Bees down Tigers; Eagles top Lancers

Byron-Bergen downed host Lyndonville 12-3 and Kendall bested host Elba 11-2 in Genesee Region League baseball action this afternoon.

Byron-Bergen took the lead for good against Lyndonville by scoring two quick runs in the first inning on a single by Dylan Utter and a double by Gavin Kinkelaar.

The Bees added two runs in the fourth on a single by Michael Holley and two more in the fifth on a passed ball and a fielders choice play before erupting for six runs in the sixth to lock up the win. An RBI double by Bryson Snell and an RBI single by Martin McConnell highlighted that uprising.

Lyndonville scored once in the first on a triple by Cole Moyle, once in the fourth on doubles by Jacob Pitcher and Thomas Blake and once in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Moyle.

Byron-Bergen is now 3-5 and Lyndonville 0-8.

Kendall 11, Elba 2
Scoring in six different innings, Kendall improved to 10-1 with the win at Elba which slips to 6-2.

Jonny Conte had 4 hits and Vinnie D’Agostino and Colby Hughes 3 each and Gavin Braun 2.

Kendall scored twice in four of the first five innings to build up an 8-2 lead.

The Eagles scored in the first inning on a triple by Vinnie D’Agostino and a single by Hughes, in the third on a groundout and an error, in the fourth on a double by Vinnie D’Agostino and a single by Hughes and in the fifth on RBI singles by Conte and CJ D’Agostino.

Kendall tacked on one run in the sixth on an error and two in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by CJ D’Agostino and and RBI double by Vinnie D’Agostino.

Tigers Hall of Fame will induct three

Lyndonville High will be inducting three new members into the Tigers Athletic Hall of Fame in ceremonies on May 25 at the White Birch Golf Course at 2 p.m.

The new inductees include Jeffrey Smythe (Class of 1957), Kelly Dix (Class of 1982) and Julie (James) Donald (Class of 1985).

Smythe, a three sport athlete including a role as the starting quarterback for Lyndonville’s first 11 man football team in 1955 and as a guard on the basketball team. A standout in baseball, Smythe’s teams made the Section V Class C finals in both 1954 and 1955, earning the Class C title in 1955. Boasting a 51-11 career record on the mound, he also added a no-hitter in 1957.

After graduating from Lyndonville, Smythe followed in the footsteps of his coach and mentor Arnie Hartsen and pursued a career in Physical Education. He began his teaching and coaching career at Watkins Glen in 1967 before serving as Athletic Director at Shaker High School and finally Mexico Academy (NY) where he retired in 1995.

Dix excelled in soccer, basketball and track and field earning Team MVP and league all-star honors in each. She helped lead her soccer team to the Section V Class D finals in 1979 and a GR Division II league title in 1981. In track and field, Kelly won Sectionals in the 800 and 1500m in 1981 and 1982.

Kelly still holds school records in the 1500 (4:54.1) and the 800m (2:28.5). Excelling academically as well, Kelly was Valedictorian of the Class of 1982.

A three sport athlete, Donald excelled on the diamond as a pitcher and hitter. She earned G-R Honorable Mention status in the 1983 season hitting .384 and pitching 100 innings. In the 1984 season, she hit .377 and pitched 94 innings earning her G-R league All-Star honors.

In her senior season, she .386 including 14 singles, 3 doubles, 2 triples and 2 home runs and struck out 47 batters on the rubber, again earning G-R All-Star honors. She was also the LCS Coaches Award recipient in the 1985 school year.

Huge inning sparks Lady Eagles to win

A marathon 12 run third inning powered Kendall to a 16-1 victory over Byron-Bergen in a Genesee Region League softball game this afternoon.

A three-run home run by Brooke Rodas and a two-run homer by Ella Christ highlighted the Lady Eagles huge inning which also included an RBI double by Maggie Zastrow and two-run singles by Christ, Lia Larson and Sophia Picardo.

Rodas, Christ and Izzy D’Agostino each finished with a pair of hits.

Purple Eagles edge Lakemen in 9 innings

Albion pushed across a run on an error in the bottom of the ninth inning to nip visiting Wilson 4-3 this afternoon as the Purple Eagles remain undefeated at 5-0 in Niagara-Orleans League baseball competition.

