brinley a two-run single and Vinny Gray an RBI single.
Tyler Kroening tacked on a two-run double to key a 4 run second inning.
The Dynamites then turned back a late inning rally to nip the Angels 4-3.
The Dynamites built up a 4-0 lead by scoring once in the first on a hit batter, twice in the fifth on singles by Culver and Brody Fry and once in the sixth on a ground out off the bat of Culver for what proved to be the game winner.
The Angels made the finish exciting by rallying for 3 runs in the seventh inning.
Improving to 10-3, the Dynamites will play two more games in the tournament on Saturday.
Storm delays Green’s second round in France
Stormy weather has caused play to be suspended late in today’s second round of the Amundi Evian Championship at Evian-Les-Bains, France in which Medina’s Melanie Green is competing as one of 8 amateurs in the 132 player field.
When play was suspended Green was 3 over par for the day after 14 holes after shooting a 2 under par 69 in Thursday’s opening round. She had 6 bogies and 3 birdies over the first 14 holes.
Currently 1 over for the tournament Green is 1 shot over the projected cutline of even par.
The field will be cut when the second round is completed Saturday morning. Green needs to pick up at least one shot over the final four holes to make the cut.
