Yates candidate seeks support in moving town forward

Posted 11 September 2017 at 8:10 am

Editor:

Tuesday, Sept. 12, is the Republican Primary Election for our Town of Yates. Historically primary turnouts are very light.

Right now our Town of Yates is at a very important “Crossroads.” Do we want to stay “Status Quo,” or do we want to “move our Town forward?”

I will continue to try and meet as many town residents between now and Tuesday. I promise to fight to move our town forward!

Let’s prove history wrong with a large turnout on Tuesday.  Voters, show that you care about our Town by voting in the Primary.

I am in the last box to the right of the ballot. I would appreciate your vote on Tuesday.

Thank you,

Howard Pierce

Highway superintendent says Gaines town supervisor grossly misrepresents facts

Posted 11 September 2017 at 8:06 am

Editor:

I have been the Highway Superintendent for 24 years, and have never written response letters or engaged in political finger pointing until this current leadership in Gaines. The gross misrepresentation of facts and accusations (made in public) of employees has left me no other option in order to let Gaines people know the truth and how words are twisted.

As to the town’s water loss. The Town Superintendent was notified of the irregularity of water use/loss. For how long? I’m not sure, but I do know our department was the last to learn about this. Ms. Culhane’s knowledge of the water loss prompted an investigation – someone, somewhere was getting free water and someone was going to be held responsible. With her limited understanding of how water lines and meter pits work, I was the target of said investigation, was (and continue to be) the object of her accusations. You may have heard this “water stealing” story brought up if you were approached in recent door to door campaigning.

When our department was informed of this water situation, David Rustay (highway employee) and I checked every meter pit throughout the Town of Gaines. We found one faulty check valve in the meter pit, owned and operated by the town of Ridgeway. This was immediately turned off and the town of Ridgeway was contacted. We agreed to place a bi-directional water meter in the pit. This was installed July 8th. Between July 8 – October 24 there was 382,000 gallons of water that went through this meter. That is 382,000 gallons of water that went through the bi-directional meter was water that would have been previously un-metered.

We believed we found the loss and fixed the problem. This was not good enough. Ms. Culhane was not satisfied with this result. In her mind, there had to be employee infraction and “suspicious” water loss activities; there were violations that needed to be found. Wendel Engineers was hired to do an investigation into the meter pits. Because of the number of meter pits, this investigation was scheduled to take 3 days to complete. Well, it took 3 hours and it cost the tax payers over $9,000. The best $9,000 suggestion Wendel could come up with for an improvement was to padlock and paint inside the pits.

At the October 2013 board meeting, there were 40 people in attendance. This was extremely out of the ordinary – on any given month there are between 6 and 8. It was clearly evident that she invited people to attend and provided some invited individuals with a question. This “staged” meeting was solely for her benefit.

Want another water story? Ms. Culhane denied the continuance of shared services with the town of Murray, which we have done for many years. Murray was going to upgrade/purchase a water meter reader. Our (one time) cost to Murray was going to be $5,500. Instead, Ms. Culhane purchased our very own drive by water meter reader for $30,000. But, this reader will only be used quarterly, for approximately 10 hours per year. How cost effective is that?

Our department is a team that works well together. We are well-skilled and knowledgeable about the jobs and duties we perform. We know what we need, what is useful, what is (or is not) cost effective and what works. When I offered my opinion, based on 24 years of service to the Town of Gaines, that this purchase was not needed, necessary nor cost effective. Ms. Culhane said it was her decision.

Respectfully submitted,

Ron Mannella

Conservative Party chairman states support for candidates in town races

The Town of Gaines Republican Committee with Joe Grube as chairman without a platform of substance has self-endorsed to run against Carol Culhane, the current Gaines Town Supervisor. He has managed to make it to one Town Board meeting this year, and several in previous years. Carol has a record of accomplishments noted by prior letters in the newspapers, and postings on the Orleans Hub by people that do take the time and have the interest to attend the board meetings.