Albion jumped out to an early 3-1 lead by scoring three times in the second inning on a two-run single by Nate Gibson and an RBI single by Elliott Trapiss.

However, Wilson rallied to knot the score at 3-3 by tallying once in the fifth on a bases loaded walk and once in the seventh on a single by Braden Seeley.

Gibson pitched the first six innings allowing 3 hits and striking out 10. Seth Krenning hurled the final 3 frames giving up 2 hits and fanning 3.

The loss drops Wilson to 1-7.

Roy-Hart 8, Akron 7
Roy-Hart (2-4) edged Akron (5-3) 8-7 in a rained shortened game played at Barker.

Three runs in the top of the sixth, which gave Roy-Hart an 8-4 lead, provided the margin of victory for the Rams. An RBI double by Gavin Heideman and an RBI sacrifice fly by RJ Townsend highlighted that rally.

The Rams also scored three times in the first inning on a double by Townsend and a two-run double by Jared Hy.

Lakewomen edge past Albion in 8 innings

Wilson scored twice in the eighth inning on an error to edge host Albion 6-4 in a key Niagara-Orleans League softball game.

Wilson improves to 7-2 and pulls to within a half game of league leading Roy-Hart (7-1) while Albion slips to 5-4.

Albion tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh on a home run by Kenzi Snook who also banged out two triples on the afternoon.

Earlier, Albion grabbed a 3-2 lead as Snook tripled and came home on a sacrifice fly by Cami London.

London also had an RBI single in the first inning as an error plated the Purple Eagles tally in the fourth frame.

Lux Froman also had 3 hits for Albion as London and Taylor LeFrois both had  2.

Newfane 12, Medina 0
Newfane sored 5 quick runs in the first inning on a three-run home run by Kimberly Schmitt and a two-run homer by Marlee Seefeldt to key the 12-0 win over visiting Medina.

In the circle, Rylee Smith hurled a 2 hitter with 3 strikeouts for the Lady Panthers.

Newfane is now 3-7 and Medina 0-7.

The Roy-Hart at Akron game was postponed.

Kendall ‘9’ scores win over Northstar

Improving to 9-1, Kendall downed Northstar 10-2 in a non league baseball game this afternoon.

Colby Hughes had 4 hits to lead the Kendall offense as Jonny Conte and CJ D’Agostino both had 2.

Nic Cole picked up the win on the mound allowing 3 hits and striking out 10.

The Eagles scored in five different innings picking up two in the first on a wild pitch and a single by Hughes, two in the second on a single by D’Agostino, one in the third on a sacrifice bunt by Gio Rodriguez, two in the fifth on a single by Cole and three in the sixth on singles by Hughes and Sammy Conte and a wild pitch.

Albion, Medina, Roy-Hart score tennis wins

Albion, Medina and Roy-Hart all scored victories in Niagara-Orleans League tennis competition this afternoon.

Albion improved to 5-1 with a 3-2 win over Wilson (4-2) as Leo Bolton and Landon Graybill both scored singles wins and the duo of Kenadie Patten – Hanna Kumalac posted a doubles victory.

Wilson got wins from the doubles teams of Shelby Robinson – Tessa Gunther and Zoey Beck – Grace Smith.

Medina (2-5) likewise edged Newfane (0-7) 3-2 as River Jones and Logan Trillizio posted singles wins and the team of Levon Fuller – Eli Biesinger scored a doubled victory.

Newfane got doubles win from the duos of Dylan Lamont – Sara Klinger and Thea Ostrozinski – Kiara McAllister.

Roy-Hart (3-2) trimmed Akron (4-3) on a singles win by Colin Cousins and doubles victories by the duos of Ella Martillotta – Emily Livergood and Reagan Kern – Maria Tombley.

Albion and Wilson split
Albion and Wilson completed their N-O track meet at Wilson which was suspended this past Thursday due to stormy weather.

With only a handful of events to finish today Albion captured the boys’ meet 71-65 while Wilson won the girls’ competition 91 1/2 – 49 1/2.

