A quick first inning scoring burst ignited Depew to a 10-0 victory over Roy-Hart in the Section VI Class B championship state qualifier game this afternoon at Sal Maglie Stadium in Niagara Falls.

Photos by Cheryl Wertman – Roy-Hart catcher Ethan Kuzma puts the tag on Fredonia’s Charles Parker during the Rams Section VI Class B2 championship game win at Grand Island High School this afternoon.

Runners-up the last two years, Roy-Hart came away with top honors this time as the No. 6 seeded Rams defeated No. 4 Fredonia 5-1 in the Section VI Class B2 baseball championship game this afternoon at Grand Island High School.

Roy-Hart, which had lost in the B2 final to rival Medina both in 2021 and 2022, will now face B1 champion Depew for the overall Section VI Class B title and a berth in the state playoffs at 2 p.m. Monday at Sal Maglie Stadium in Niagara Falls.

“It’s been a while,” said Roy-Hart pitcher Thomas Russo who hurled a sparkling 2 hitter with 10 strikeouts. “We lost a couple of tough ones to Medina the last couple of years but this time we got it done. The extra time and extra work we put in paid off.”

“It feels great,” said Rams Coach Jim Heideman. “Tommy threw a gem and we played great defense behind him.”

Breaking away from a scoreless deadlock, Roy-Hart moved on top to stay on a clutch two out, two-run single by Zach Walker in the top of the fourth inning. Three walks loaded the bases to set up the threat.

Fredonia’s lone run came in the fifth inning on a wild pitch which cut the Roy-Hart lead to 2-1. Two walks and a single loaded the bases to set up the opportunity.

However, Roy-Hart got out of further trouble with a timely double play. Walker made a catch in right field for the second out. He then threw to Sean Mettler at second base who relayed the ball to catcher Ethan Kuzma who made the tag at home for the final out.

The Rams put a lock on the victory by scoring three times in the top of the seventh on two errors and a wild pitch to make it 5-1. Singles by Jake Gould, his second hit of the day, and Brayden Hy set up the threat.

Russo retired Fredonia in order over the final two innings to close out the win. He struck out the side in the sixth and then had his infield teammates Dawson Draper at third, Gould at shortstop and Mettler at second take turns turning ground balls into out in the bottom of the seventh to lock up the title.

Roy-Hart will now take a 19-4 record into Monday’s state qualifier against Depew which downed No. 9 Iroquois 3-1 in the B1 final.

LETCHWORTH – Ben Brundage, 16, of Kendall crosses the finish line on Sunday in the Vale of Three Falls at Letchworth State Park. He completed three courses that day – the Lower Falls 5K, Middle Falls 10K, and Upper Falls 15K.

The previous day he ran the Sehgahunda trail marathon. He covered 72-kilometers in all or 44.7 miles. He is the youngest to ever complete the Sehgahunda 72.

Two years ago he was the youngest at age 14 to finish the Sehgahunda trail marathon. He did it in 7 hours, 43 minutes as a 14-year-old.

The course is notoriously difficult, with a 3,000-foot elevation change on narrow, winding paths.

As a 15-year-old Brundage lowered his trail marathon time to 5 hours, 43 minutes.

Saturday there was a deluge of rain, and the course turned muddy. Brundage still finished in a new personal best of 5 hours, 4 minutes.

That was 34th out of 182 finishers. Not too many would then run another 30-kilometers or 18.6 miles on Sunday.

“It is very challenging but it is a lot of fun,” Brundage said today. “It’s not your average marathon.”

His father Daniel also finished the trail marathon on Saturday. His mother Sarah has conquered the course in previous years.

(Left) Ben Brundage stays focused while running a soggy course at Letchworth on Saturday during the Sehgahunda trail marathon. (Right) Ben Brundage smiles and holds a plaque on Sunday for completing the Sehgahunda 72. All of the finishers receive the “Put a Nail in Me, I’m done” plaque.

Ben is a member of Kendall’s cross country and track teams. He runs the 1,600 meter, 800 meter, 400 meter and 4-by-400 relay for Kendall. He competes at Sectionals on Saturday.

He said he enjoys long-distance running and often trains on the country roads in Kendall, Hamlin, Holley and Albion.

A junior at Kendall, he would like to run cross country in college at the Division II level.
