Joyce Ruth Blank, 91, of Holley passed away Jan. 9, 2022 at Edna Tina Wilson Living Center in Rochester.  She was born Sept. 7, 1930 in the Town of Clarendon, a daughter of the late Tracy and Florence (Bowen) Smith and had lived in this area all of her life.

Joyce was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Disciples United Methodist Church.  She worked as a Real Estate Agent, Town Clerk and Insurance Agent, and after worked in the cafeteria at Brockport Central School for many years, retiring in 2015.  She loved to cook and spend time with her family; especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William Blank; daughter, Karen J. Blank; brother, Frank (Mary Ann) Smith; and brother-in-law, Robert Blank.

She is survived by her sons: Kenneth (Carol Rademacher) Blank, Robert (Karen) Blank, Phillip (Jodi) Blank; grandchildren: Andrew (Nicole) Blank, Daniel (Jaylene) Blank, Stephen Blank, Michael (Amanda) Blank, Gregory (Brittany) Blank, Rachel and Caleb Blank, Joseph (Samantha) Lathigee, Afton (Tony) Rodriguez; several great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law: Donald (Joanne) Blank, Albert Blank; sister-in-law, Emma Blank; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

LYNDONVILLE – Robert (Bob) Nickerson, 89, of Lyndonville, NY/Ormond Beach, FL, died peacefully with his family at his side on January 14, 2022.

Bob was born in Albion and was an Army veteran who served in the Korean War.

His wife of 57 years, Patricia (Sargent) Nickerson, died in 2009.

Bob is survived by his partner of 11 years, Rose Declercq; two daughters and two sons, Debbie Klein of Fort Collins, CO, Dan Nickerson and Julie of Lewiston, NY, Robin Viklund and Mark of Lyndonville, NY, and Tim Nickerson and Brenda of Boylston, MA. He also leaves 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; Rose’s two sons, Eric Declercq and Lindsay of New York, NY and Chris Declercq and Monica of Del Mar, CA; one brother, Bill Nickerson and Marge of Jacksonville, FL; several in-laws and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life was held at the Ormond Heritage in Ormond Beach, FL, on January 18. There will be a celebration of life in Lyndonville on July 2nd time to be determined.

Godule Galope “Gigi” Barcena, 76, entered into rest at her home with her family by her side on Tue., Jan. 25, 2022.

A daughter of the late Uldarico and Cleofe (Velez) Galope, Gigi was born in Kibawe, Philippines on July 6, 1945. She married Arthur F. Barcena in 1966 and in 1975 the couple immigrated to the United States.

She has been a well-regarded member of the Medina community ever since and raised a family of four sons. She worked as a Registered Nurse, first at the Arnold Gregory Hospital in Albion, Albion Correctional Facility, the Medina Memorial Hospital and the Orchard Rehab & Nursing Center in Medina. Working up until a few months prior to her passing, Gigi was a hardworking and dedicated Nurse to say the least. Gigi possessed a professionalism and competency that she instilled in her family and also her many dear coworkers and friends in the community.

Aside from her work life, Gigi was an excellent cook and loved to entertain. She also enjoyed line dancing and going to the casinos. She was a parishioner of Holy Trinity R.C. Parish, St. Mary’s Church in Medina and also belonged to the Filipino-American Association of Western New York. Gigi’s steadfast presence will be sincerely missed by her loving family, friends, coworkers and patients whom she so devotedly cared for over the years.

In addition to her parents, Gigi was preceded in death by her brother, Dixon.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Arthur Barcena; sons: Romeo, Dennis, Bryan and Brent Barcena; grandchildren: Alexis, Mark, Paul and Andrew Barcena; brother, Epafrodito; sister, Myrna; and many nieces and nephews.

James R. Lotz, 84, of Middleport, passed away on Tue., Jan. 25, 2022 at Medina Memorial Hospital.

Born March 30, 1937 in Akron, NY Jim was a son of the late Roy F. and Thelma R. (Frisch) Lotz. He married the former Nanette M. Karney on July 29, 1961 at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Middleport. Jim started working at an early age. He worked for Bathrick Enterprises in Lockport for many years, then for Sigma Motors in Medina. Jim was a kind, quiet and faithful man. He was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church for over 60 years. He enjoyed fishing, watching old western movies and especially spending time with family and friends.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Nanette Lotz of Middleport and many close friends.

Calling hours will be held on Sat., Jan. 29 from 1-3 p.m. at Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina, where his funeral service will immediately follow at 3 p.m. Masks will be mandatory. Private interment will be in Boxwood Cemetery, Medina. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Carole O. Horton, 89, of Medina passed away on Sun., Jan. 23, 2022 at Absolut Care of Gasport.

