Winifred Miller

Winifred E. (Miles) Miller, 99, of Queensbury, N.Y. and formerly of Carlton, passed away peacefully at The Haynes House of Hope in Granville, N.Y. on April 29, 2019. She was born May 19, 1919 in Carlton to the late Henry and Alice (Platten) Miles.

Winifred had been a member of Carlton United Methodist Church since the age of 16, and she was a musician at the church as well. She was a member of Lyndonville Busy Buddies and DAR, and she was a retired New York State teacher. Winifred taught kindergarten in Lyndonville for more than 27 years. In her spare time, she enjoyed knitting, sewing, reading, quilting, playing the piano, and traveling.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Raymond, in 1986; brothers, Norman and Ward Miles; and sisters, Mabel Rhodes and Mary Johnson.

Winifred is survived by her daughters, JoAnn (Don) Siano of Fort Ann, N.Y., and Patricia (Kenneth) Smith of Albion; grandchildren, Christine, Jason C., Amanda and Jason M.; step-grandchildren, Yvonne and Michael; great-grandchildren, Braedon, Colby, Sophia, Cash, Grace and Jack; as well as several step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Fri., May 3 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes, Inc., 21 West Ave., Albion NY 14411, where her funeral service will follow at 8 p.m. Interment will take place in Mt. Albion Cemetery.

Peggy Williams

Peggy L. Williams, 53, of Medina, went to be with the Lord on Mon., April 29, 2019 at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, after a short illness.

Born on Sept. 10, 1965 in Medina, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Barbara (Carpenter) Lindemuth.

Peggy lived in Medina all her life and was employed as a waitress at the Country Club Restaurant. She enjoyed watching NASCAR, camping, and spending time with her family.

Peggy is survived by her husband of 19 years, Gary Williams; five children, Corina (Lawrence) Sword, Chad (Michelle) Oberther, Tyler (April) Lindemuth, Gary Gene (Kimberly) Lindemuth, and Dani Jo Williams, all of Medina; 10 grandchildren; three brothers, Jeff (Louanne) Lindemuth of Lyndonville, Robert (Althea) Lindemuth of Lockport, and Paul (Loni) Lindemuth of Las Vegas, Nev.; and several nieces and nephews.

Peggy is predeceased by a sister, Suezanne Vercruysse.

Robert Smith

Robert J. “R.J.” Smith, 87, of Kendall, passed away April 29, 2019 at Unity Hospital. He was born June 3, 1931 in Albion, son of the late Robert and Sarah (Wilson) Smith.

R.J. was an active member of the Kendall Fire Company. He served as Kendall Highway Superintendent for 26 years and also served as President of the State Association of Highways. He enjoyed working on his projects, spending time at The Lot, camping, and traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Smith; children, Ronald (Claudia) Smith, Steven (Kathy) Smith, Gary (Terri) Smith and Susan (Jeff) Velte; grandchildren, Laura (Jon) Neubauer, Mitchell Smith, Taryn (Sean) Martell, Ryan (Janet) Williams, Christopher (Keli) Williams, Dani Fanton and Jamie Fanton; several great-grandchildren, including the latest, Violet Marie Neubauer; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes, Inc., 21 West Ave., Albion, on Sat., May 4 from 12 to 3 p.m., followed by R.J’s memorial service at the funeral home at 3 p.m. Private interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery.

When I come to the end of the road, and the sun has set for me, remember the love that we have shared and that will comfort thee…

Stanley Neil Gillmeister, 80, of Horseheads, N.Y., passed away from this life on Sun., April 28, 2019 at Guthrie Corning Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Stan was born on July 31, 1938 in Medina to the late Charles and Lillian (Bruning) Gillmeister.

