MEDINA –  After a short illness and tenacious fight, Bill left us peacefully with his wife and daughters by his side on May 24, 2021.

Bill was a gentle giant, a man of few words.  But he left a lasting impact on everyone he met, always leading by example.  Bill loved the Buffalo Bills and the Syracuse Orange and working alongside his team at the Sheriff’s Department, but his family was everything to him.

Bill was born on June 17, 1956 in Albion to William and Elsie Oliver.  He grew up in Albion, graduating with the class of 1974. Bill married the love of his life Michelle in 1981, and together raised two daughters in Medina.  Bill worked at Liptons and as a police officer in the Village of Albion, but is most remembered for his 33-year career as a dispatcher with the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department where he retired in January 2020.  His calm, steady, compassionate, and professional demeanor impacted so many.  Bill overcame may health struggles in his life, but never complained or asked “why me?”

Bill is predeceased by his parents: Bill and Elsie Oliver and his father-in-law, Art Lucas.  He is survived by his true love Michelle; his daughters: Alissa (Rich Mitchell) Bruce, Lyndsey (Travis) Oliver-Farewell; his bonus daughter Celeste (Michael) Cline; grandchildren: Elaina and Sydney Bruce and Kendall and Parker Oliver-Farewell; his mother-in-law, Dee Lucas; sister-in-law, Joette (Herb) Oberther; brother-in-law, James (Lisa) LaRock; brother, Robert (Stephanie) Oliver; several cousins that he cherished as siblings; many precious nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and dear friends.

Arthur Gordon Michael McFarlane, 86, of Hamlin passed on Fri., May 21, 2021 at home.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carol Keady McFarlane; children: Jeanne Brightly, Douglas (Catherine) McFarlane, Stuart (Laura) McFarlane and Robert McFarlane; grandchildren: Christopher (Marisa) McFarlane, Joseph (Heather) Brightly, Lindsay (Zachary) Hahn, Margaret “Meg” (Matthew) Perley, Gregory( Emily) McFarlane, Paul (Celia) Brightly and Sean (Kaitlyn) McFarlane; great-grandchildren: Liam Arthur McFarlane, Wyatt Patrick McFarlane, Samuel Richard Hahn, Connor Merrill McFarlane, Elaina Joy Hahn, Marlene Rose McFarlane, Myra Jean Brightly, Ada Grace Brightly, Jacob Maxwell Hahn, Davis Stuart McFarlane, Elijah Mathias Perley; sisters-in-law: Catherine “Kit” Pollicove, Peggy Rickman and Margaret Corbin. Arthur was predeceased by his siblings: John, Ellen and Patrick; and granddaughter, Leah McFarlane.

Art was a machine builder by trade and an inventor at heart. Upon “retirement” from GM, he owned and operated Hamlin Sawmill, utilizing equipment he built and technology he devised.

Kenneth R. Clark age 64 of Gasport, NY passed away in his home surrounded by his family on May 23, 2021. Ken was born in Medina on May 9, 1957 to the late Herman and Elaine (Arnold) Clark.  

Ken was a 1976 Barker graduate. After graduating he worked at General Motors for 30 years. Upon retirement Ken enjoyed the great outdoors with hobbies like hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and grandchildren and friends.

 Ken is survived by his wife Jill Clark of 42 years; daughter, Samantha Clark Wilson and husband, Mark and their children: Kolt and Clark Wilson; brother, Daniel (Sharon) Clark; sister-in-law, Lisa Clark; special niece, Dr. Amy Stratton Kitts and other nieces and nephews. Ken was predeceased by his brother, Charles.

Lillian Ann Harden-Bell, 76, of Hinesville, Ga., went to be with the Lord on May 22, 2021. She was born Jan. 2, 1945 in Hinesville, GA to the late LeRoy and Bernice Miller.

Lillian enjoyed birdwatching, shopping, and tending to her flowers and garden. She appreciated nature and animals of all shapes and sizes.

In addition to her parents, Lillian was predeceased by her 1st husband, Roger Harden Sr.; 2nd husband, Robert Bell; and all of her siblings. Lillian is survived by her son Roger (Bernadine) Harden; grandsons: Jensen, Trevor (Cassie), and great-grandson, Kinglsey Harden.

Services for Lillian will be held privately and at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Boxwood Cemetery, Medina, NY.

MEDINA – Douglas E. Rue, 82, of Medina, NY, entered into rest peacefully at home on Sunday, January 10, 2021.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Mary Lou Rue; two sisters, Sharon (Craig) Rue Lewis and Barbara (Dick) Loeffler, all of Minnesota; his children, Jacquelyn (John) Lundgard, Jonathan (Christine) Rue and his beloved “Rue Crew”: Wende Nicosia, Jill (Paul) Andrews, Scott (Jan) Schickling, Kim (Mario Rojas) Kujawa, Leslie (Ted) Brelsford, Karen Huntington and Bruce (Debbie) Huntington.

