SUNY Brockport Athletics Department press release
SUNY Brockport Athletic Director Erick Hart announced today the hiring of Lyndonville High graduate Sam Recco as the college’s new head wrestling coach.

Recco will be responsible for all aspects of Brockport’s nationally recognized wrestling program, and he will also serve as an Area Coordinator in Brockport’s Residential Life/Learning Communities.

“We’re excited to welcome Sam Recco as the new head coach of our wrestling program,” said Hart. “He’s an accomplished college wrestler, a rising star in the profession, and he will be an excellent addition to our entire campus community. ”

Recco spent the last year as an assistant coach at his alma mater of Edinboro University (Division I wrestling) where he helped guide 141-pounder Gabe Willochell to an NCAA Championship appearance. He also led multiple student-athletes to podium finishes at the MAC Conference Championships.

“Brockport has such a storied history in wrestling and I’m honored to be the next coach in charge of making sure that that trend continues,” said Recco. “The Golden Eagle wrestlers are in good hands. I can’t wait to get started  representing the green and gold on and off the mat!”

From 2019-2021 Recco was an assistant coach for men’s and women’s wrestling at Lincoln College where he gained valuable experience in building their women’s program from the ground up. While at Lincoln, he helped coach an NAIA National qualifier and multiple conference place winners. Prior to his time at Lincoln, he was an assistant coach at General McLane High School where he mentored multiple Pennsylvania State qualifiers and podium finishers.

Recco is a 2017 graduate of Edinboro where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Athletic Coaching. Recco played a key role on some of the best wrestling teams in program history, helping the Fighting Scots to two top five team finishes at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, including a third place finish in 2015.

He was also an accomplished wrestler at Lyndonville High winning the 120 .lb New York State Championship in 2012. He placed sixth at states in 2011 and he was a two-time Section V Champion.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be taking over the Golden Eagles wrestling program. It feels like a dream come true,” said Recco. “Being back in New York State & coaching in my hometown area (Section V) means so much to my family, my friends and I.”

Recco will graduate with his master’s in business administration (MBA) from PennWest University in December.

Medina youth gridders split with Akron

Medina split 2-2 with Akron Saturday in Niagara Orleans Football Association (NOFA) competition at Vets Park.

Medina won the JV Division game 38-0 and the Varsity contest 40-0 while Akron won the Beginners 24-0 and the Minis 12-0.

Beginners
Akron 24, Medina 0
Offensively the Ponys could not sustain drives despite a few good runs by Kaydence Russaw, Zack Allen, Lyric Chinn and Cayden Dubois as penalties and negative yard plays plagued them every time they would get a drive going. On the defensive side the Ponys had a tough time with Akron’s speed and some good plays were made by Allen, Dubois, Russaw, Easton Hodgins and Shane Re.

Minis
Akron 12, Medina 0
The Colts put up a good fight defensively in this one as the second TD wasn’t given up until late on an interception return, but the usually strong running game of Damereon Shine and Luke Hungerford was stymied for most of the day. Austin Harper did hit a couple of good passes to Ja’Kier Taylor. Defensively they were strong as always lead by Shine, Hungerford, Taylor, Xander Groves, Jeremiah Baity-Medina and Patrick Grollmes.

JV
Medina 38, Akron 0
Improving to 5-0, this game was all Broncos from start to finish as they opened early with a 20 yard TD run from Kaydence Russaw and never looked back. Jude Lacy followed that up with a 25 yard TD run and a Zia Dix extra point run and Dix hit Russaw for a 2 yard TD pass, with Dix adding the extra point and making it 20-0.

Dix found Zack Graham in the second quarter for a 20 yard TD pass then Darrell Shine III scored on a 3 yard TD run to make it 32-0 at half time. In the second half Tarvarias Griffin scored on a 72 yard TD run that may have covered twice that much yardage as he reversed fields a number of times for the 38-0 final score.

Defensively the entire team was making plays, led by Shine, Liam Skowneski, Jaden Luxon, Russaw, Julian Session, Caliyah St. Louis and Jayveon Wills.

Varsity
Medina 40, Akron 0
The game opened up with a Matthew Jacobs TD run and the 2 point conversion to Preston Woodworth for an 8-0 lead. On the next possession Woodworth picked off the Akron QB and returned it for a TD and a 14-0 lead. Malik Lamar scored from 30 yards out and Hadrian Batista hit Trey Rhim for the 2 point conversion. Batista added on an interception return it for a TD and a 28-0 lead heading to half time.

Ryan Frentz scored a 60 yard TD run in the third quarter and Autumn Rizzo closed out the scoring with a 2 yard TD run for the 40-0 final score.

The defense was dominant in this game, led by Jacobs, MacKoy Hall, Will Ribbeck, Miguel Molina, Frentz and Dean Fischer. The biggest play came from Jayden Shivel who intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards to set up one of the Medina scores. Stallions move to 2-3 on the season.

Wolverines down Hawks in key 8 Man contest; Steelers post win over Silverbacks

By Mike Wertman, Sports Writer Posted 17 September 2022 at 4:29 pm

Photos by Cheryl Wertman – Holley’s Gavin Baney hauls in a long pass completion during the host Hawks loss to Bolivar-Richburg this afternoon.

Scoring in every quarter, Bolivar-Richburg posted a 34-0 victory over host Holley this afternoon in a key early season 8 Man Division football game.

Ethan Coleman scored all 5 touchdowns for Bolivar-Richburg which stays undefeated at 3-0 as Holley slips to 2-1.

A 6 yard touchdown run by Coleman and a two-point conversion carry by quarterback Caden Allen gave Bolivar-Richburg an 8-0 lead in the first quarter.

Holley did answer back with a long drive highlighted by pass completions by quarterback Destin Kuyal of 22 yards to Zach Milner and 12 yards to Vince Golisano. However, the drive stalled out on downs at the Bolivar-Richburg 13 and the Hawks did not cross the Wolverines 35 yard line again until late in the fourth quarter.

The play of the game though came on Bolivar-Richurg’s next series. The Wolverines had the ball at the Hawks 31 yard line but a high snap from center sent the ball flying backwards to midfield. Coleman alertly picked up the ball and sprinted 50 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 Wolverines lead.

The Wolverines upped the lead to 20-0 late in the third quarter on a 44 yard touchdown run by Coleman.

Coleman then tacked on touchown runs of 31 and 8 yards in the final quarter.

Holley did drive to the Wolverines 11 late in the game after a 48 yard pass completion from Kuyal to Gavin Baney but the drive stalled out on downs at the 11.

Holley defender Hunter Kennedy holds on to stop Bolivar-Richburg quarterback Caden Allen.