Stan married the love of his life, Janice Elaine (Moden) Gillmeister, at Wolcottsville Lutheran Church on Dec. 30, 1961. They had 57 happy years together. Stan proudly served his country with the U.S. Army. He was a lifetime member of the Owego Kiwanis Club, a lifetime member of the Nichols Volunteer Fire Department, and a Tioga County Fire Investigator. For 35 years, Stan worked at NYSEG as a manager in the Owego office. He loved to work on his computer, researching and recording his family’s genealogy. Stan enjoyed golfing, birdwatching, photography, and growing African violets, but most of all, he loved his family. He thoroughly enjoyed giving everyone a hard time in his own loving way. If you knew Stan, you knew “it was Stan’s way or the highway,” and his loved ones wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Stan will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Janice; his daughter, Judie (Doug) Scrivener of Horseheads; his son, Mark (Lisa) Gillmeister of Buffalo; his grandchildren, Alexandrea Scrivener, Shawn Scrivener, Amanda Scrivener, Christina Scrivener, Derek (Laura) Scrivener, Joshua Terry, Zachary Terry, Sara (Humberto Jr.) Perez, and Mark Gillmeister Jr.; his great-grandchildren, Elisabeth, Lillian, Jazmyne, Jamison, Joseph, Autumn, Sophia, Harlie, Gracie and Noah; his sister, Phyllis (Lynn) Mietz of Middleport; his aunts, Veronica Gillmeister of Orchard Park and Eleanor Gillmeister of Lockport; his godchildren, Eric Mietz and Kelly (Wayne Downs) Bentley; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of caring friends.

Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation on Sat., May 4 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. A celebration of his life will follow at 3 p.m. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Millville Cemetery, Medina.

James A. Johnson, 78, entered into rest on Thu., April 25, 2019 at Medina Memorial Hospital.

Born June 17, 1940 in Warsaw, N.Y., Jim was a son of the late Ezra and Helen (Rix) Johnson. He graduated from Batavia High School, class of 1958. Upon graduation, he went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps from 1958 to 1962. Jim was an electronics technician by trade who specialized in TV repair. He owned and operated The TV Doctor in Medina and was employed by Bramer Electric for many years. Jim was a certified umpire for the slowpitch softball leagues. At one time, he served as president for the U.S. Slowpitch Softball Association. He was a longtime patron of Rudy’s Diner and the Country Club Restaurant in Medina, where he made many friends and enjoyed socializing.

He is survived by his wife, Judy (May) Johnson; six children, James (Pamela) Johnson Jr., Jean (Vivon Wenner) Johnson, Jeffrey (Angela) Johnson, Jennie Johnson, Jerrod Johnson and Joy Johnson; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Donald W. Johnson.

Calling hours will be held on Tue., April 30 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina, where his funeral service will immediately follow at 5 p.m. Pastor Dean Shingleton will officiate. Burial will be in Boxwood Cemetery on Wed., May 1 at 1 p.m. Military honors will be accorded by members of Lincoln Post #1483, V.F.W. and Butts-Clark Post #204, American Legion.

Patricia PrawelPatricia M. Prawel, 70, of Gasport, died unexpectedly April 27, 2019 at her residence. She was born April 15, 1949 in Medina, the daughter of Robert and Shirley (Britt) Yaxley, and was a lifelong resident of the area.

Patricia was a faithful member of Faith Tabernacle Church in Lockport and was a volunteer with the Reflections Ministry for over 20 years. She also volunteered extensively with CareNet Pregnancy Center. In addition to enjoying shopping and gardening, she was a very devoted mother and grandmother who loved spending time with her family and helping others.

Mrs. Prawel was predeceased by a sister, Judith Bias.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Albert; five children, Kelly (Mark) DiMartile of Lockport, Stephanie (Adam) Schifferle of Middleport, Christian (Rebekkah) Prawel of Texas, David Prawel of Lockport and Jordan Prawel of Lockport; a brother, James Yaxley of Texas; a sister, Cheryl (Ed) Ayers of Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren, Nick, Jenna, Madison, Bailey, Eve, Quinn and Maxell; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Christopher Nenni, 55, of Albion, died unexpectedly at his residence on April 26, 2019. He was born Nov. 11, 1963 in Albion to Richard and Patricia (Noreck) Nenni and lived in this area his entire life.

Chris was a graduate of Kendall Central School and was employed at Penasack Sheet Metal Company in Albion. In addition to enjoying NASCAR and fishing, Chris was an avid Buffalo Bills fan.

He is survived by his mother, Patricia (John) Foote of Waterport; his father, Richard (Holli) Nenni of Albion; sisters, Cheri Bertoni of Buffalo, Tonya Zambito of Albion and Emily (Josh) Marling of Elba; brothers, Ken (Heather) Nenni of Albion, and Evan and Jack Nenni of Albion; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Teddy GrimesAmerican flagTheodore “Teddy” Grimes, 86, of Albion, died April 26, 2019 surrounded by his family at the Martin-Linsin Hospice Residence in Albion. He was born Dec. 28, 1932 in Waterport, a son of the late William and Margaret (Wooster) Grimes, and he lived in this area all of his life.