The Albion boys are now 3-0 and Wilson 1-1. The Wilson girls are 2-0 and Albion 0-2-1.

Unbeaten Mustangs roll past Panthers

Photo by Cheryl Wertman – Aidan Papaj had a grand slam home run, a triple and single to help lead Medina past host Newfane this afternoon.

Scoring in every inning, front running Medina rolled to a 14-0 victory over host Newfane this afternoon as the Mustangs improve to 6-0 in Niagara-Orleans League baseball competition and 11-0 overall.

Aidan Papaj provided the strong firepower for the Medina attack as he belted a grand slam home run in the second inning, an RBI triple in the fourth frame and an RBI single in the fifth.

A walk, a single by Vinny Gray and a hit batter loaded the bases to set the stage for Papaj’s grand slam.

The Mustangs scored a total of four runs in the fifth frame as Brody Fry had an RBI double, Tyler Kroening an RBI single and Vinny Gray a run producing sacrifice fly.

Hadrian Batista had an RBI sacrifice fly in the third inning for the Mustangs which also picked up three quick runs in the first inning without the benefit of a hit.

Lukas Grimes and Fry shared the pitching during for Medina in the run rule five inning contest.

Grimes hurled the first three innings allowing 2 hits and striking out 5. Fry pitched the final two frames giving up no hits and fanning 5.

Medina will next face rival Albion in a key home-and-home series later this week.

Medina will visit Albion on Thursday. The Mustangs will then host the Purple Eagles on Friday with both games at 4:45 p.m.

Holley senior to run track at Cobleskill

Contributed Photo – Holley High School senior Allison Merle has signed a letter of intent to continue her education and her track and field career SUNY Cobleskill where she will study Animal Science. She is shown her at the signing with her parents Nathan and Kristin Merle and her brother Mason. Allison has been a member of Holley’s track and field program for the past five years where she runs in the 100 and 400-meter hurdle events. She is a team captain, a two-time Scholar Athlete award recipient (2022, 2023), a two-time Genesee Region All-Star (2023, 2024) and Holley’s Class of 2025 Valedictorian. She captured the Genesee Region title in 2024 and holds the school record for the 100-meter hurdles with a 16.92 time. She has competed at state qualifiers for the 100-meter hurdles for three consecutive years.

Medina Mustangs FC wins Division 1 opener

The Medina Mustangs FC opened the Buffalo District Soccer League Division 1 season by downing the Celtic Brigade 4-2 at Kenmore West this afternoon to avenge a loss in last year’s playoffs.

Nathan Dillenbeck scored 3 goals and David Gonzalez 1 to lead the Medina attack as Ethan Leonard and Greg Husung both had a pair of assists.

The game was the Division 1 debut for the Medina which was promoted after winning the Division 2 regular season title last year.

The Mustangs next face the Southern Tier FC at SUNY Fredonia next Sunday at 4 p.m.

Green has top 10 finish at Las Vegas Tourney

Putting together a sparkling final round today, Medina’s Melanie Green  tied for 8th place at the Epson Tour’s Reliance Matric Championship at Las Vegas.

Green fired a 4 under par round of 68 today to finish the four-day, 72 hole tournament with an 8 under par total of 280.

She had 6 birdies and one double bogey on the day.

She got off to a fast start notching birdies on two of the first three holes and had a strong finish with birdies on her final two holes.

Green opened the tourney with a 2 under par round of 70 on Thursday. She matched that score on Friday for a 4 under par total of 140.

Now in her first full season on he Epson Tourney, she had 4 birdies and 3 bogeys on each of the first two rounds.

She then had an even par round of 72 on Saturday to stay at 4 under heading into today’s final round.

Green next will compete in the Epson Tour’s Carlisle Arizona Women’s Golf Classic this coming week at Scottdale, Arizona.

Rival Mustangs and Purple Eagles will face key N-O diamond series this week

Photo by Cheryl Wertman – Albion’s Drew Pritchard and his Purple Eagles teammates will face rival Medina in a pair of key league games this coming week.

Currently 1-2 in the Niagara-Orleans League baseball title race standings, defending champion Medina and rival Albion will meet in a key home-and-home series this coming week.