There are no calling hours. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 28, at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1355 West Ave, Medina, NY 14103. Burial will be private for the family at the Western New York National Cemetery, Corfu, NY.

Edna A. Moore, 69, of Albion died May 18, 2021 at her sister’s home in Warsaw following a long illness.

She was born Sept. 4, 1951 in Sonyea, NY and had lived in this area most of her life.  Edna enjoyed crocheting, knitting , sewing and travelling; as well as playing various outdoor activities such as horseshoes and cornhole at family reunions.  Ms. Moore was predeceased by her brothers: Raymond and Lester Dieter, and her grandson, Dylan Starkweather.

She is survived by her sons: Joseph Moore of Albion, John Moore of Texas; her daughters: Mary (Mike) Lorek of Hamlin, Tammy Moore of Albion; brothers: Paul (Joan) Dieter of NH, Carl Dieter Jr. of Portageville; sisters: Ruth Wright of Warsaw, Barbara (John DiSalvo) Dieter of Warsaw; grandchildren: Brandon, Brittney, Dallas, Brittany, Jordan; great-grandchildren: Charlotte and Joseph, her former husband John “Bud” Moore; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Joseph H. Krebs, “Joe the Janitor”, 78, of Medina entered into rest on Mon., May 17, 2021 at the Medina Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 4, 1942 in Medina, he was a son of the late Edwin H. and Nelva (Kidd) Krebs. Joe was a graduate of Medina High School where he was a member of the FFA. He grew up on his family farm. After the passing of his parents, he continued crop farming with his brother. Joe worked as a custodian for the Medina Central School District, first at the Towne Elementary School, and upon its closing, moved to Medina High School, where he retired from after many years.

Beside his parents, Joe was predeceased by three siblings, Ronald Holt, Martin Krebs and Jeanne Buelke.

Survivors include sisters-in-law, Joanne Holt and Rita Krebs; brother-in-law, Bruce Buelke; nephews, Jeffrey (Connie) Holt, David (Joyce) Holt and Michael (Cheryl) Holt; nieces, Alyssa (Mir) Nugmanov and Jessica (Josh) Jeffries; and several aunts, uncles, great-nieces and nephews.

CLARENDON –With his larger-than-life personality and boisterous laugh, Danny “Dan” “Papa” Moore passed peacefully on May 15, 2021 after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born December 5, 1956 in Brockport to the late Lewis and Arlene (VanOrden) Moore.

Danny was immersed in the community and neighborhood of each place he lived. Selfless and strong, the world could rely on Dan for every need no matter how small and would work on anything that needed to be fixed. Danny had a way of telling a story and giving his time and attention to all who asked that of him. He was indeed, the hardest worker you’ve ever met. His zest for life pushed him to always be learning something new and meeting new friends.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Danny is survived by his wife, Kimberly; children, Randy (Donna) Moore and Andrea (Mike) Geglia; grandchildren, Tyler, Lily, Octavia, Penelope and Joseph; siblings, Sue (David) Quarantello, Charles (Cindy) Moore and Paul (Holly) Moore; loyal four-legged companion, Missy; mother of his children, Rosemary Steffen, as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

MEDINA – Sherry V. Callara, 74, of Medina entered into rest on Thursday, May 13, 2021 at Unity Hospital in Rochester. She was born on February 15, 1947 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, a daughter of the late Dutch Harvey and Bernice (Palon) Carpenter.

A longtime resident of Medina, Sherry was the owner-operator of Callara’s Taxi Service in Medina. She enjoyed spending time with her great-grandbabies, whom she loved dearly.

She was predeceased by her husband, Peter J. Callara in 2014; daughter, Lisa B. Callara in 2011; son, Jacob Callara in 2019; and siblings, Jack Suter, Kenneth Carpenter and Steven Carpenter.

Survivors include her son, Dino J. Callara; daughter in-law, Karen Sanders; grandchildren, Jewel Fidanza, Monique (Gary) Hampson, Brennen Callara (Danesha Bonk), Dominick Callara and Logan Callara; great-grandchildren, Jace, Jaxen, Juliette Hampson, Peyton and Preston Callara; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert E. and Gail A. Kester of Middleport were reunited on their 44th anniversary on Sept. 5, 2020.

Robert E. Kester was the son of the late Robert and Loretta Kester.  Gail A. Kester was the daughter of the late George and Ruth Vandenberghe.  Robert graduated in 1961 from West Seneca High School and Gail graduated in 1966 from Fairport High School.