Teddy graduated from Lyndonville High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army at the end of the Korean War. Teddy worked as a mechanic with his brother, Gordy Grimes, at Grimes Atlantic in Albion. Afterwards, he went to work as a machinist at Lapp Insulator in LeRoy, from which he retired. He had a love for music and enjoyed playing the harmonica, dancing, and listening to jazz and the blues, but most of all, he loved going to all his family’s band practices and shows. He had a thirst for knowledge and was always trying to learn and keep up with current events. Teddy loved gardening and planting sunflowers, watching westerns and the Buffalo Bills, working on cars and going to steam shows. Family was most important to him, especially his grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and he could always be found at any of his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Teddy is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joanne, whom he married on Sept. 27, 1957; his children, Teresa (Rocco Caporicci) Grimes, Theodore V. Grimes, Thomas (Holly) Grimes, Todd M. (Sue Fugate) Grimes and Tracy (Joel) Gilbert; grandchildren, Mitchell, Sonya, Amanda, Marisa, Amber, Theo, Jessica, Spencer, Adam, Joel and Matthew; great-grandchildren, Amari, Carter, Gavin, Drew, Sophia, Grayson, Lexie, Weston, Owen, Todd, Bryson, Payton, Harper, Mackenzie and Claire; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Mildred (Eddy) Southcott, Gordon (Cleo) Grimes, Don (Elsie) Grimes, and Alice (Harry) Bropst; twin sisters, Jean (Frank) Marek, Joyce (Albert) Peruzzini, Dorothy (Dick) Merrill and Geraldine (Donald) Dillon.

There will be no calling hours. His Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Tue., April 30 at Holy Family Parish – St. Joseph’s Church.

Hazel LakeHazel Carpenter Lake, of Albion, departed her earthly home on April 26, 2019. She was born in Medina to Matilda and Ernest Carpenter.

Hazel celebrated her 100th birthday this last Feb. 9 and enjoyed her special day with her family, with some coming from across the country. She had the sweetest of souls, and she left a void in our lives that will never be filled. She was an avid reader who could never have enough books stockpiled to read. Hazel also loved flowers and enjoyed watching and feeding the birds.

In addition to her parents, Hazel was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, George; daughter, Peggy (Earl) Parker; sisters, Florence Yates and Elva Johnson; brother, Herbert Carpenter; son-in-law, Jack Conn; and daughters-in-law, Dorothy Lake and Susan Lake.

She is survived by her children, Phyllis Conn, Kenneth Lake, Ellen (Wayne) Kenyon, and Douglas (Ruth) Lake; 16 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Per her wishes, there will be no calling hours. Interment will be private, and a celebration of her well-lived life will take place at a later date.

James W. Whipple, 91, of Lyndonville, passed away peacefully at the Martin-Linsin Residence, Albion, on Thu., April 25, 2019.

Jim was born on July 27, 1927 in Lyndonville to Walter and Martha Whipple. A graduate of Lyndonville High School and Bryant & Stratton Business Institute, he joined his family’s business, Crosby-Whipple Oil Corp. in Lyndonville. He enlisted in the Army and served in Japan during the Korean War. After discharge from the Army, he returned to Lyndonville and married Janet Peters. Together, they had three children, James R., William and Catherine. After the unfortunate passing of Janet, Jim met and married widow Carolyn Francis of Middleport and became the loving father of her children, Robert, Kathryn, Jeffrey and Nancy. Jim and Carolyn’s daughter, Jeanne, completed their family of eight children.

Jim was a 65-year member of American Legion Post #1603, Lyndonville. He was also a longtime member of the Lyndonville Lions Club and Lyndonville United Methodist Church, and he served on the board of Yates Community Library. During his retirement, Jim was a volunteer driver for the Veteran’s Administration, assisting veterans in need of transportation to medical appointments.

Jim is survived by his children, Robert (Mary) Francis, Kathryn (Vern Stein) Francis, Jeffrey (Maureen) Francis, James (Jeanne) Whipple, William (Yvette Kemp) Whipple, Nancy (Phil Hainline) Francis, Catherine (Vic) LaBrecque and Jeanne (Scott) Goetze; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Loving father, grandfather and friend, Jim will be missed by all who knew him.

