Edward A. DeFilipps, 93, of Holley, passed away Jan. 11, 2019. He was born March 24, 1925 in Holley, a son of the late Michael and Mary (Donatelli) DeFilipps. Edward served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of Jewell Buckman Post #529, American Legion.

He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia, in 1999; and by his siblings, Louis, Sam, Doninico, Fedora Formicola, George, Michael and Edith.

Edward is survived by his sons, John (Donna) DeFilipps and Gary (Emily) DeFilipps; grandchildren, Todd, Stacy, Garrett and Samuel; sister, Louise Lusk; brother, David (Mary Ellen) DeFilipps; sister-in-law, Pat DeFilipps; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends at Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes, Inc., 16650 Route 31, Holley, on Fri., May 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. Edward’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Church, 9 S. Main St., Holley, on Sat., May 4 at 10 a.m. Interment with military honors will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Darlene Doolan

Darlene J. Doolan, 55, of Albion, died suddenly at her home April 17, 2019. Darlene was born Oct. 20, 1963, a daughter of the late Jerry and Joyce Dartt. Darlene lived in this area most of her life and at one time owned a restaurant in Carlton. She loved crafts, dancing, cooking, riding motorcycles, and animals.

She is survived by her husband, Dick; children, Ian Felker, Rory (Annie) Doolan and Daniel (Tina) Doolan; six grandchildren; brother, Steve (Anne) Dartt; sister, Marie Dartt; aunt, Charlotte Jackson; several nieces and nephews, including Adrian Bentley and Tyranny Butler; many cousins and friends; and her beloved pets, Zeppy, Ace and Flea.

The family will receive friends at Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes, Inc., 21 West Ave., Albion, on Fri., April 26 from 2 to 4 p.m., followed by her memorial service at the funeral home at 4 p.m. Interment will be private.

Robert W. Querns

Robert W. Querns, of Marblehead, Ohio and formerly of Middleport, died April 23, 2019 in The Jane Baker House on The Otterbein Marblehead Campus in Ohio. He was born June 6, 1921 in Philadelphia, Pa. to James Wesley and Bertha (Schwartz) Querns and lived in Niagara County since 1950.

Robert was a United States Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater in the Philippine Islands during the war, and then in the Army National Guard until 1975, retiring with the rank of captain. Captain Querns flew many aircraft during his career but spent most of his time overseas in a P-47 Thunderbolt. When he joined the Army National Guard in Niagara Falls, he also flew various helicopters as well as fixed-wing aircraft. He was instrumental in saving the lives of many patients following the flood of 1972 in Elmira, when he was activated to take several patients from the roof of the hospital and evacuate them to safety on the ground. Robert was very humble about his service and traits of dedications and would say that they were just part of his duty to his country. Because of his service, Captain Querns was the recipient of the Air Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the Philippine Defense Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

Bob was also an industrial arts teacher at Royalton-Hartland Central Schools for many years, imparting his wisdom, common sense and skill to hundreds of students. He retired from teaching in 1980. In addition to being a longtime member of Middleport United Methodist Church, Bob was a member of Cataract Lodge #295 F&AM, a former member of the Middleport Rotary Club, and a former member of the VFW and American Legion.

Captain Querns was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty; and by his siblings, Herbert, Paul, James, William and Richard Querns, and Josephine Koral.

He is survived by his children, Ronald (Shirley) Querns of Maryland, Wesley (Susan) Querns of Arizona, Colleen (Mike) New of Ohio, David (Guia) Querns of California, and Craig (Tammy) Querns of Olean; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Bates, Wallace & Heath Funeral Home, 38 State St., Middleport, on Mon., April 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. only. Family and friends are invited to attend Robert’s memorial service on Wed., May 1 at Middleport United Methodist Church beginning at 11 a.m. Interment with military honors will take place in Glenwood Cemetery immediately following.

Deborah Dubitsky, 71, of Medina, passed away on April 19, 2019 at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo.

She is survived by her daughter, Jilaine (Edward) Burley; granddaughter, Abigail Burley; sisters, Elizabeth Taylor, Rebecca Myers, and Theresa (Michael) Passalacqua; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Barry Dubitsky; her sister, Judith Herring; and her brother, James William Bennett.

