Medina teams bow in youth football action

Medina dropped two games to Attica and one to Newfane in Niagara Orleans Football Association (NOFA) action Saturday.

Beginners
Attica 24, Medina 0

This one was closer than the score would indicate as it was 6-0 at half time and a couple of late TDs from the Blue Devils put it away. On offense there were some good runs from Zach Allen, Cayden Dubois, Kaydence Russaw and Lyric Chinn. Defensively big plays were turned in by Luke Ayrhart, Allen, Russaw, David Parsell, Shane Re and Blaze Worrells.

Minis
Attica 13, Medina 6

Attica led at half time 6-0 as the Colts defense was strong led by Damareon Shine, Xander Groves, Austin Harper, Patrick Grollmes and Zachardy Smith.

In the second half it was more of a slugfest as teams just kept making stops. Finally Luke Hungerford broke free for a 75 yard TD run for the Colts to tie the score at 6 in the 3rd quarter. Attica got the ball back and broke off a long touchdown of their own and with the extra point made it 13-6. The Colts offense worked hard, but were not able to make it back to the end zone and they fell to the undefeated Blue Devils in the end.

At 4-2, the Colts are still alive for the playoffs, but will need big wins at Albion and Oakfield/Elba to close out the season.

Varsity
Newfane 45, Medina 22

The Stallions played one of their best games of the season in what turned out to be a shootout that was closer than the final score might indicate.

Newfane opened the scoring and built a lead, but the Stallions got things going as Hadrian Batista hit Preston Woodworth for a long TD and then hit him again for the two point conversion which cut the lead to 12-8. Newfane scored again before half time to lead 19-8.

Newfane would score early in the third quarter to make it 25-8, but Batista again found Woodworth in a crowd and he took it 60 plus yards for a TD. Trey Rhim caught the 2 point conversion to cut the lead to 25-16. Newfane made it 32-16 but the Stallions continued to fight back. This time MacKoy Hall found Preston Woodworth for his third long TD of the game to cut the lead to 32-22. But with the missed two point conversion, the Stallions could get no closer as Newfane scored a couple of late TDs for the 45-22 final score. Now at 3-4 on the season the Stallions are still alive for the playoffs with a visit to Albion coming up next Saturday.

Turnovers are costly to Silverbacks in C North Division loss at Cleve Hill

By Mike Wertman, Sports Writer Posted 1 October 2022 at 5:59 pm

Photos by Cheryl Wertman – Wyatt Sherman breaks loose to score Roy-Hart/Barker/Lyndonville’s first touchdown in the Silverbacks C North Division loss at Cleve Hill this afternoon.

Three unanswered second quarter touchdowns, one on a kickoff return and two set up by fumble recoveries, keyed Cleveland Hill to a 56-14 win over visiting Roy-Hart/Barker/Lyndonville in a C North Division game this afternoon.

The visiting Silverbacks did grab an 8-6 lead to open the second quarter on a 16 yard touchdown run and two-point conversion carry by Wyatt Sherman. Aiden Mescall had runs of 13 and 12 yards and Sherman a pickup of 14 to highlight the drive.

However, it took Cleve Hill only seconds to regain the lead for good at 14-8 as Amarion Spivey returned the ensuing kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown and Carter Masianka added the two-point conversion.

Two turnovers in RBL territory then proved very costly to the Silverbacks later in the quarter as Cleve Hill turned both into touchdowns. The first came on a 33 yard touchdown pass from Masianka to Doug Hunt and the second on an 11 yard TD run by Larry Burgin giving the Golden Eagles commanding 28-8 lead at the half.

Cleve Hill later turned two more fumble recoveries into touchdowns in the final quarter, first on a 4 yard run by Burgin and then on a 51 yard run with the recovered fumble by Tristan Pratt upping the Golden Eagles lead to 48-14.

The Silverbacks other touchdown came on a 51 yard pass from quarterback Trenton Muck to Braxton Crosby late in the third quarter.

The win pulls Cleve Hill into a tie with Akron for second place in the C North standings at 2-1 while RBL slips to 1-2 in the division.

Braxton Crosby heads to the endzone to score the Silverbacks second TD after making a juggling catch.