Jeanice Ann Passarell, 83, of Holley, passed away April 24, 2019. She was born Oct. 8, 1935 in Albion, a daughter of the late Andrew and Georgianna (Bartlett) Jenks. Jeanice was a former employee of Holley Central School and helped her late husband, Lewis Sr., on the family farm. She was a member of the Holley V.F.W. Post #202 Ladies Auxiliary.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lewis Sr.; 10 brothers and four sisters.

She is survived by her son, Grant (Cathleen) Passarell; daughter, Lou Ann (William) Olles; grandchildren, Jeremy (Stacey) Passarell, Jason (Tanya) Passarell, Mark (Deana) Olles and Joseph (Kristine) Olles; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley (Paul) Wilkins; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Regina “Jeanne” Goldsby, 95, of Albion, died April 24, 2019 at The Villages of Orleans. She was born June 12, 1923 in Montgomery County, Pa., a daughter of the late Arthur Kenneth and Margaret W. (Walsh) Goldsby.

Jeanne loved animals, especially watching and feeding the birds. She also enjoyed watching movies, playing cards, and crossword puzzles.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Barbara Carney and Margaret “Peg” Hamilton; and her nephews, Richard and Edward.

She is survived by her nephew, Dan Carney; and caregiver, Sara (Dennis) Stirk of Albion.

Shirley A. “Gator” Silversmith, 59, of Albion, died April 24, 2019 at her home. She was born Oct. 20, 1959 in Newfane, a daughter of Joan (Crawford) and the late Jerry Silversmith.

Shirley loved gardening and animals, especially her cats and beagle. She worked as a waitress in Florida, and then as a maintenance manager in Dallas, Texas.

In addition to her mother, Shirley is survived by her sister, Carol (Steve) Recco of Lyndonville; brothers, Michael Silversmith of Lyndonville, Terry (Cindy) Silversmith of Waterport, and Jerry (Lucy) Crawford of Canada; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Rose Edkin

Rose E. Edkin, 85, of Kent, died April 23, 2019 in Unity Hospital following a short illness. She was born Jan. 8, 1934 in Pennsylvania and lived in this area most of her life.

Rose was a former employee of GE and Black & Decker. She enjoyed gardening and shopping, but her greatest passion was taking care of her grandchildren.

Mrs. Edkin was predeceased by her husband, David R. Edkin; son, Donnie; daughter, Kath; and siblings, Billy, Bobby, Jerry and Catherine.

She is survived by her son, David W. Edkin of Rochester; her ex-daughter-in-law, Judy Edkin; brothers, Junior and Eddie Shrimp; sister, Shirley Richland; grandchildren, Sherry, Wanda, Kathy Ann, and Dorothy; as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

William “Billy” Charles Maines, 68, of Middleport, entered in to the arms of Jesus April 24, 2019 at Niagara Hospice House. Born June 2, 1951 in Lockport, Billy was the son of Clifford and Betty Maines, and he attended school in Medina. Billy was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. He retired from Fisher-Price. Billy enjoyed visiting in the Village of Middleport and was loved by all who knew him. Billy enjoyed spending his free time at the Middleport Fire Department, Mr. Ed’s, Allen’s Service Station, Darryl’s Place, Wilson Farms, and at the races.

Billy is predeceased by his father, Clifford Maines; and his sisters, Rosemary (Maines) Zahoransky and Debora (Maines) Reynolds.

Billy is survived by his mother, Betty Maines; sister, Doreen (Joe) Lobczowski; nieces and nephews, Dana (Mary Beth) Moore, Adam (Don Oades) Moore, Amanda (Brent) Amos, Adrienne (Greg) Zastrow, and Jennifer (Barry) Kreutz; as well as five great-nieces and great-nephews.

John C. Forrester, 71, died April 25, 2019 in his home while under the care of his family and Hospice of Orleans. He was born Oct. 19, 1947 in Albion and lived in this area all of his life.

John was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was a volunteer for the Orleans County Veterans Transport Service. He was extremely proud of his affiliation with AA and of the fact that he had maintained 25 years of sobriety.

Mr. Forrester was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen, in 1986.

He is survived by his daughters, Christine (Gibby Williams) Forrester of Albion, and Patricia (Robert J. Burch Jr.) Forrester of Holley; his grandchildren, Jessica, Ashlie, John, Jakob, Latasha, Trent and Alicia; great-grandchildren, Lylia, Lain, Tyshon and Brandon; his ex-wife, Debbie Forrester; and lifelong friends, Ken and Alexis Strickland and Ken Strickland Jr.