Calling hours will be held on Fri., April 26 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Fuller Funeral Home Inc., 190 Buffalo St, Canandaigua. An 11 a.m. memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Sat., April 27, followed by burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canandaigua.

Lisa A. Bishop, 62, of Lyndonville, passed away on Tue., April 23, 2019 at The Villages of Orleans after a long illness, with her loving family at her side.

Born on Dec. 15, 1956 in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late James E. and Cora A. (Newman) Pickle.

Lisa spent most of her life growing up in Danbury, Conn., where she was a lifelong member of The Salvation Army. Recently, she worked at the Lockport Salvation Army.

Lisa is survived by her husband, Edward Bishop; children, Joseph Bishop, Adrianna (Miller) Bishop and Samantha Stearns; a grandson, Carter Miller; six siblings, James Pickle Jr., Robert Pickle, Timothy Pickle, John Pickle, Martha Dean and Darlene Jesman; and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may attend a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Fri., April 26 at the Salvation Army Worship and Service Center, 50 Cottage St., Lockport NY 14094.

Richard Toussaint

Richard L. Toussaint, 79, of Medina, passed into eternal rest on Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019.

Dick was born on Oct. 27, 1939 in Middleport, son of the late Clifford H. and Mary H. (Altman) Toussaint. He graduated from Barker High School, class of 1957. Dick was a machinist by trade and worked for E&M Enterprises in Middleport, Niagara Cutter in North Tonawanda for many years and, finally, for Jasco Tools in Rochester, retiring in 2002. He was a 4-H leader for many years with the Fruit Avenue Bombers 4-H club. He was a parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, St. Mary’s Church in Medina. Dick was also a member of the Orleans County Amateur Radio Club and the National Wild Turkey Federation and was an avid hunter. Dick will be lovingly remembered for always offering his assistance to anyone in need.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marion F. (Grabowski) Toussaint of Medina; a sister, Genevieve (late Robert) Nelson of Lockport; two daughters, Denise A. (Robert L.) Jackson of Phoenix, Ariz. and Shari L. (David) Butrite of Wilmington, N.C.; two grandchildren, Jessica L. Toussaint of Tucson, Ariz. and Zachary D. Butrite of Wilmington; godson, Robert Nelson Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Wed., April 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Daniel J. There is a time for every purpose; a time to rejoice … a time to mourn.

Ed LiPuma, of Lockport, passed away on Easter Sunday peacefully with his sons nearby, at the age of 81. He is survived by his brother, Thomas; his three sons, Richard, Robert and David; and his six grandchildren, Christopher, Joshua, Nicholas, Rachel, Rebecca and Andrew.

Ed was a 1955 graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School who earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Iona College in 1959. Ed spent his professional life in Colorado, then moved to Wilson in 2006 to live with his son, Robert, who works for Lockport City School District. He enjoyed playing tennis, coaching Joshua’s sports teams, and spending time with his friends in Wilson and Lockport.

The family will receive friends at Kenneth H. Sherrie Funeral Home, 6139 East Ave., Newfane, on Wed., April 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. only. Interment will be private.

Andrew Pecorella

Andrew Bill PeccorellaAndrew “Bill” Pecorella, 58, of Albion, passed away suddenly at his home on April 19, 2019. Bill was born Jan. 16, 1961 in Albion, a son of the late Gasper and Ruth (Hall) Pecorella.

He lived in the area all of his life and graduated in 1979 from Albion High School. He was also a former employee at Arnold Gregory Memorial Hospital. Bill was a volunteer in several organizations – C.O.V.A for 25 years, Albion Fire Department, Albion Fire Department Auxiliary Police and Orleans County Auxiliary Police. When Bill wasn’t volunteering, he enjoyed riding motorcycles, photography, fishing, fireworks, range shooting, and Halloween.

In addition to his parents, Bill was also predeceased by his sister, Mary Elizabeth.

