Linda R. Krogh

Linda R. Krogh, 70, of Hutchinson, Minn., passed away Fri., May 10, 2019 at her home in Hutchinson.

When Linda Ruth Olsen was born in Sharon, Conn. on Aug. 8, 1948 to Odmund and Evelyn (Hale) Olsen, the world gained an exuberant, charismatic, witty and compassionate soul. Linda had a love of learning and pursued education throughout her life. She was valedictorian of her 1965 graduating class at Oakfield-Alabama Central High School. Linda went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts in anthropology, with a minor in linguistics, from the University of Minnesota, graduating magna cum laude in December 1970. After nearly a decade of enriching the lives of youth by teaching students in both remedial and gifted classes, Linda earned a master’s degree in counseling from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. She went on to become a high school counselor and spent the second half of her career as a licensed psychologist, providing mental health counseling to children, teenagers and families. Linda also utilized her vast experience and education as an adjunct professor in the psychology department at Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota.

Linda loved traveling and spending cherished time with family and friends. In addition to many trips throughout the U.S., she also had the opportunity to visit far-off places, including India, Italy, Israel, British Columbia, South Korea and Norway (to visit the birthplace of her father). As evidenced by the thousands of photos she took of family and nature, Linda enjoyed capturing memories throughout the years with her camera. She also enjoyed seeing musicals, a good bargain shopping trip, a competitive game of Scrabble, creating a beautiful home, and playtime with children. Linda appreciated the flowers of springtime in all their splendor, picnics in the summer, and a walk on a crisp fall day with leaves rustling around her feet. As winter approached, she focused all preparations on her favorite of holidays, Christmas. The Christmas season was ushered in with a trip to the tree farm in search of the perfect Christmas tree. There was only one variety that was a match, sturdy enough for all her magnificent ornaments – the blue spruce. Another of Linda’s great traditions, enjoyed by family and friends, was her Christmas open house, when she decorated her home in all the rich splendor of the holiday season and baked delectable delights.

Throughout the years, Linda lived out her devotion to Jesus by serving in his church. She was a founding member of churches in Cottage Grove, Minn. and Houghton, S.D.  Linda enjoyed visiting with her friends after church; she was often one of the last people in church on any given Sunday. Her children have memories of falling asleep as she practiced piano on Saturday night in preparation for the church service the following day. In addition to playing piano and organ for a number of churches, Linda was also an avid participant in an assortment of church and community choirs. In fact, Linda met Jon at the Crow River Singers group, and they later were married on Jan. 14, 2006.

Along with her husband, Jon, Linda is survived by three children, Rachel Waldstein, Daniel (Jessica) Waldstein and Lydia Waldstein; a stepdaughter, Christina (Daniel Pou) Krogh; a sister, Amy (Joseph) Macaluso; two brothers, Rev. Erik (Cheryl) Olsen and Arnold (Pamela) Olsen; her first husband, Sam Waldstein; four grandchildren, Luke, Chloe and Benjamin Waldstein and Wilhelmina Pou; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and friends from around the world.

Friends may attend services for Linda at 11 a.m. Sat., May 25 at East Shelby Community Bible Church, 5278 E. Shelby Road, Medina (East Shelby). Linda’s brother, Rev. Erik Olsen, will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Linda’s memory may be made to Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Hill Road S.W., Lilburn GA 30047.

Ruth Onnalee Presswood Hutchins

Ruth Hutchins

Ruth Onnalee (Brooks) Presswood Hutchins, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away Wed., April 24, 2019 at age 108.

Ruth was a missionary with the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Indonesia (formerly Netherlands East Indies) from 1940 to 1946 with her first husband, Rev. W.E. Presswood. They were interned in separate camps by the Japanese during World War II for over three-and-a-half years, Ruth at Kampili, and Ernie at ParePare on the island of Sulawesi. They both survived the concentration camps only to see Ernie die on Feb. 1, 1946, possibly from pneumonia, after two trips to the interior of Borneo to see how the Dyak believers had made it through the war. During their first trip to the interior after the war, their long canoe upset in the rapids – Ruth barely escaping death from drowning by a porter pulling her by her hair, which came out, and another porter grabbing her arm while balancing on the canoe and holding a pig in the other arm. They made it back to Tarakan, their home base at that time, but Ruth became very sick with dengue fever. Ernie went back to the Boelongan District the second time without Ruth, to meet with the indigenous leaders who were to gather at a time and place arranged during the first trip. He returned to Tarakan the day he said he would, but in a coffin. The Dutch government gave him a 21-gun salute at his funeral, which Ruth was too weak to attend. After Rev. Presswood’s death, Ruth returned to the States, where she later married James S. Hutchins, a widower with three teenage children, on Dec. 31, 1947. Her life centered around family, church, and its activities. She authored two books, “No Sacrifice Too Great” in 1993 and “Growing Up With Eight Brothers” in 2006.

She is preceded in death by her second husband, James, on March 3, 1978; and her brothers, Mahlon, Byron (Winnie, deceased), Harold (JL, deceased), Avery (Louise, deceased), Robert (Zilcie, deceased), Gerald (Jean), and Dean (Delores, deceased) Brooks; and stepchildren, Doris (Stanley, deceased) Gaska, Helen (Lee, deceased) Heisler, and Charles (Jane) Hutchins.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Martha Jean; and her husband, Larry, with whom she lived for 40 years in Columbus, allowing her to see her two grandchildren, Stephanie (Mike) Kuiken and James (Bethany) Moore, grow to adulthood and marry their spouses. She was blessed with 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. One brother survives her, Keith (Jane, deceased) Brooks, who lives in Middleport; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Albion Faith Alliance Church, 3305 Oak Orchard Road, Albion NY 14411, on Thu., May 9 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Mt. Albion Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be sent to First Alliance Church, 3750 West Henderson Road, Columbus OH 43220. Those gifts will be forwarded to the Presswood Bible Seminary in Malinau, Borneo, which is a high school-level seminary that trains students to be pastors in their own villages.
