Family is key for retiring Tigers coach

By Mike Wertman, Sports Writer Posted 5 June 2022 at 8:44 am

Photos by Cheryl Wertman – Retiring Lyndonville varsity baseball coach Shane Price with his two youngsters Emersyn and Gatlin.

For over 75 years now Lyndonville High has had a very successful program on the varsity baseball diamond and for the past 20 years the Tigers very successful run has continued under the leadership of Coach Shane Price.

In guiding the Tigers diamond family his teams have earned half a dozen Genesee Region League Division titles, 3 Section V championships and a trip to the state semifinals.

However, now he has decided to step away as the Tigers coach to be able to spend more time with his own personal family team as his two youngsters, Gatlin and Emersyn are now six and three. Gatlin is already playing T-Ball and has signed up for soccer.

“I love the game and love coaching,” he said. “The game will always be there but my kids will only be young once. I love being a dad (Dada or Daddy) and look forward to seeing them grow and running them around as they chase down their dreams.”

Baseball to be sure has been a huge part of his life since he was 12 and he credits three men for being key role models for him over the years – his coach at Hilton High Ory Mee, his father Thomas Price and his long time assistant coach at Lyndonville Mark Hughes.

“What do you say when you’ve been blessed,” he said. “Since the age of 12 I have chased around a little white ball with laces. I was very fortunate to have a great man, Coach Ory Mee, introduce me to the game in seventh grade. My father coached and ran me everywhere fostering my love of the game. And ever since I came to Lyndonville Mark has been that person who has always been there for me as a coach and a teacher.”

Wins and championships are to be sure special to any coach but for Price it has been his players and their futures that are most important.

“I don’t know where I would be without baseball,” he added. “I’ve had some great teams but more than that I’ve had some great kids. It’s what they go on to do in their lives that is the big thing and I’m pretty happy what they’ve done.”

Pal-Mac bests Medina in Class B Regional

By Mike Wertman, Sports Writer Posted 4 June 2022 at 5:40 pm

Photos by Cheryl Wertman – Medina second baseman Tyler Kroening goes high over Pal-Mac’s Paul Goodness  during the Mustangs Class B Far West Regional loss to the Red Raiders this afternoon at Monroe Community College.

Jumping out to a quick first inning lead, Palmyra-Macedon went on to score an 11-1 five inning run rule victory over Medina in the Class B Far West Regional game this afternoon at Monroe Community College.

Pal-Mac moved on top to stay by scoring three times with two out in the first inning on an RBI single by Ian Goodness and a two-run double by Christian Morrison.

Medina first baseman Zach Fike gets set to put the tag on Pal-Mac’s Isiah Stephens.

Medina had a golden opportunity to get back in the game in the top of the third inning getting the bases loaded with just one out on back-to-back singles by Hayden Woodroe and Tyler Kroening and a walk to Xander Payne. However, the Mustangs were unable to capitalize as a stikeout and a pop out quickly ended the threat.

“You’ve got to be able to score when you get the opportunity. You don’t get that many chances,” said Mustangs Coach Jon Sherman.

Pal-Mac then wasted no time in doubling the lead to 6-0 by answering right back with a three run scoring burst in the bottom of the third on four straight hits highlighted by a two-run triple by Goodness and an RBI single by Morrison.

“We just didn’t have an answer for the meat of their order,” said Sherman.

The Red Raiders tacked on a run in the fourth on an RBI single by pitcher Chris Finocchario and then closed out the run rule win with four tallies in the fifth capped off by a two-run single by Finocchario.

On the mound, Finocchario gave up only 3 hits and struck out 6.

Medina’s lone run came in the fourth inning as Aidan Paul led off with a triple and came home on a fielders choice play off the bat of Julian Woodworth.

Finocchario though quickly ended the inning with a pair of strikeouts and then retired the Mustangs in order in the top of the fifth.

Undefeated (24-0) Pal-Mac now advances to next Friday’s Class B state semifinal in Binghamton.

Medina finishes with a 21-4 record which ties a school record for most wins in a season.

A rough start to today’s second round proved costly as Medina’s Melanie Green failed to make the cut at the 77th U.S. Women’s Open Golf Tournament being played at the Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina.

Green opened the round with bogeys on the first six holes but rebounded by putting together a strong back nine paring seven of the final nine holes.

She finished the day with a 7 over par 78 and had a two day score of 12 over par 154.

The projected cut line for the final two rounds, which will be played on Saturday and Sunday, is 3 over par.

The difficulty of the Pine Needles course was evident as former champion Michelle Wie West was 5 over for the day and finished with a two day total of 147 and former three-time champion Anika Sorenstram was 9 over on the day after 12 holes.