They leave behind their five children: Jennifer (Mike) Braun, R. Sean (Paula) Kester, Charlene (Kenny) Heschke, Yvonne (Christopher) Lane, and Robin (Tom) Greg; grandchildren: Jacqueline Braun, Corey (Alicia) Martin, Adam Braun, Andrea (Tina) Braun, Julia Braun, Olivia Kester, Solenne Greg, Seth Lane and Roman Greg; brother, Paul (Lori) Kester; sisters: Suzanne Kester, Jean Vandenberghe (Barbara Branski); niece, Kaitlyn (Vince) Cherry; nephew, Jeffrey (Kristina) Kester; several cousins and many friends in the Middleport Community, their Middleport Methodist Church family, and at the Middleport Fire Department.  They have resided in Middleport since 1977 where they raised their family.

Kevin Carl Gaylord, 65, of Lockport, NY passed away in Millard Filmore hospital in Amherst, NY. Kevin was born on Aug. 18, 1955 in Albion, NY to Almond (Sonny) and Charlotte Gaylord. He graduated from Holley High School in 1973 and afterwards was a fixture on local softball fields. He was a carpet installer by trade, before becoming a principal and teaching at Christian schools in Medina and Tonawanda. Kevin was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  He was a song leader and adult Sunday School teacher for many years at his church, Shalom Baptist in North Tonawanda.

He is survived by his wife Shirl (States); children: Brandon (Danielle), Sonya (Daniel), Dan (Melissa); brother, Andrew, and six grandchildren. He is predeceased by his sister Beverly.

Calling hours will be Wed., May 12, 2021 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., with funeral services to follow immediately. Interment will be at Mt. Albion Cemetery the following morning, Thu., May 13 at 10 a.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial for George R. Bower, who died on Dec. 15, 2020 and Sandra G. Bower, who died Jan. 18, 2021, will be held at St. Mary’s Church, 9 South Main St. Holley, on Sat. May, 29 at 10:30 a.m. followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Tony M. Vanille, entered into rest unexpectedly on Mon., May 3, 2021 at the age of 62.

Born on Dec. 8, 1958 in Denison, Texas, Tony was a son of John N. Vanille and Nancy R. (Bush) McHugh. He was a graduate of Medina High School and went on to be the owner/operator of Tony’s Sewing Machine Repair Service for many years. A social person, Tony was a friend to many. He enjoyed playing euchre at the Junior Wilson Sportsman’s Club and was also involved in racing. Tony was an avid Buffalo Bills and Sabres fan. He was also a fan of John Wayne, loved listening to music and was a phenomenal pizza maker. Above all, Tony adored his grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as “Papa Tony.”

Survivors include his wife, Jemalen Vanille; three daughters: Jeanna (Tristan) Leuer; Tiffany Vanille (fiancé, Adam Finkney) and Gabriella (Justin) Loebel; four grandchildren: Griffin Leuer, Autumn Finkney, Freyja Darroch, Levi Loebel; his mother, Nancy McHugh; siblings, Angela Gross-Neal, John D. Vanille, Martin Vanille, Monica (Ray) Hartenberg and Mary (Jason) Clifton; also several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his father, John N. Vanille.

ALBION – Eleanor M. Cedar, 98, who was a very gentle woman, went to be with the Lord on May 9, 2021. She was born September 15, 1922 in Troy, PA, a daughter of the late Sylvester R. and Gertrude (Lee) Say and had lived in this area most of her life.

Eleanor was a member of Gaines Carlton Community Church and was the secretary of Jericho Fellowship Church. She loved the Lord and lived by the bible. She worked at Rochester Products for 28 years, retiring in 1981. She enjoyed making dolls and crocheting, especially afghans that she made and gave away.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clifford E. Cedar in 2012, whom she married November 25, 1940; her daughter, Eloise Elizabeth Webster; 5 brothers and her sister.

She is survived by her daughters, Darleen (Jimmy) Wright and Laurena (the late Cleve) LaFoy; her son, Clifford B. (Judy) Cedar; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins; and special loving friend, Bonnie Peters. She was loved by all that knew her.

HOLLEY – Donna L. Donovan, 55, died May 9, 2021 in her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 6, 1965 in Rochester to late Alexander and Joyce (Janus) Sorochty and had lived in this area since 1982.

Donna was a member of St. Mary’s RC Church in Holley, worked as a cashier at Big Lots in Brockport and as a cafeteria worker at Holley Central Schools. She liked to watch baseball, basketball and football but especially loved watching her son race his radio controlled cars.  Donna was a true lover of animals and received pure joy when she was interacting with “her kids” at school. She is survived by her husband of almost 24 years, William; her children, Brandon and Britney Donovan, both at home; her brother, Brian (Mary Ann) Sorochty of Batavia; her sisters, Lisa (Frank) Marcera of Brockport, Cathy (John) Mallet of Holley; her step-mother, Eileen Sorochty of Albion as well as several nieces and nephews.

