’92 saw an intra squad county title contest

Contributed Photo – It was truly an intra squad Orleans County men’s softball Division I championship game in 1992 when Medina League champion Sub Delicious nipped Albion champ ERA Morrison 20-19 as most all of the players played on both teams during the regular season. In front are Terry Rich, Jefff Klips, Dan Marek, Frank Hildreth and Pete Panek. In the middle row are Dale Brooks, Chuck Hughson, Pete Madafferi, Mike Talbot, Bob Shaffer, Rex Snyder and Kevin Hamilton. In the back row are Mike Kent, Ivan Madafferi, Mike Hughson, Larry Hughson, Ken Snyder, Ted Lewis, Pete Villa and Brian Fry.
There really was no loser when Medina League Division I playoff champion Sub Delicious faced Albion Division I playoff victor ERA Morrison for the 1992 Orleans County men’s softball title at Medina’s Vets Park.
That was because most all of the players were members of both teams during the regular season as Sub Delicious played on Tuesday night and Morrison’s on Friday. It proved to be a very good split of the two teams combined 20 man roster as the most interesting virtual intra squad contest saw Sub Delicious edge past Morrison’s 20-19.
In fact, the contest saw both teams share the same bench and the same scorebook.
The deciding two runs for Sub Delicious came in the bottom of the seventh inning on RBI singles by Terry Rich and Mike Hughson.
Earlier, Sub Delicious had jumped out to a big 11-1 lead after scoring eight times in the second inning highlighted by a two-run homer by Ivan Madafferi, triples by Mike Hughson and Larry Hughson and a two-run double by Rich.
Morrison’s though battled back to take a 15-14 lead after erupting for 10 runs in the fifth inning highlighted by two-run triples by Ken Snyder and Kevin Hamilton and a two-run single by Ted Lewis.
Sub Delicious answered back with four runs in the home half of the fifth to regain a 18-15 lead as a single by Mike Kent and a double by Jeff Klips sparked that rally.
However, Morrison’s regained the lead one last time at 19-18 by scoring four times in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice by Lewis, a solo homer by Brian Fry, a triple by Bob Shaffer and a single by Snyder.
The final rally though belonged to Sub Delicious which answered back with the deciding two runs in the bottom of the seventh
Mike Talbot, Larry Hughson, Rich and Mike Hughson each finished with four hits for Sub Delicious as did Lewis and Snyder for Morrison’s. Talbot’s hits included a towering three-run homer over the right field fence in the third inning.

NYSPHSAA begins preparing for fall season
LATHAM – The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) conducted two meetings today in response to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s August 24th announcement to begin preparing for the 2020 fall interscholastic athletics seasons on September 21st.
The eleven section executive directors, officers and NYSPHSAA staff met this morning, while the NYSPHSAA COVID-19 Task Force met this afternoon, for the fourth time, since the COVID-19 crisis began impacting high school athletics in New York State.
The meetings were held to examine and discuss the start of the fall sports seasons and analyze guidance from state officials. The NYSPHSAA will continue to review guidance as recommendations and considerations are developed to aide schools with the implementation of interscholastic athletic programs.
“We are encouraged and appreciative of Governor Cuomo authorizing the start of the fall sports seasons for low and moderate risk sports and affording high risk sports the opportunity to begin practicing on September 21st,” said Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director. “As the governing body for interscholastic sports in NYS, our primary role will be to work with schools, coaches and parents to ensure recommended COVID-19 guidelines are practiced vigilantly for the safety and wellness of all student-athletes. Over 200,000 students participate in the fall high school sports seasons and yesterday’s announcement was certainly a positive step for all those athletes.”
“The leadership of NYSPHSAA and eleven sections realize there are challenges to overcome and questions to be addressed in an effort to provide a beneficial participation experience for student-athletes this fall,” said Paul Harrica, NYSPHSAA President and Chair of the COVID-19 Task Force. “Our primary goal is to get students back into an academic setting and then work on athletic participation opportunities.”
The NYSPHSAA’s staff, section executive directors and COVID-19 Task Force plan to meet again prior to the end of the week to continue discussions.
Decisions must be formulized to address the number of required practices student-athletes will need before participating in a scrimmage or contest, the maximum number of contests and games to be permitted during the season and the development of considerations for schools to utilize as interscholastic athletics return to schools and communities throughout the state.
