Medina, Rotary win to remain 1-2 atop the County League 12U Division standings

Maintaining a hold on first place, Medina downed Sandstone 10-0 Thursday evening in an Orleans County Short Season Baseball League 12 U Division baseball game at Butts Park.

Improving to 7-1, Medina got three shutout innings of pitching from both Ryan Pegelow, who registered 7 strikeouts, and Carlos Doval who fanned 5.

At the plate, Pegelow had a double to highlight a four run first inning which also included hits by Hadrian Batista and Aleks Seefeldt. Thomas Miesch had a bases clearing double in the fourth inning which also had hits by Pegeow, Seefeldt and Tim Vasquez. Joe Reese had a double in the fifth frame.

Omer Fugate had two hits for Sandstone.

Rotary stayed just a game off the pace at 6-2 by downing Carlton 19-5 on Thursday.

Four home runs highlighted the Rotary attack which were belted by Noah Harrison, Bryar Dyard, Landon Allis and Jackson Gilbert. Dysard also had a triple as Kaiden Froman and Kai Colmenero had doubles. Froman finished with a total of five hits, Dysard four, Gilbert three and Allis and Colmenero two each.

Sandstone gained a split on the week by downing Elba 8-7.

Josh Showberlein led the way at the plate with a run producing double in the first inning and a three-run single in the third which gave Sandstone an 8-3 lead.

On the mound, Fugate struck out 9 and did not walk a batter.

In another game, St. Mary’s/Barre edged Carlton 4-2.

The regular season will end this week and playoffs are scheduled for September 12.

Standings: Medina 7-1, Rotary 6-2, Carlton 3-5, Sandstone 3-5, Elba 3-5, St. Mary’s/Barre 2-6.

Tuesday: Medina vs. St. Mary’s/Barre at Barre, Rotary at Sandstone, Elba at Carlton, All games at 5:30 p.m.

Thursday: Elba vs. Rotary at the Midget League Field, Carlton at Medina, St. Mary’s/Barre at Sandstone, All games at 5:30 p.m.

Playoffs: The playoffs will be held on Saturday September 12 at the Midget League Field with the semifinals at 10 a.m and 1 p.m. and the finals at 4:p.m. The semifinals will match up the top four regular season finishing teams with No. 1 vs. No.4 and No. 2 vs. No. 3.