Tyler Allport a political newcomer with a Republican endorsement having attended very few if any Gaines Town Board meetings, also without a platform of record, is running for a position on the Town Board. Susan Smith, Town Board member with a record of serving her constituents with honest dedication, is also running for town board.

Susan Heard “self endorsed” Republican candidate is the retiring Orleans County Treasurer who is quietly running for Gaines Town Clerk against Debra Mitchell to possibly try her hand at “Double-Dipping.” She has labeled Carol Culhane as a bully. Ms. Heard along with her ilk ought to look in the mirror. People who are honest with themselves and want good fair government in Gaines, will vote for Carol, Susan and Debra. Proud to know all 3!

The Town of Murray with its adolescent goon squad is placing graffiti on some of Joe Sidonio`s campaign signs. The GOP Committee led by Ron Vendetti has managed to find a person who is politically unknown but apparently will do, for their endorsed candidate to run against Joe Sidonio for Murray Town Supervisor. Robert Miller could be the ” Rubber Stamp-Double Dipper” that the Murray Rinos are looking for. Mr. Miller’s Town Board meeting attendance has been scarce, and his platform is nil.

Joe Sidonio who has been working very hard the past 2+ years to post the short comings and problems within the Town of Murrays` government out in the open and in a way that the people can understand. Vote for Joe Sidonio for Supervisor of the Town of Murray. He has demonstrated his ability, his knowledge, dedication, and commitment, with a solid fiscal platform having attended all town board meetings. Mike Whalen a conservative minded Republican is running for a seat on the Murray Town Board. He would be a good change on the board. Joe and Mike will give Murray’s people good honest government and deserves your whole-hearted support and vote. I have known Joe for a number of years but have recently got to know Mike. Proud to support the both of them!

The so-called Republican Committees in some towns have a way of making a person feel unwelcome and intruding on their time during the endorsement application process, and the interview itself. They already have a candidate lined up beforehand.

Robin Nacca, a successful business woman with businesses in Erie County and elsewhere and makes her home in the Town of Barre, is a candidate for Town Supervisor running on a platform of open and fiscally responsible government. Robin carries the Conservative endorsement and deserves your vote in the Republican Primary. She is her own person, and not a former government employee potential “Double-Dipper.” Robin is hard working, honest, and forthright with qualifications to serve her constituents well. Having known her and her husband Alex for a number of years, I support her proudly. Vote for Robin Nacca.

Richard DeCarlo Jr. Barre Town Justice is seeking the same position in the upcoming elections. Good man. Vote for Richard DeCarlo Jr.

In Kendall there is a race for the Town Clerk position. It is said that a technical glitch took place at the Orleans County Board of Elections that gave Amy Richardson, the current Town Clerk, the unearned Republican line on the ballot. This information reported by Republican Chairman John Becker of the Kendall GOP Committee. Becker also stated that Amy did not approach the committee seeking support or an endorsement. Amy has a mind of her own and supports the people she feels are the best for whatever position. The committee has a problem with that and Amy knew she wouldn’t get their support. By not asking for their support, it allowed the committee to endorse a person more to their liking without having to feel guilty.

I would think that the Endorsed Candidate must feel used by the Kendall Republican Committee with their inability or wherewithal to get her name placed on the Republican line. It worked out OK in my eyes, but I would think as a whole, the people that make up the committee should feel pretty small. Chairman Becker knows all about glitches during his political career and one in particular that cost the tax payers a large sum. I have known Amy and her husband Jim for years and fully support Amy. Vote for Amy Richardson Kendall Town Clerk.

In the Town of Yates, the Republican Committee in trying to throw a road block in front of Paul Lauricella Jr, who will be running for a seat on the Yates Town Board. The Committee found it necessary to endorse Harold Suhr, a Democrat, to run on the Republican line. Paul, who is a registered Conservative, is fiscally and smaller government minded, and will work hard to control spending in the Town of Yates. I have known Paul and his family for about 7 years, and I fully support him. Vote for Paul Lauricella Jr. Yates Town Board. Jim Simon is the endorsed Conservative Candidate for Supervisor Town of Yates. Vote for Jim Simon.