Carole was born in Cooter, Missouri, an only child to the late Jessie C. and Iris C. (Michie) Burkett on Jan. 17, 1933. She grew up in the small community of Holcomb, Missouri. On Dec. 15, 1951 she married William D. Horton and together they raised a family of three children. The couple lived in Niagara Falls for many years and in 1972 moved to Connecticut. After retirement, they moved back to Western New York, first to Lockport and finally to Medina. Carole enjoyed gardening, embroidery and loved to sew.

Carole was preceded in death by her husband, William D. Horton on July 14, 2021.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children: Lyn (Bruce) Galley of Sanborn, Marlene (Gary) Hill of Medina and James (Laurie) Horton of Torrington, Connecticut; grandchildren: Randall Galley, David and Daniel Hill and David, Michelle and Sherianne Horton; seven great-grandchildren; and two nieces and a nephew.

Stephen R. Fralick, 78, of Medina, entered into rest on Thu., Jan. 20, 2022 at the Medina Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 13, 1943 in Buffalo, Mr. Fralick was a son of the late Carlton D. and Lenora I. (Brown) Fralick. He grew up in the Newfane area. Excelling in athletics, Mr. Fralick was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed coaching. He was an avid fan of the Buffalo Bills and the NY Yankees. He also enjoyed sailing.

Survivors include five children: Kimberly (Steven) Balcerzak of Medina, Christian (Rochelle) Fralick of Colorado, Michael (Alexandra) Fralick of Lewiston, Heather (Kevin) Wagner of Newfane and Joshua (Sasha) Fralick of New Jersey; grandchildren: Bradley, Maggie, Jusett, Jenna, Julian, Maddie, JJ and Avery; and sister in-law, Patricia Fralick of Newfane.

Stephen was predeceased by his wife, Lynette Bielak Fralick and his brother, Robert Fralick.

Cindy J. Pera, 68, of Holley passed away Jan. 20, 2022, at the Martin Linsin Hospice Residence in Albion after a long battle with cancer. She was born Sept. 1, 1953, in Albion to the late Edward and Luella Westfall.

Cindy’s greatest love was her family.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Sandy Bartlett and sister-in-law, Cheryl Lestorti.

Cindy is survived by her husband of 44 years, John; sons: Thomas John (Dawn) Pera, John Anthony (Monica) Pera; sisters: Becky Birch, Shirley Bedrin, Connie Whittier, Pauline Zimmerman, Terry L. (Bill) Almekinder and Linda (Dan) Wawaro; sisters-in-law: Marlene (Roy) Kenyon, Robin Pera, Pamela Pera; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

HOLLEY – Roxanne LaMartina-Salvatore, 71, passed away January 21, 2022 at Medina Memorial Hospital after fighting a long illness. She was surrounded by her loving family. Roxanne was born January 31, 1950 in Brockport, a daughter of the late Lewis and Rose (Tiberio) Simboli and had lived in this area all of her life.

She worked from home as a beautician for many years and owned and operated Roxy’s Corner Café in Albion. Roxanne was very family oriented and loved spending time with her family, cooking for Sunday sauce dinners and watching the Buffalo Bills. She enjoyed baking as well, especially Christmas cookies, pizzelles and breads. She worked for Lifetime Assistance as a supervisor/caretaker in Brockport and Rochester. Roxanne was a very caring person, always putting others first.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her son, Anthony; sister, Roslee (Rocco) Sidari, Jr.; and brother-in-law, Thomas Vickery.

She is survived by her husband Jerry Salvatore, Sr.; her sons, Joseph LaMartina and Jeffery (Danielle) LaMartina; step-sons, Michael Salvatore and Jerry (Jean Craddock) Salvatore; grandchildren, Brayden, Giovanni, Marissa and Makayla; sister, Carolyn Vickery; brother, Nicholas (Virginia) Long and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marlin “Red” Zastrow, 82, of Gasport, NY, devoted father, husband, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend passed away unexpectedly on Wed., Jan 19, 2022.

Born in Wilson, NY to Elmer and Gertrude Zastrow on March 15, 1939.  Red retired from Harrison Radiator.  He was an active member of Terry’s Corners Firehall for 57 years.

Red’s life revolved around his family, especially those of his six daughters. He was a constant and loving presence in their lives, made the extra effort to stay in touch, share a good laugh and openly express his love for them. He had many friendships that spanned decades and always enjoyed a cold beer with friends.