Medina will visit Albion at 4:45 p.m. Thursday and the Mustangs will host the Purple Eagles at 4:45 p.m. Friday.

The Mustangs are currently 5-0 in N-O action and the Purple Eagles 4-0.

However, before those rivalry matchups, Medina will visit Newfane (2-4) and Albion will host Wilson (1-6) on Monday at 4:45 p.m.

N-O softball title race
The four way N-O softball title race also has several key games on tap for this week.

Roy-Hart at 7-1 currently holds a game lead over defending champion Barker and Wilson, both at 6-2, with Albion two games off the pace at 5-3.

The key games will have Albion hosting Wilson on Monday, Barker visiting Wilson on Wednesday and Albion entertaining Roy-Hart on Friday, all at 4:45 p.m.

Lady Tigers have busy week
Off to a strong 7-1 start, the Lyndonville Lady Tigers softball squad faces a busy four game week.

Currently seeded No. 1 in the Section V Class D standings, Lyndonville will visit Byron-Bergen on Tuesday, host Notre Dame on Wednesday and Oakfield-Alabama on Thursday and visit Kendall on Friday all at 5 p.m. Oakfield-Alabama is currently seeded No. 2 and Kendall No. 5 for the Class C2 sectionals and Notre Dame No. 6 in Class D.

Notre Dame trims Barker in softball

Jumping out to an early 5-0 lead, Notre Dame went on to edge host Barker 6-4 in a non league softball game this afteroon.

Notre Dame scored three quick runs in the first inning on a triple by Olivia Gillard and two in the third as Anna Panepento had an RBI single.

Barker answered back with three runs in the home half of the third on a two-run single by Madelina Pavlock and a sacrifice fly by Peyton Bradley and one in the sixth on a single by Elise Monaco but could not pull even.

Gillard and Panepento both had 2 hits on the day for Notre Dame.

Pavlock and Bradley both had 3 hits for Barker as Monaco and Lexi Brazzell both had 2.

Notre Dame is now 5-2 and Barker 8-5.

Green advances at Epson Las Vegas tourney

Rebounding strongly after missing the cut last week, Medina’s Melanie Green has fired back-to-back sub par rounds to make the cut the the Epson Tour’s Reliance Matric championship at Las Vegas.

Green opened the tourney with a 2 under par round of 70 on Thursday.

She matched that score on Friday for a 4 under par total score of 140 which is 4 shots back of the leader.

Now in her first full season on he Epson Tour, she had 4 birdies and 3 bogeys on each of the first two rounds.

The tourney will conclude with rounds today and Sunday.

She is scheduled to tee off for the third round at 12:50 p.m. our time.

The Epson Tour is the official qualifying tour of the LPGA.

Gowanda tops Medina in D Division lacrosse

Building up a 14-1 halftime advantage, Gowanda went on to down Medina 16-1 in a Class D Division lacrosse game at Vets Park this evening to improve to 8-2.

Cole Callard scored the Mustangs lone goal.

Newfane sweeps Medina
Improving to 2-0, Newfane swept to a doubleheader victory over host Medina in a Niagara-Orleans League track meet this afternoon.

The Panthers won the boys’ meet 94-46 and the girls’ competition 102-39

The Newfane boys got individual event double win efforts from the foursome of Brandon Aldridge (100, Long Jump), Khalil Golden (Shotput, Discus), Nasir Spencer (200, 400) and Liam Betteridge (800, 1600).

The Newfane girls also had a quartet of double winners in Stephanie Chunco (100, 400), Jayde Jerge (800, Triple Jump), Eden Hillman (3000, Pole Vault) and Sam Broecker (Shotput, Discus).

Akron 4, Medina 1
Akron improved to 4-2 in Niagara-Orleans League tennis competition with a 4-1 win over Medina (1-5).

Whitley Koopman won at first singles for Akron which also swept the three doubles matches with wins by the duos of Lia LaFromboise – Hayden Wight, Alex Parisi – Eliza Koopman and Shelby Ceratt – Eva Sage.

Logan Trillizio won at second singles for Medina.