Please vote for all the Conservative-endorsed candidates and hopefully this might begin to change the political landscape in Orleans County, which suffers from being the highest taxed, and close to the highest unemployment rate, and the lowest per capita disposable income in New York State.

Note: The Conservative Ad in the Lake Country Pennysaver was paid for by the Orleans Co. Conservative Committee, and not by myself.

Gaines candidate says new leadership needed for town to attract residents, businesses

This letter is written for Gaines Republican voters.

The campaign process has been and continues to be a humbling and rewarding experience. I am truly honored to be your endorsed candidate for our Town Board, and hope to remain your choice after this Tuesday’s Primary Election.

As the Hazard Insurance Manager and Banking Officer at a major national bank, I have great experience in budgeting, leading, and aggressive problem solving. All qualities that we desperately need and should demand of our elected officials. Unfortunately, this has been lacking in recent years.

We need a group of leaders that will have our best interests at heart, and will do what is necessary to implement long term solutions to the very real problems that face our Town.

I make the pledge now, that if I remain your nominee, I will not bring nonsensical lawsuits against citizens at the expense of the tax payer. I continue to promise not to treat my constituents as second-class citizens, or force out fellow Town Officials, if things do not go my way. I will not hide behind my title or create excuses when tough situations present themselves, rather create actual and sustainable solutions that benefit all constituents.

Our next leadership will be faced with issues that stem from the failings and shortcomings of current leadership. We will have to find ways to increase and retain the Town’s population. We cannot remain on the path of continuously losing residents and expect there not to be long-term financial consequences.

The next leaders will need to appeal to businesses to locate in our Town to increase cash flow for all. We have the people, talent, and location to be the Town that other areas wish to emulate. I promise to do whatever it takes to make this happen, as this is my home, and I want to see us all prosper.

Thank you for your support,

Tyler James Allport

Republican-endorsed candidate for the Gaines Town Board

Culhane’s husband says she is ‘a courageous fighter’

Posted 10 September 2017 at 12:11 pm

My name is Jerry Culhane.

I’d like to tell you about my wife Carol. I know her better than anyone.

As a Marine Corps combat veteran, I have earned the right to call someone a patriot. My wife, Carol is a true American Patriot. She serves her Country every day while at her post as Gaines Town Supervisor.  She is not a politician but a community servant working for you and not for the power, the pay or the prestige.

As Supervisor, Carol has demonstrated her loyalty to the Town of Gaines, the Republican philosophy and the voters. When she is asked, what party are you she always says the same thing, “I love my God, I love my Country and I believe in the Constitution.”

Leading by example, she has streamlined government, reducing spending and cutting taxes. Managing the water sales, making sure everyone pays for the what they use, getting rid of the over levying of the water districts and on and on. You are paying less today for the same high level of governmental services than when she began 6 years ago.  Under Carol’s leadership Gaines is the second lowest taxed town in the county.

Carol is a caring and compassionate woman. She has dedicated her life to her family but can also be tough as nails, a courageous fighter. We operated a Christmas tree farm for 18 years and felt we served our community well. She has been a great support of the local communities all the way to Washington, DC with her services to the military and the veterans. Carol has donated, worked for, assisted and given to many, many charities and causes over the years.

We as a family have seen some wonderful times together and some very trying times as life happens but she is always there. She’s loyal to a fault, hardworking and devoted. Gaines is our home and Carol has committed herself through dedication and duty for the betterment of our town for all of us.

I was asked just recently, after 32 years of knowing Carol, what does she mean to me? My response is “everything.” I fully support her loyalty to the Town of Gaines and all the good work she has done.