He is survived by his wife, Tammy; children, Mary Beth (Tim) Davis, William J. Matteo and Sara Ann Pecorella; siblings, Fran Pierce, Linda (Jim) Freas, Joyce (Clarence) Winkelmann and Gasper Pecorella Jr.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Mary Ann Buckland; sisters-in-law, Kim Pecorella and Cathy Buckland; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Eugene FerrisEugene Ferris, 91, of Kent, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2019. He was born Feb. 13, 1928 in Basom to the late Paul and Grace (Snyder) Ferris.

Eugene loved to hunt, fish, and go camping in the Thousand Islands area and in Canada. He was a life member of the Carlton Fire Department and COVA.

Eugene was predeceased by his wife, Margaret “Peggy” Ferris, on Dec. 1, 2017; and by all of his siblings.

Eugene is survived by his three children, Carolyn Ferris, Robert (Kim) Ferris and Walter (Lori) Ferris; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Ferris; five grandchildren, Tasha Moyer, Tonya (Adam) Ferris, Chad (Janeen) Ferris, Brandi (James) Fisher and Jonathan DePuy; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his loving dog, Abby.

Elsie Davy

Elsie H. Davy, 95, of Kent, died April 18, 2019 in the Martin Linsin Hospice Residence. She was born March 23, 1924 in Kent to Frank and Jennie (Poelma) Henderson.

A 1941 Albion High School graduate, Elsie was an 81-year member of Gaines-Carlton Community Church (formerly East Gaines) and a life member of the OES Canal Side Eastern Star, for which she served as Matron seven times and as secretary for 28 years. Elsie worked full time at Eastman Kodak from 1942 to 1983, sold Avon for 35 years, and was a proud member of Home Bureau, Cobblestone Society, and Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Elsie was also a 55-year cancer survivor. She enjoyed actively participating in a local bowling league and Bible Study program. Reading and family celebrations were her favorite pastimes.

Else was predeceased by her husband, William K. Davy, in 1956; stepson, Ronald K. Davy, in 2009; and great-grandson, Isaiah Pettit, in 2009.

She is survived by her son, Gary (Sue) Davy of Albion; daughter, Gail (Stephen) Pettit of Albion; nine grandchildren, Lisa (Jeff) Fritz of Virginia, Chris (Cheryl) Davy of North Carolina, James (Kelly) Pettit of Indiana, Paul (Julie) Pettit of Albion, Matthew (Valerie) Pettit of Albion, Seth (Mandy) Pettit of California, Katrina (Matt) Ward of Tennessee, Jennie Davy of Virginia, and Mary Pettit of Buffalo; 19 great-grandchildren; Aunt Fern Pellet of Williamson; and close friend, Isabel Wager.

The family will receive friends on Sat., May 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Gaines-Carlton Community Church, 14585 Ridge Road, Albion NY 14411, where her memorial service will be held immediately following visitation. Private interment will be in Riverside Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Marie Brennan Anstey

Marie Anstey

Marie Brennan Anstey, 97, died on March 30, 2019 at the Balfour Senior Living facility in Denver, Colo. She was born Sept. 6, 1921 in Medina, N.Y. and lived in the area until 1987, when she and her husband, Roderick N. Anstey, moved to Venice, Fla. She moved to Denver in 2016 to be near family.

She was an avid sports fan throughout her life and was proud to have played as many sports as she could, including basketball and tennis at Medina High School until 1939, when she graduated. At 96 years old, she was disappointed with her second place finish in a Wii Bowling tournament.

In her spare time, she kept physically active by walking and playing catch and tennis. She was also an avid reader and puzzle solver.

Marie was the Medina Parts bookkeeper for 20 years until her retirement in 1981.

She was predeceased in 2009 by Dick, her husband of 67 years; and by her son-in-law, Donald Rumrill. She was the last survivor of her generation on either side of her and Dick’s families.

Marie is survived by her son, Rick (Francine) of Denver; daughter, Lynn of Apalachin, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Amy Brennan (Tim) Quinn, Jonathan (Tricia), Neil (Erica), Robert (Annie), and Jane (Ryan) Rumrill; four great-grandchildren, Brennan, Jude, Francesca Marie, and Benjamin; and dozens of nieces and nephews.