He is survived by his sisters: Myra Fry of Lockport, NY, and Annabelle (Arthur) Bird of Niagara Falls, NY; daughters: Tammy (Rob) Flaherty of Annapolis, MD, Debbie (Mike) Palladino of Tonawanda, NY, Sherrie (Dan) MacNeill of Homer, NY, Kelly (Dale) Wick of Mendon, NY, Darcy Watson of N. Tonawanda, NY, Paula (Brian) LeBere of Englewood, Fla.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  He is predeceased by his wife, Carrol (Welton); sisters: Joan Vought, Pauline Fry, Phyllis Shank; and brother, Howard Zastrow.

Often silently, giving no warning, but surely relentlessly, deaf to the expressions of human woe, the angel of death flits into our midst and as if mocking our blindness, touches in the stillness of the night one in whom we see no alarming signs of decay. When the morning breaks we are mourning for one dead. Such are today the friends of Jesse R Bieber. He departed this life at 12:04 p.m. on Wed., Jan. 19, 2022, an illness of COVID-19 after only 21 days.

Jesse was born on Feb. 15, 1965, at EJ Myers Hospital, Buffalo. On Jan. 19, 2022 he took his last breath in the same hospital that he took his first breath, currently known as ECMC.

Jesse was blessed with amazing parents: Douglas (deceased) and Mary Jane Bieber.  At the age of 32 Jesse was reunited with his birth father, Kenny (Joanne) Parris and predeseased by his step-dad, Harold Cleckley.

He leaves behind the love of his life, and as he affectionately calls her, his first wife, of 33 years 2 months and 1 day, Jennifer (Bruning) Bieber along with his two loving children: Joshua Bieber of Middleport and Jolene (Jackie) Bieber of Gasport.

He is survived by his mothers-in-law: Charlene Richey and Mary Beth Dooley; sisters: Melissa (Todd) Hansler, Tricia (Chris) Suba, Kerry James, Shonda Cleckley; sisters-in-law: Gretchen Bruning, Megan Bruning, Ingrid Bruning; brothers: Keith (Tammy) Parris, Kenny (Michelle) Parris, Kevin Parris and Jason Cleckley; brothers-In-law: Martin (Jenna) Bruning, Gabe (Jenna) Bruning. He was Godfather to Miss Charitie Bruning, Miss Hannah Suba and was predeseased by Wyatt Jeffords.

He is also survived by countless nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. He was loved by so many dear and cherished friends.  He loved you all!

Jesse loved his family, farming, auctions, his beagle puppy Jack, spending time by the campfire with friends, going to concerts, taking long drives and as he would say he was a “collector of collectibles and treasures” as well as a tractor enthusiast. He had a passion for Town of Royalton history and genealogy. He helped dozens of people find and reunite with their birth families.

He was the Town of Royalton Historian for 16 years. He worked for the Department of Agriculture for 12 years as an enumerator. He loved visiting all the farms around Western New York and enjoyed talking to all the farmers. He was the keeper of the Memories of Royalton, Gasport, and Middleport Facebook page.

He was a member of the Town of Royalton Historical Society, Royalton Planning Board, Trinity Lutheran Church of Wolcottsville, Roy-Hart Agricultural Education Committee, Niagara County 4-H program, Niagara County Farm Bureau, WNY Gas & Steam Engine Association and Chairman of the Royalton Bicentennial Committee.  He was a former member of the Cornell Cooperation Board of Directors.

Jesse was known for his quick wit and sense of humor. He also had a vast knowledge of not only history but of trivia, agriculture and tractors. He was a jack of all trades which was showcased when Jesse and Jennifer built their own home with the help of their amazing family and friends.

Family will receive friends at Bates, Wallace and Heath Funeral Home, Middleport, NY on Tue., Jan. 25 from 12-3 p.m. with an open casket and a closed casket from 5-8 p.m.

We will meet at Trinity Lutheran Church, the red brick church, in Wolcottsville, at high noon on Wed., Jan. 26.  Directly after the service we will proceed to the Wolcottsville Fire Hall for a Celebration of Life! Please bring your memories and your laughter.  Family and friends will be present at the fire hall until 6 p.m. Casual dress is required at all arrangements, as per Jesse’s request.

Elizabeth A. “Liz” Cloy, 62, of Middleport died in her home following a long illness on Jan. 18, 2022 surrounded by her family. 