Respectfully,

Jerry Culhane

Gaines official says town finances in great shape

I am writing this letter to let the Town of Gaines residents know that our town does NOT need to be rescued and repaired. Why would you want to fix something that is not broken?

The Town of Gaines is in great hands and doing well!

1. Our budgets are consistently balanced. A flat tax will only raise taxes and discourage new businesses and new residents. Gaines is the 2nd lowest town for tax increases in all of Orleans County for the past 10 years! Your town is in great fiscal shape!!

2. All budgets follow NY State Controllers guidelines. The baseline is the Supervisor’s budgetary item with all Elected Officials. The steps in reaching a final budgetary decision involve accountants and all elected officials as it moves through its process. The entire procedure is open to the public ending with final approval following a public hearing. Decisions are reached by consensus, as what is financially correct for the Town of Gaines.

3. All Town Board members receive all incoming information from the Supervisor as she receives them. All information is addressed and dated with all board members names to review. All of us have the power to table if we feel unprepared or need more time to research subject matter. All vouchers are reviewed and audited mainly by all Town Board members on a monthly basis before meetings take place. You can find all information on line at our website (click here). We are also on FB and Twitter.

4. We started with few businesses in the Town of Gaines and have grown today. The Master Plan Goals you gave us continue yesterday, today, tomorrow.

5. “The New York State Comptroller is the State’s Chief fiscal Officer who ensures that State and local governments use taxpayer money effectively and efficiently to promote common good” (osc.state.ny.us). We are not even close on their radar for towns that are in fiscal stress.

Attending meetings on a regular basis prepares and informs all interested residents the Town of Gaines Goals, and the process it is incorporated in running our Town Business. Fact: The Gaines Republican Nominating Chair/Gaines Supervisor Candidate has only attended one meeting in the last 10 months and not one budget public hearing. Republican Nominating Committee member/Town Clerk candidate attended 2 meetings the last 10 months. The youngest endorsed Gaines Republican Councilman Candidate has attended 0 meetings.

If any doubts have entered your mind about the Town of Gaines please call Supervisor Carol Culhane or any of the Council people including myself. Our names and numbers are listed on our Town’s web page.

Sidonio tries to tackle serious issues in race marred by dirty tactics

Posted 9 September 2017 at 8:39 pm

Editor:

I am writing this letter in support of my long-time friend and business associate, Joe Sidonio. The dirty tactics that have become the norm of this primary campaign for supervisor of the Town of Murray have brought the political process to a shameful low.

Mr. Sidonio has kept to the high-road from day one. He has been open and honest about his past issues that were brought up, which really have no bearing on the issues of the town and his ability to govern, but his own party, headed by Ron Vendetti, has taken the low-road with the use of these dirty tactics which is an embarrassment to the political process.

What is that old saying, “People who live in glass houses should not be throwing stones.” We have candidate and sitting councilman, Bob Miller, who daily promotes this hatefulness.  So much for the State Trooper code of ethics, so much for his lack of character. What happened to debating the issues?

Mr. Sidonio has brought serious financial issues concerning the town to the table and has been re-buffed at every turn. We have sitting councilman and candidate Hendel, ex-educator and school principal, sitting silent for months condoning these bullying tactics and not addressing the real issues at hand. What struck me most was a campaign shirt, worn by Mr. Hendel with the words truth, ethics and accountability. The truth is they have no platform, ethics none showing, and they should be held accountable for their actions. Are these the people that you want to continue to represent your town?

Do the right thing on September 12th, take your town back, do not let a few supposed politicians sully your town’s reputation any longer. Start a new beginning with Mr. Sidonio. He is the right man for the job for Murray Town Supervisor.