Marie was a devout Catholic all of her life. During her first two years in Denver, she lived at the Gardens at St. Elizabeth, where her best friends were retired priests, one of whom will officiate at her funeral on May 13 in the historic Christ the King Chapel at the Gardens.

The family requests that donations be made to The Gardens at St. Elizabeth in Denver, or to the donor’s favorite youth sports organization.

Ronald Carlos Rosenthal, 74, of Gasport, passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side, under the care of Niagara Hospice, on April 17, 2019. He was born Oct. 8, 1944 in Lockport to the late Carlos and Ruth (Damerow) Rosenthal.

Ron was a 1962 graduate of Royalton-Hartland High School. He owned and operated Rosenthal Livestock Farms for many years, and he enjoyed raising calves and attending farm shows. Ron really loved the family gatherings with his five children and watching his grandchildren’s activities.

Ron is survived by his loving wife, Linda (Chaffee), whom he married on Nov. 2, 1973 at First English Lutheran Church in Lockport; his children, Sara L. (Joseph “Mark”) Moore of Albion, Timothy R. (Jennifer Bonfanté) Rosenthal of East Amherst, Colleen M. Rosenthal of Gasport, Kimberly S. (Craig) Oliver of Spencerport, and Johnathan C. Rosenthal of Rush; grandchildren, Emily Rosenthal, Andrew, Zachary and Meganne Moore, William, Eleanor and Theodore Oliver; sister, Rhonda R. (Richard P.) Berner of Gasport; brother-in-law, Dudley (Ruth) Chaffee; sisters-in-law, LuAnn (Bruce) Devereaux and Susan (Robert) Buffin; niece, Jessica (Jim) Berner Heideman; nephew, Aaron (Jennifer) Berner; great-nephews, Jacob and Owen Berner, Jay and Gavin Heideman; several more nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; therapy companion, Winston; feline, Jack; dear friends, Ryan (Joanna) Farrell, Wally (Kris) Leonard, the David and Joyce Fulwell family, the Doug and Lorna Seib family, Walter “Sonny” (Judy) Librock, Bob (Bonnie) Mack, David (Carrie) Snediker and family, and many others.

Susan DeRoller

Susan T. (Preston) DeRoller, 71, of Kendall, passed away peacefully April 15, 2019 with family by her side in Wilmot Cancer Center.

Sue was born in Brockport on July 27, 1947 to Platt and Alma (Anderson) Preston and lived in this area her entire life. She was a member of Kendall United Methodist Church. She enjoyed the outdoors, reading novels, boating, and anything near the water, especially in the Thousand Islands. She thoroughly enjoyed her 27 years as an administrative assistant at Kendall Junior/Senior High School, where she touched the lives of many students and staff until her retirement in 2010. Susan truly loved spending her free time with her family to no end, especially with her three grandchildren, Emma, Ella and Tiffany.

She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Ken DeRoller; her daughter, Kelly Wilting; her son, Marc (Susan) DeRoller; her sister, Sheryl Vick; her grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dylan H. DiPilato, 31, of Holley, died suddenly April 11, 2019 at his home. He was born Dec. 4, 1987 in Rochester to Arthur and Joann (Lusk) DiPilato and lived in this area all of his life.

Dylan was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish and camp.

In addition to his parents, Dylan is survived by his siblings, Cole John-Charles, Logan Dennis, Maggie Starr (Mathew Andre), and Shane Josiah; nieces, Sophia Lamay and Mazie Starr; maternal grandfather, John Walter Lusk; many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins; and a host of friends who were like family, as well.

Frederick W. Giertz Sr., 93, of Middleport, died April 15, 2019 in the Niagara Hospice House following a lengthy illness. He was born June 15, 1925 in the Town of Royalton to Walter and Augusta (Wagner) Giertz and was a lifelong resident of this area.

Frederick was a veteran of the United States Army, a retiree of Harrison Radiator, and a member of Victory Assembly of God Church in Akron. He loved carpentry and gardening, and, as his family said, “he was a Jack of all trades and a master of none.” Frederick was a mentor in and of life for all his family and will be remembered as a man of strong faith who was steadfast in his convictions.