ALBION/FLORIDA – Laura Ann (Dix) Brace, 84, died May 4, 2021 following a short and courageous battle with cancer. She was born October 1, 1936, a daughter of Robert and Ethel (Canham) Dix.

Laura enjoyed gardening, crafting and was an avid golfer, winning several awards for her outstanding golfing ability. She was a hairdresser and homemaker as she raised and cared for her four children. After they were grown, she owned and operated The Golden Thimble in Albion. After closing the shop, she went to work for the Canal Corporation. When she left the Canal Corporation she graciously cared for her youngest granddaughter Sarah until moving to Bradenton, FL. As her husband became ill, she cared for him and was always by his side during his battle with cancer.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband J. Donald Brace, Jr.; her daughter, Deborah Brace; four brothers, Arnold “Jake” Dix, Harold Dix, Howard Dix and Donald Dix; and two sisters, Mildred Dix Proctor and Betty Dix Woodworth.

She is survived by brother, David (Annette) Dix; son, J. Donald (Judy) Brace III; daughters, Connie (Ronald) Ebbs and Laurie (Andrew) VanHouten; grandchildren, Jennifer Gonzalez, Jason Ebbs, Marc Grimm, Julie and Randy VanHouten, Dylan Laney, Tresia and Sarah Brace; great-grandchildren, Bailey Gonzalez, Pyper Drake and Hannah Ebbs, and many nieces and nephews.

ALBION – John Stanley Kast, 103, passed away May 7, 2021.  Stanley was born on West Transit Church Road on December 29, 1917 to John T. and Ruth (Chapman) Kast and was a lifelong resident of this area.

Stanley went to school at the corner of Densmore Road and West Transit Church Road, and was proud to be the one to start the wood stove every morning in the winter. He finished his schooling at Albion. He then worked on and was a partner on the family farm for his entire life.  Stanley was an active member of many farm organizations, the town planning board, and Boy Scout Troop #48.

His family was the love of his life and he looked forward to them coming to the farm throughout the years. The farm was his passion and he knew what was happening there until the end. Stanley was active in the East Gaines Church and then in the Gaines Carlton Community Church until he stopped driving four years ago.

He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn (DeNagel) Kast in 2009 as well as his father and mother, John T. and Ruth Kast; sisters, Elsie (Howard) Plumb, Evelyn (Roy) Weisenborn and Marjorie (Lloyd) Hubbard; brothers, Rolland (Anita) Kast and Merwin Kast; brother-in-law, Raymond (Connie) DeNagel; and sister-in-law, Ruth Kast.

He is survived by his sons, David (Kathy) Kast and Paul Kast; grandchildren, John (Cheryl) Kast, Laura (Tom) Kaczmarek and Brett (Amanda) Kast; great-grandchildren, Kennedy Smelski, Tyler Kast, Sierra Kast, Logan Kast, Lea Kaczmarek, Brantley Kast and Easton Kast; his brother, Lavern Kast and many more extended family members, friends, and devoted aides.

LOCKPORT – Mabeline Stanley, 65, of Lockport, passed away at Niagara Hospice on May 4, 2021. She was born September 24, 1955 in Wilmington NC, a daughter of Annie and the late Robert Stanley, Sr.

Mabel was known for her love of family and friends. She has touched so many people in different ways and will truly be missed.

She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church before moving membership to Batavia House of God under the pastorship of Elder Ruth G. Stinson and eventually, Dino Leonard. We know Sister Mabel will be greatly missed but we have faith in the scripture; that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

Mabel was predeceased by her father; 3 brothers-in-law, Oscar Parks, Hubbert Winters and Lonnie Hamilton; granddaughter, Cashawna Parker; and great-granddaughter, Egypt.

She leaves to cherish her memories, 6 children – Sharon Dart of Springhill TN, Tasha (Anthony) Durant of Sophia NC, James Richardson of Lockport, Lakeisha Gibson of Albion, Katrina Drake of Batavia, and Sharnice Gibson of Rochester; 3 sisters, Brenda Winters of Albion, Annie Stanley of Batavia, and Betty Parks of Albion; brother, Robert Stanley, Jr. of Albion; 28 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 11^th, from 11 a.m. to noon at Oak Orchard Assembly of God, 12111 Ridge Rd. Medina NY 14103 where her funeral service will follow at noon.

Burial will be in Mt. Albion Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Dr. Lockport NY 14094.

Lysbeth “Betsy” Hoffman, 82, of Lakeside Bluff/Waterport died Feb. 18, 2021 in her home following a long illness.

The family will receive friends at the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes, Inc., 21 West Ave., Albion, on Sat., May 15, 2021 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.  followed by her Memorial Service immediately following visitation at noon.