Culhane likes to take credit for Gaines successes, while disrespecting many others at Town Hall

LOL.  The Gaines Supervisor has a relative in Rochester writing you about rumors here in Gaines. Rumors are not facts. Elections are supposed to be about facts, and the facts are the problem, so here are a few facts:

  • Claims tax rate reductions are a result of her hard budget work. That is misleading, to put it nicely. The fact is on tax re-valuation years, as the assessed value of property goes up, the tax rate should go down. Then, the use of additional fund balance or “cash surplus” to cover any difference in budget growth will also make the tax rate go down. (I have been Deputy Budget Officer for 25+ years, I know how this works. For those who don’t understand what I mean, please don’t hesitate to call me.)
  • Took credit for correcting the over-levying of water districts, but she knows I personally pointed it out to her, and explained it. ($175,000 fund balance divided by 89 parcels, we overpaid, do the math). She saw this fund balance growing for years, prior to me attending a Budget hearing, but apparently didn’t understand it. It was corrected only after I told her in an e-mail I would be at a meeting to address this in public. Now, she takes credit for “finding” the error. We both know what is true, don’t we? I have the e-mails to prove it. (Water District 4 has approx. $85,000 still unaccounted for, based on resolutions I can find.  Did our money pay for the new meter reader, or the overspent water districts?)
  • She dismissed the Town Attorney with 20+ years of the Town’s legal history, and prior to taking office.
  • Illegally eliminated the Planning Board. (She calls her friends the “posse” and then puts them on boards. One “posse” member appears to pay for her political ads).
  • Degraded and/or harassed every single employee in the Town Hall until they left. Talks to new employees inappropriately about other current employees; ask anyone who has worked there.
  • Fails to answer questions or is outright rude. Don’t believe me, attend a Board meeting. If you are a “posse” member, you may stand up and say “good job” but if not, a letter will appear in the paper bashing you from one of the “posse” that she uses as her henchmen, as I well know. It can be from someone who wasn’t even at the meeting.
  • Claims disrespectfully that past Supervisors “didn’t know what they were doing” at a public meeting, no less. She’s the only one who knows everything…hmmm?
  • Touts Shared Services. In fact did exactly the opposite: Purchased a $30,000+ water meter reader to be “independent.” (Was this a budgeted item?) Currently we pay a small fee to the Town of Murray ($150 per quarter/$600 per year) to read our meters; it will take 50 years to be “independent.” Not only does this lack common sense, it goes completely against the Governor’s Shared Services Plan.
  • Failed to do appropriate paperwork or follow Civil Services laws for hiring and firing employees.
  • When the Clerk was asked who she was appointing Deputy Clerk, her response was “they didn’t tell me yet.” The Law clearly allows the Town Clerk to appoint her own deputy, not the Town Supervisor or Town Board. Apparently, no experience or skills were required.
  • Claims she isn’t a politician, but shows up for photo ops when she has nothing to do with a new business opening; or new houses being built; or businesses that are thriving. She’s a real politician who wants to take credit for everything. On the other hand, public servants know who they are, we work every day helping people, we care about doing the best for people, we fix things we can fix, for people we don’t even know because it’s what true public servants do. (Everybody knows I’m a public servant). Public servants don’t do photo ops or serve coffee. Having a “coffee pot on” doesn’t make the cut for seriously helping people. I witnessed a gentleman saying he had been to the town hall numerous times, and still no one was helping him, she invited him for another cup of coffee. I wonder how many more times he has to visit to resolve an issue?
  • Use of Public Funds to advance herself and her agenda: Political campaigning in our water bills; with personal messages that are clearly “politicking” (paper, copies & stamps at town expense). Primary Election in 2016 to oust Republican Committee members in an attempt to get the “posse” members on the committee ($2,500+)
  • She is now forcing a Primary election in 2017, when she did not ask to be endorsed by the Republican Committee, nor did Councilwoman Smith; the Committee had to seek our own candidates.. There was no indication they even wanted to run, we thought they wanted to retire. ($2,500+)

(Side note: Joe Grube is a really smart guy and was the obvious choice for a number of positions. The local Republican committee is not a “posse”; the committee chose him as our Chairman, and we also chose him to run for Supervisor. He’s smart, he’s articulate, with personality plus.

