Lady Hawks close G-R season with win
Closing out the regular season on a high note, Holley downed Attica 38-32 in a regular season ending Genesee Region League girls basketball game this evening.
Samantha Bates scored a game high 22 to lead Holley as Alivia Wolf added 7 and Jailyn Bishop 6.
Madalyn Robinson scored 13 and Jaclyn Torrey 11 for Attica.
Elba 67, Lyndonville 44
Sydney Reilly poured in 35 to lead Elba to a 67-44 G-R win over Lyndonville.
Addison Dillenbeck scored 15, Bella Groves 12 and Ashlee Stephens 9 for Lyndonville which trailed 35-14 at the half.
Byron-Bergen 48, Kendall 34
Olivia Senf scored 20 and Janessa Amesbury 12 to lead Byron-Bergen past visiting Kendall 48-34 in another G-R contest.
Addison Kludt scored 9, Ava LaMay 7 and Sophia Picardo 6 for Kendall.
Holley and Kendall bow in G-R road contests
Holley dropped a narrow 53-47 decision at Elba and Kendall was defeated 71-41 at Pembroke in Genesee Region League boys basketball action this evening.
Michael Long scored a game high 31 points and Angelo Penna netted 14 to lead the way for Elba.
Destin Kuyal scored 19 and Vinny Golisano 14 to pace Holley.
Kuyal scored 15 on five threes in the second quarter to help give Holley a 35-27 lead at the half.
However, Elba rallied to outscore Holley 26-12 in the second half to claim the win.
Long scored 12 in the third period to help the Lancers rally into a 40-40 tie. He then added 9 in the final stanza to help lock up the win.
Pembroke 71, Kendall 41
Tyson Totten scored 31 to spark Pembroke which led 37-15 at the half.
Jonas Rhodes scored 9, Louis Conte 8 and Austin Wakefield and Austin Werth 7 each for Kendall.
Albion swim team savors N-O title season

The Purple Eagles deadlocked for first place with Roy-Hart/Barker with identical 7-1 records. It is the Purple Eagles first N-O swim title since the 2018-19 season. Big weekend for Holley-Kendall wrestler

Contributed Photo – It was a big weekend for Holley-Kendall wrestler Hunter Jewell-Smith who earned a trip to the upcoming state championships which will be held in Albany on February 23-24. A junior, Jewell-Smith placed second at 285 lbs. to win the Section V D2 championship. Shown here in action during the sectional competition, Jewell-Smith opened the competition with three straight pins to advance to the finals where he dropped a 6-3 decision. Rebounding, he posted a quick 58 second pin in the “True Second” match to earn second place honors and gain a spot in the state championships.
230 complete Mr. Ed’s Super Bowl 5k in Middleport

MIDDLEPORT – Mason Allee-Castro of Barker is out in front at today’s Mr. Ed’s Super Bowl Warm-Up in Middleport. Allee-Castro won the race in 19:04. He is a past Niagara-Orleans champ in cross country and the long-distance events in track.
He now runs for Canisius College as a freshman. He didn’t mind the temperatures in the high 30s for the race today.
Kimberly Mills of Oakfield was the fastest female with a time of 21:27.
Runners go by a Middleport fire truck at the intersection of Townline Road and Carmen Road.
There were 230 finishers in the 35th annual 5k race. There was also a 1-mile fun run and 5k walk. Proceeds from the race go to scholarships for Roy-Hart students and alumni entering the criminal justice or medical fields, with some funds also going to other community causes.
Don Heschke continues the race tradition by firing a mini-cannon which lets out a big boom near the Erie Canal. The runners gathered on Mill Street for the start of the race. The cannon is featured on race shirts and is one of the unique parts of the Mr. Ed’s experience.
RBM hockey team wins playoff opener
Joel Harris (Barker) exploded for four goals in the Roy-Hart/Barker/Medina Club Hockey team’s playoff opening 6-3 victory over Cheektowaga Saturday.
Harris opened the scoring with a goal on passes from Jackson Hauser (Barker) and Holden Burkard (Newfane). Twenty seconds later, Hauser gave RBM a 2-0 lead with assists from Harris and John Peracciny (Roy-Hart).
In the second period, Harris scored two goals, both unassisted and one short- handed.
In the third, RBM went up by five on a score from Colby Boyer (Newfane) on assists from Jack Goehle (Newfane) and Connor Ernest (Wilson).
Cheektowaga made a run, scoring three times in five minutes before Harris scored on an empty net from Lawson Wallworth.
Devon Derda picked up the win in goal.
Round two of the playoffs begins Monday in Lockport at 8:40 p.m. with the opening game of a best of three series against ELPS (Eden, Lake Shore, Pioneer, Springville).
New football division looks for Albion, Medina
Albion and Medina will both have new look division lineups when the Section VI football season begins in early September.
Albion is shifting from the B2 Division to the B3 Division.
The Purple Eagles will be joined in the eight team B3 Division by former B2 foes Lew-Port, Maryvale and Dunkirk along with a quartet of B3 holdovers – Depew, Lackawanna, Springville and Olean.
Medina remains in the now eight team C North Division which has three new members.
The Mustangs will be joined by C North holdovers Roy-Hart/Barker, Akron, Newfane and Cleveland Hill along with three teams moving over from the B3 Division. That trio includes Alden, Tonawanda and WNY Maritime/Tapestry. Last year’s other C North team, JFK, is only fielding a JV squad this season.
Weekly High School sports schedule
Highlighting the upcoming final week of the regular season, undefeated (11-0) defending champion Newfane will visit runner-up Akron (10-1) in a key Niagara-Orleans game at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the league finale for both teams.
Akron can earn a share of the title with a victory.
Medina will also host Barker and Roy-Hart will entertain Albion in Tuesday’s other N-O boys games.

Holley-Kendall wrestlers have state qualifier
Holley-Kendall’s Hunter Jewell-Smith has qualified for the upcoming state wrestling championships by placing second at 285 lbs. in the Section V D2 Tournament held at SUNY Brockport today.
Jewell-Smith opened the competition by registering three straight pins in times of 1:42 in the pre-quarterfinals, 1:01 in the quarterfinals and 4:47 in the semifinals to advance to the title bout where he dropped a 6-3 decision to Luke Herendeen from Palmyra-Macedon.
However, he rebounded to lock up his trip to the state championships by scoring a quick 58 second pin over Elijah Bender from Dansville/Wayland-Cohocton in the “True Second” match.
Holley-Kendall also had William Kruger place fourth at 152 lbs.
Lyndonville had Ty Holmes (124) place fifth and Sebastian Temich (160) sixth.
Medina wrestler qualifies for state tourney
Medina junior Reece Senske has earned a trip to the state wrestling championships by placing second at the Section VI D2 tournament held today at Lake Shore.
Senske rebounded from a semifinal round loss to score a pair of consolation bracket victories with a technical fall and a decision win to earn third place honors. He then posted a 5-3 sudden victory win over Gavin Burchanowski from Chautauqua Lake in the “True Second” match to advance to the states. Burchanowski had been defeated in the title bout.
Medina also had junior Brody Fry (190) place third as sophomore Luke Duffina (124) and senior Sawyer Kingsbury (215) both took fourth place.
Roy-Hart/Barker’s Ronan Klug also advanced to the state championships by placing second at 160 lb.
Newfane had a pair of champions in JJ Lucinski (101) and Ayden Buttery (145) as did Wilson in Jacob Stephenson (160) and William Wottkoetter (285).
Newfane’s Aidan Gillings (138) and Wilson’s Hamza Merrick (285) both placed second to also advance to the states.