There will be no calling hours. Service and interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

Tomas Martinez

Tomas V. Martinez, 82, of Medina, entered into rest on Tue., April 23, 2019 at Highland Hospital in Rochester.

Born March 8, 1937 in Cayey, Puerto Rico, he was a son of the late Felicano Martinez and Antonia (Vasquez) Martinez. Mr. Martinez started farming at a very young age. He moved to the United States in 1951, first living in New Jersey and then making his way to Medina, where he continued his hard work in farming. He picked apples for Roberts Farm for many years and also worked at Bernzomatic, from which he eventually retired. Mr. Martinez enjoyed gardening, fishing, singing, and playing guitar. He was also a great cook and was best known for his delicious rice.

He is survived by his children, Debra (Tomas) Mercado, Carl (Bruce) Luckman, Ladena Anderson, Carol (Paul) Wisniewski-Pavlock, Kathleen (Leandor) Taylor, Lori Martinez, Michelle (Edward) Vasquez Martinez, Sophie Martinez, Tomas (Lorna) Martinez and Robert Martinez; 29 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; sisters, Adela Vazquez, Christina Vazquez and Elisa Vazquez; brothers, Francisco Vazquez, Elisel Martinez, Jesus Martinez and Carlos Vazquez; good friend, Marilyn Windnagle; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is predeceased by his son, Timothy Martinez; granddaughter, Amanda Bloom; good friend, Diane Brege Martinez; and siblings, Amelia Vazquez, Maria Vazquez, Victor Vazquez, Claudio Vazquez, Cesar Vazquez, Angel Luis Vazquez and Santiago Vazquez.

Calling hours will be held on Fri., April 26 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina, where his funeral service will be held on Sat., April 27 at 2 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Medina.

Peter Koczwara

Peter S. Koczwara, 61, of Albion, died April 24, 2019 at Buffalo General Hospital. He was born March 19, 1958 in Dunkirk, a son of the late Peter R. and Grace (Barone) Koczwara, and lived in this area for the past 15 years.

Before moving to Albion, Peter resided in the Perrysburg area. Peter attended the Arc Day Program in Elba.

He is survived by his sister, Angela (James Rick Breen) Hall of Cheektowaga; nephew, Daniel J. (Briann) Hall and their son, Morrison, of Cheektowaga; niece, Michelle A. (Scott) Parkerson and their daughter, Isabella, of Raleigh, N.C.; as well as the loving caregivers and family of the King Street IRA.

There will be no calling hours. His Mass of Christian Burial will be Fri., April 26 at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Parish in Albion. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Bonnie Eaton

Bonnie J. Eaton, 78, of Medina, entered into rest on Mon., April 22, 2019.

Born on Jan. 14, 1941 in Medina, Bonnie grew up in the Lyndonville area and graduated from Lyndonville High School in the class of 1957. She married Charles J. Eaton on Sept. 2, 1967. In her early work life, Bonnie worked for Fisher-Price Toys, S.A. Cook and Monroe Electronics. She then worked for Washington Mutual and, for the past 15 years, she was the business administrator for Calvary Tabernacle Assembly of God Church in Medina. Bonnie was very active with her church and loved her church family. She volunteered at the food pantry and children’s church, and she also served as the girls’ ministry leader. She also served on the board of directors for M.A.A.C. Bonnie was an adoring mother and grandmother who loved her family passionately. Above all else, she loved her God.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Charles J. Eaton of Medina; her four children, Donald (Tammi) Pritchard of Medina, Lisa (Paul) Miller of Oakfield, Jill Eaton of Medina, and Michael (Melissa) Eaton of Medina; eight grandchildren, Amanda Fitzwater, Jordan (Brett) Grollmes, Kelly (Zach) Pritchard, Breanna Eaton, Jacob Miller, Gavin Eaton, Olivia Eaton and Tyler Raduns; four great-grandchildren, Patrick, Savanah, Adeline and Zoey; and several nieces and nephews.

A calling hour will be held on Fri., April 26 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Calvary Tabernacle Assembly of God Church, 324 Catherine St., Medina, where her Celebration of Life Service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. A luncheon will follow. The Rev. Vincent Iorio will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, her family would greatly appreciate memorial donations to the Calvary Tabernacle Assembly of God building fund.