He has had a stellar career in Cattaraugus County, was so highly thought of, after retirement, they wanted him to stay. I was recently told by my counterpart in Cattaraugus they still miss him. Joe is an expert on many fronts: budgets, managing employees, union contracts, grant writing, public relations, public speaking skills, and Town government (as former councilman in the Town of Otto, NY). Throwing mud, and hoping it sticks, seems to be the current Supervisor’s last hurrah, and shame on her. P.S. He works from home, travels occasionally, but she wants you to think he will be unavailable, which is not true).

And one last laugh:  The Supervisor takes “exception to an entire candidacy built on vengeance and getting even” but again, fails to see her own words apply to both herself and Councilwoman Smith. The Supervisor and Councilwoman Smith use their political position to put their property interests ahead of the town. The truth hurts, but it’s a fact.

Gaines Voters:  We don’t need a relative from Rochester to tell us who is best for our town, the actual facts speak for themselves. It’s time for new leadership. Vote Joe Grube!  A man of true character and a true public servant. Vote Republican Primary, September 12th – Noon to 9 p.m.

Sincerely,

Susan Heard

Grateful neighbor says Sidonio is honest and generous

I am writing you to voice my support for Mr. Joe Sidonio for Murray Town Supervisor. Mr. Sidonio has been my neighbor now for nearly 5 years. During this time Joe and I have had the opportunity to get to know each other very well. Joe has been a great neighbor and it disgusts me to see how this political season has turned into a barrage of personal attacks.

As long as I’ve known Joe he has been a great family man who cares passionately about his family his friends and his town. Joe is unselfishly running for supervisor of Murray because he wants what is best for our town and for the residents of our town.

Since I have moved to Murray my taxes have been steadily rising to a point where it is getting difficult to afford them. This past year was the worst with my property taxes rising nearly $1,000 in one year from reassessments. I am sure like many of you, increases like that are a burden on you and your family. It would be refreshing to have a person like Joe who cares deeply about our town and our residents to be overseeing our taxes and the way they are being handled.

It has been a real pleasure living next to Joe and their business.  This past winter was difficult for me because my snowblower had died the previous year and I was left trying to shovel snow by hand. Without me asking and without any hesitation, Mr. Sidonio was kind enough to go out of his way while plowing out their business lots to take the time to plow my driveway for me multiple times. Without his help my wife who is a nurse would not have been able to make it to work on multiple occasions.

I am thankful for Joe as a neighbor and I am hopeful that the Murray residents will make a great choice by electing him as our supervisor.

Joe’s work ethic and honesty is refreshing to see and I know he would carry that over to the Town of Murray as their supervisor!!!

Murray resident would like to see detailed proposals from candidates

I write this letter in frustration as I try to evaluate candidates for Murray Town Supervisor. It is no secret that residents of Murray are frustrated with our current government: both Bob Miller’s and Joe Sidonio’s flyers refer to it. What frustrates me more is that the solutions provided are similiar, and aren’t very specific. It is almost as if one candidate copied the other candidate’s platform.

I realize most politicians usually aren’t very specific about what they are going to do. But this is as local of government we are going to get. It seems we should be able to be really specific. Here are my specific questions: (Will the candidates be able to give specific answers?)

1) Local Laws No. 2 and No. 3 of 2017 do not read like laws written by conservative republicans (which everyone claims to be). Will the candidates support a repeal of this governmental overreach?

2) What specific steps will be taken to reduce taxes?

3) What specific steps will be taken to balance the Town Budget?

4) How does your conservative ideology form your selection criteria of what should or should not become a town law?

Bonus Points when the answer doesn’t include dependence on the State of New York.

Personally, I feel Joe Sidonio has done a better job laying out the answers to these questions, but I am still willing to be swayed. Is it too much to hold out hopes for detailed platform positions?