Mr. Giertz was predeceased by his son, Frederick Giertz Jr.; and two sisters, Helen Huth and Anna Heschke.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ida; his daughter, Betty (John) Pollow of Lockport; daughter-in-law, Jolene Giertz; grandchildren, Tammy Sears, Wendy (Craig) Bacon, and Brian (Mary) Giertz; 12 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Gladys Dunn of Ransomville, Dorothy Powers of Cherry Creek, and Esther (J.G.) Cross of Greece; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Ronald L. Mason, 66, of Holley, died April 13, 2019 at his home following a long illness. He was born Oct. 13, 1952 in Lorain, Ohio, a son of Russell and the late Catherine (Sakelios) Mason, and he lived in this area for many years.

Ron enjoyed fishing, camping, walking his dog and birdwatching. He worked at Eastman Kodak, and then at Chase Bank in Rochester as a mortgage specialist.

He is survived by his daughter, Sheila; his son, Chris; father, Russell (Joann); siblings, Russell Mason, Richard Mason, Randall Mason, Susan Carpenter, Sandra Williams, Sharon Zinzow, Roger Mason and Sheila Mason; grandchildren, Tyler and Nolan; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Beverly C. Caleb, 82, of Medina, entered into rest on Thu., April 11, 2019 at Medina Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 28, 1936 in Albion, Beverly was a daughter of the late Fredrick and Elizabeth Sandle. In 1955, she married Royce N. Caleb Sr., and together they made their home in Knowlesville. For many years, they owned and operated the Towpath Grocery store in Knowlesville. Beverly was a lifelong member of the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and was also involved with the Medina Mustang Band Boosters. An avid New York Yankees fan, she loved keeping her own score cards while watching games and had a special spot in her heart for Derek Jeter. She also enjoyed reading.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Royce Caleb Sr.; her three children, Royce “Rusty” (Lanore) Caleb Jr., Debra (Bill) Lavigne and Terry (Wendy) Caleb; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Eric) Bock, Brian Caleb, Adam (Jennifer) Lavigne, Courtney (Michael) Gilday, Allison (Chris) Reichard, Nicole (Brent) Habgood and Kristopher (Michael) Reinstadtler; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Donna (Steve) Chilson; several nieces, nephews and friends; her adorable dog, Lucy; and loving cats, Socks and Peanuts.

Family and friends are invited to a casual reception in memory of Beverly on Thu., April 18 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Ridgeway Fire Hall, 11392 Ridge Road, Medina.

Elwin “Ed” Hutchinson, of Lockport, husband of the late Bernice Hutchinson, entered into rest Wed., April 10, 2019. Ed was born in Cromwell, Iowa in 1922, son of the late Elmer and Evangeline Hutchinson.

He was a guidance counselor at Lockport Senior High School until he retired in 1982. Known as the resident singer by the staff at Brothers of Mercy Nursing Home, Ed will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a loving husband and father, a dedicated educator, and an indefatigable amateur radio operator, WB2PCN.

Ed was the beloved father of Steve and Scott Hutchinson; grandfather of Bryce, Aaron, Kay and Joshua; and brother of William Hutchinson.

The family will receive friends at Sherrie Bream Funeral Home, 4521 Main St., Gasport, on Fri., April 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. Mr. Hutchinson’s graveside service with military honors will be held Sat., April 27 at 10 a.m. at Chestnut Ridge Cemetery.

Jerry Lawton

Jerry D. Lawton passed away April 8, 2019 at North Gate Health Care Facility. Born Feb. 22, 1950 in Cuba, N.Y., he was the son of Olon and Leah (Loucks) Lawton.

Jerry worked as a truck driver for William Kugler & Brothers Inc. and, upon their closing, he worked at Barden Homes. He enjoyed music, car shows, getting lost and finding his way home. He will be remembered fondly as a great conversationalist.

Jerry was predeceased by his wife, Debra (Moran) Lawton, on June 23, 2008; and by his sister, Barbara Burkhardt.

Jerry is survived by his children, John (Andrea) Lawton, Shawn (Christian) Lawton and Tara (Jason) Draper; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends may call Tue., April 16 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., with services following at 12 p.m., at Antioch Anabaptist Church, 4649 Alabama Road, Medina.
