Roy-Hart tops Albion in N-O volleyball

Roy-Hart scored a straight set 25-14, 25-15, 25-16 win over host Albion in a Niagara-Orleans League volleyball match this evening.

Raegan Kern had 6 kills and Lila Brigham and Grace Pearl 3 each for Roy-Hart. Lauren Snyder added 10 aces and Ryleigh Capen 4 aces and 12 assists for the 2-0 Lady Rams.

Madison LeBaron had 22 digs, Julia Knight 3 blocks, Taylor LeFrois 3 kills and 2 blocks and Hannah Kumalac 3 aces and 6 assists. for Albion which is 0-2.

Akron 25-25-25, Medina 23-12-17
Akron bested visiting Medina in three sets 25-23, 25-12, 25-17.

Addy Paul had 3 aces for Medina and Maya Anderson and Maddy Watts both had 1. Josephine Pollock added 2 kills as Anderson, Sam Heschke and Karlee Cau each had 1.

Albion golfers get second N-O win

Albion gained a forfeit win over Wilson in a Niagara-Orleans League golf match this afternoon.

Drew Pritchard led Albion with a 47 while Ben Meyers took medalist honors for Wilson with a 40.

The Purple Eagles improve to 2-3.

In the N-O Novice Tournament Albion’s Luke Bedford took first place honors.

Late goals lift Attica past Lyndonville

A pair of late goals earned Attica a 2-0 win over host Lyndonville in a Genesee Region League boys soccer game this afternoon.

Carter Gorski scored what proved to be the game winner for the Blue Devils with 11 minutes remaining and Elijah Crandall added an insurance tally four minutes later.

Lyndonville, which is now 2-2, had shots rattle off the cross bar in both the first and second halves.

Lyndonville’s Amir Zimmerman has control of the ball ahead of Attica’s Victor Santos Rios.

Mustangs to host Panthers in key early season C North Division contest Friday

Defending champion Medina will open the home portion of the schedule by hosting Newfane in a key C North Division contest at 7 p.m. Friday at Vets Park.

Last fall the two teams both brought 5-0 records into a decisive late season division showdown at Newfane  which saw the Mustangs emerge with a 48-26 victory to lock up a fourth straight C North title.

Both teams opened the season with wins last weekend. The Mustangs scored a rain soaked 56-7 win over Roy-Hart/Barker in the inaugural game on Barker’s new artificial turf field while Newfane downed rival Wilson 24-13.

Running back Christian Moss scored 4 touchdowns, 3 rushing one 1 receiving, quarterback Preston Woodworth passed for a pair of touchdowns and Cole Callard was a perfect 8 for 8 in extra point kicks to lead the Mustangs offense.

Quarterback Mac Capen ran for one touchdown and passed to Ayden Buttery for another to spark the Panthers offense.

This will mark the 60th meeting in the series which began in 1954. The Mustangs hold a 47-10-2 lead over the Panthers in the series including winning the last four in a row.

The other C North games this weekend will have Roy-Hart/Barker at Akron at 7 p.m. Friday and Tonawanda at Cleveland Hill at 2 p.m. Saturday. Alden will host Wilson and Maritime will face Franklinville/Ellicottville in interdivisional contests.

R-H grads continue college soccer careers

Two Roy-Hart graduates, Grace Parker and Peter Martillotta, are now beginning their sophomore year of collegiate soccer competition.

Parker is a midfielder/defender at Gannon University where she is majoring in Psychology.

Martillotta is a forward at Russell Sage College where he is majoring in Physical Education.

Both student/athletes had strong freshman years academically.

Parker was named a Pennsylvania Conference Scholar Athlete.

Martillotta made Deans List both semesters and was named to the Empire 8 Conference President’s List.

Kendall outlasts rival Holley in G-R volleyball

Attica downs Lady Tigers; Lady Eagles romp

A lightning quick goal in the opening minute sparked Attica to a 4-3 win over Lyndonville/Barker in a Genesee Region League girls soccer game this afternoon at Lyndonville.

Braelynn Dillenbeck scored a goal in the first half and Alexa Robinson had a pair of goals in the second half for the Lady Tigers which trailed 3-1 at the half.

Kendall 9, Alexander 0

Kendall romped to a 9-0 G-R win over Alexander as Ava Quintern scored 5 goals, Izzy D’Agostino 2 and Olivia Sawyer and Leann Clay 1 each.

D’Agostino also had 3 assists and Sophia Picardo 2.

Holley 3, Bloomfield 0

Holley blanked host Bloomfield 3-0 in a non league game as Alivia Wolf, Mia Thom and Hanna Ostrom each scored a goal.

Wolf, Brynn Thomas and Jayna Burris each had an assist.

Jayda Shampine made 5 saves to earn the shutout in goal.

Akron posts key N-O golf win over Roy-Hart

Taking over sole possession of first place, Akron scored a 230-240 win over Roy-Hart in a key Niagara-Orleans League golf match this afternoon.

Brodie Hill took medalist honors with a 39 for Akron which improves to 5-0. Cam Wild added a 42, Thunder Hallett 46 and Aiden Romesser 47 for the Tigers.

Tyler Rothwell shot 42, Gavin Heideman 47 and Isaac Smith 49 for Roy-Hart which slips to 3-1.

Barker evened its record at 2-2 with a 260-277 win over Albion which is now 1-3. Nate Popovich earned medalist honors for Barker with a 42.

In the other match, Medina won by forfeit over Newfane to improve to 3-2.

Cam Fike earned medalist honors with a 43 for Medina as Ryleigh Culver shot 45 and Tyler Allen 47.

Special ceremony is set for Albion’s home opening football game on Friday

Friday’s Albion home opening football game against Depew will be a special one for the Purple Eagles sports program.

Over the past two years Albion’s sports facilities have undergone a dramatic up grade.

Those improvements include a new artificial turf football field surrounded by a new all weather track and a new artificial turf combination soccer/softball field. In addition, the high school gymnasium is being completely redone and the tennis courts have been rebuilt.

Richard Diminuco

Prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff there will be a special dedication ceremony as those new turf facilities will be named the Richard C. Diminuco Athletic Complex in honor of the Purple Eagles former long time football coach and athletic director.

Those ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 6:45 p.m.

Diminuco served as Albion’s varsity coach for 30 years from 1979 to 2008 during which time he led the Purple Eagles to 12 division titles, 4 Section VI titles and over 200 victories. He also served as Athletic Director for much of that time.

On the field, Albion will be looking to rebound from a 32-7 season opening loss at Olean while Depew will be looking to keep the momentum from a 43-14 win over Dunkirk.

Orleans trio on GCC soccer team

This season’s Genesee Community College women’s soccer team includes a trio of Orleans County players.

That threesome includes Albion High graduates Catherine Wolck and Kayla Burgio and Holley grad Isabella Thom.

Wolck is a sophomore midfielder, Burgio a freshman midfielder and Thom a freshman defender.