Neighbor claims he has suffered 20 years of harassment from Sidonio

Posted 8 September 2017 at 11:02 am

Editor:

It has been brought to my attention that Joe Sidonio, candidate for Murray Town Supervisor, has developed a hobby of taking pictures of my property and posting it on his Facebook page. After his recent posting of my address, my car has been broken into and beer bottles have been thrown at my front door and on my property. With the primary election quickly approaching, I feel the need to not only defend my family and myself, but to inform residents of the kind of psycho he truly is.

First of all, to Mr. Sidonio: do not bring my wife into your campaign for public office. Do not hold my wife responsible for my actions, just as I do not hold your wife responsible for your actions, now or in the past. I have a lot of respect for your wife and mother-in-law and the hard work they alone have put into a successful business.

In response to the pictures that show cars parked along the roadside in front of my home: that photo was taken three years ago when Holley high school students and their parents were taking photos on prom day. For the past seven years, my wife and I have generously opened our home for senior pictures and prom pictures, and all he does is open his mouth.

Per the code, parking is allowed at any residence, not just ours. It allows for parking along the road for example, if you have a yard sale or graduation party. This is different than a business that has regular traffic in and out all day, everyday. His obsession of taking photos of my property makes me wonder what other photos he has accumulated. I have seen him standing on the roof of his truck lurking with binoculars in the back of my property.

As for the photo of my posted property sign (my property borders his), you should know that the public persona he uses while out campaigning is all fake. He knows exactly why I signed my sign the way I did. I try my best to keep my property maintained and up to code and I hope I have not offended anyone. I suffered 20 years of harassment by him. He has handed out hunting maps for his nuisance permit to out-of-town hunters, with my property on it knowing it is posted.

He has tried to flood me out clearing wetlands and pushing trees and debris into Sandy Creek resulting in increased flooding on my property. When the County and Town authorized help clearing the creek, he refused to allow them an easement onto Hurd property to do this. He is constantly shooting into my property so my family and friends don’t feel safe walking on the property, and the Boy Scout Troops stopped camping on my property because of the shooting.

A DEC officer was on my property and witnessed the haphazard shooting for herself. When she went to speak to him she came back in tears and had to call her superior officer. At that time, he put restrictions on the nuisance permit. He has falsely accused me of stealing more than once and he has infringed upon my right to have peaceful quiet enjoyment of my property time and time again. He has tried to force me out but I am still here unlike many of my previous neighbors.

Unfortunately, these examples do not even scratch the surface of the harassment my family has endured throughout the years. He is sneaky and dishonest and has the nerve to call others unethical and immature. This man wants to be supervisor of our Town?

My feelings are the same feelings he generates from anyone who may have a different opinion than him or who doesn’t agree with him. I have many good reasons to vote against him and I hope after reading this you will see that this is not a person that should be our Town Supervisor. Without a doubt, he will put his usual ‘spin’ on my words, but I welcome anyone to come, sit on my porch and we can discuss this in more detail.

Culhane has been successful reducing Gaines taxes

Posted 7 September 2017 at 7:31 pm

I am writing this letter to tell you why I am supporting our Gaines Supervisor, Carol Culhane, for re-election.

As a property owner and senior citizen in the Town of Gaines, I have been pleased to see her and the Gaines town board work hard to reduce our property taxes four years in a row.

Carol Culhane came to the supervisor position with a bookkeeping background.  She worked with the town board initiating annual independent audits from 2012 forward, gleaning information which led the town to implement new policies and procedures, untangling inconsistencies from the past.

In addition, Carol’s tenacity and determination contributed to solving the water loss and billing discrepancies, which has resulted in the water department actually generating revenue.

Why should we change our leadership when we are benefiting from an efficient town government with the second lowest tax rate in the county?

Krull has shown ingenuity as Carlton highway leader

Posted 7 September 2017 at 7:28 pm

This is just a quick note to my fellow Town of Carlton Republican voters as a reminder that this Tuesday will be the Republican primary.

Dave Krull will be on the ballot. He is running for another term as our town highway superintendent, and I for one support him enthusiastically.

I have known Dave for many years, since he was a superintendent for Keeler Construction and then subsequent contractors such as Crane Hogan. Dave worked on several of my heavy highway construction projects. I always found him to be a hard working, thoughtful and innovative man who could accomplish difficult tasks given the sometimes limited resources available – a can-do style I attribute to farmer’s ingenuity.

I have been a resident of the Town of Carlton for 31 years. I supported Dave’s first run for highway superintendent, and have been happy with that decision. Since Dave took the reins of the Carlton DPW, I have seen more work, and better quality work, being accomplished than in any of the previous years. In the event that problems have arisen, Dave has been only a phone call or a text message away, and has attended to situations expeditiously, and with good cheer.

I think Dave Krull deserves another term as our highway superintendent. Please consider supporting him on primary day.

It’s Primary season and signs are everywhere. Signs work great at getting the candidates’ names out in the public but do very little to actually tell us much about these candidates’ characters.

Ed Houseknecht is running for Shelby Town Supervisor. You will see his signs out in the community but this is what the signs won’t tell you.

I have known Ed both personally and professionally for over thirty years. I first met him when he was the Superintendent of Public Works for the Village of Medina. It was in October of 1989 following the horrific storm that came through the Village. Power lines were down on the ground, trees went through roofs, branches and limbs were everywhere, and roads were impassable.  Anyone who was a resident at the time will remember this very well.

Mayor Marcia Tuohey decided early in the aftermath of the storm that all aspects of the cleanup project were to go through Ed. He was constantly present on the job, just about 24/7. Ed was always working with his crews and was able to make outstanding decisions in the middle of the chaos. When anyone in the community offered to help, all Ed asked for was food and coffee for his crews.  Ed managed to accomplish all of this and stay within the Department of Public Works’ budget.

It seemed to me that he had accomplished just about the impossible, and that was my first impression of Ed Houseknecht. I could easily describe numerous other examples, but suffice it to say that my positive impression has only strengthened over the years – cool under pressure, effective, and a natural leader.

You can read all of the signs and all of the ads in the newspapers, but this is what they don’t tell you.

Thank you all so much for your time.

Respectfully submitted,

Several primaries show some discord in GOP paradise

Might there be trouble in Orleans County’s G.O.P. paradise? What could he be referring to, you might ask.  After all, way more than 90% of countywide offices have been held by the folks with pachyderms beside their names for the past thirty years!

Nonetheless, fault lines have emerged within G.O.P. ranks. The mere idea that the Grand Old Party’s choices for town supervisor will be determined by September 12th primary elections in at least four Orleans towns is shaking parts of the G.O.P. establishment. The nerve of some people! Normally, when the choice is between an occasional “jackass” and someone designated by an elephant, it is an easy call for many supporters of the G.O.P.

It seems that no matter how many Orleans County assets they gave away, or put at greater risk, stalwart G.O.P. legislators—especially Callard, Johnson, and Eick—were shielded by the pachyderm and re-elected. Of course, the former Chairman is no longer there, having resigned under “mysterious” circumstances.

When a person with an office attempts to behave responsibly in Orleans, he, or she, risks being shown the door by the G.O.P establishment. The former G.O.P Elections Commissioner can no doubt attest to that. Hopefully, she will satisfy the establishment’s lust for payback for awhile.

Then there is that impossible to control Sheriff. The G.O.P. establishment had to swallow hard on that one. Though he is willing to work with anyone whose intentions are positive, what good is a Sheriff to the establishment if he won’t play ball with the Party hierarchy?

On top of everything else, there is the fact that the G.O.P. faithful are in the unenviable position of having to explain the actions of a President with precious little understanding of his office and even less comprehension of the United States Constitution.

There does, indeed, appear to be trouble in paradise.

Sincerely yours,

Gary Kent