She was born Nov. 27, 1959 in Lockport to Richard and Lela (Eckhardt) Arlington and was a life-long resident of this area.  Liz had worked as a server at the former Basket Factory Restaurant and then in later years at Lockport Savings Bank in Medina.  She was a member of the Middleport United Methodist Church, enjoyed painting, reading, doing puzzles, taking walks and baking cookies with her granddaughter.  

Mrs. Cloy was predeceased by her husband, Kevin. 

She is survived by her son, Glen Sager and granddaughter, Skigh of Middleport; parents: Lela and William Lathrop of Lockport; brother, Scott (Deborah) Arlington niece, Brittany Shepard of Fla.; good friend, Betty Hoste and her beloved dog, Lily.

Douglas “Doug” Rodas passed away on Jan. 13, 2022 at Unity Hospital. Born on July 20, 1962, Doug was a son of the late Luther and Shirley (Rose) Rodas. 

After graduation from Brockport High School, he became an electrician working at SUNY Brockport, where he met the love of his life, his wife Dawn (Trolley) Rodas. He loved the great outdoors, including hunting, fishing, and camping, classic cars, motorcycles, and spending quality time with his family. Doug will also be remembered for his gentle and loving nature with all animals, especially Cocker Spaniels and his two Yellow Labs, Harley and Sammie.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn; step-daughter, Erica (Mark) Kuntz; daughter, Connie Rodas; granddaughter, Julianna Kuntz, and three siblings.

Doris E. Quintern, 84, of Gasport left this world to be reunited with her one true love, Deane, Jan. 17, 2022.  She was born June 17, 1937 in the Town of Yates to August and Gladys (Plummer) Riemer and was a life-long resident of this area.

For many years, Doris taught Sunday School and Confirmation Class at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Lockport where she was also a member and belonged to the Altar Guild.  She enjoyed working in her yard and tending to her flowers; as well as watching soap operas, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.  Doris was also an avid NY Yankees Fan, but most of all she was very family oriented and a devoted wife and mother.

Mrs. Quintern was predeceased by her husband, Deane; son, John; grandson, Robbie; and siblings: Donald Riemer, Joyce Banazwski, Marian Warne, Shirley Schnackel, and MaryLou Young.  She is survived by her sons: William (Pamela) Quintern of MD, David (Darla) Quintern of Ransomville; daughters: Eileen (Ron) Gawel of Niagara Falls, Jeanne Quintern of Gasport, Jennifer Atherton of Fla.; sisters: Margo Schuner of Medina, Carol Hibbard of Fla.; 15 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

MEDINA – Mary Ann Kelly, 78, entered into rest on Friday, Jan. 14, 2022 at the Villages of Orleans Health & Rehab Center in Albion. Born February 26, 1943 in Medina, Mary Ann was the daughter of the late John W. and Alice (O’Brien) Kelly.

She was a graduate of Medina High School in the class of 1960. On April 24, 1965 she married Robert F. Bessel and together raised two children. A devout Catholic, Mary Ann was a lifelong parishioner of Holy Trinity Parish, St. Mary’s Church in Medina. Early on in life she worked for Cooks Wholesale in Medina, then for Fisher-Price Toys and finally for BernzOmatic. Mary Ann loved gardening, doing crafts and especially spending time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her brother, John W. “Bill” Kelly, Jr. in 1971; and former husband, Robert Bessel in 1992.

Survivors include her daughter, Kelly (Michael) Bice of Watertown; son, Jason (Joleen) Bessel of Medina; grandchildren, Megan and Hannah Oram, Olivia and Johnathan Bessel; step-grandchildren, Dylan and Kassidy Bice; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Ann Bane.

HOLLEY –  Carol A. Passaniti passed away peacefully on Monday, January 10, 2022.

She was predeceased by her husband Virgil and brother Bill Myers.

She is survived by her daughters, Heather (Dave) Dock and Tammy (Jim) Tambe; grandchildren, Sean Ziegler, James Tambe, Lindsey Tambe and Jessica (Pete) Tambe and great grandma to Corina Rae.

MEDINA – Larry W. Scharlau, 75, of Medina, passed away unexpectedly while on a holiday vacation in Mexico with his wife and family on December 27, 2021. Born on February 15, 1946 in Medina, Larry was a son of the late Wilbur and Lucille (Clark) Scharlau.

He married the former Bonnie Conroy on May 26, 1979. He worked for many years for the Town of Ridgeway Highway Department. Larry was an avid hunter and enjoyed four-wheeling. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Larry was predeceased by his in-laws, Howard and Sylvia Conroy.

Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Bonnie Scharlau; sons, Michael and Bobby; daughter, Kay (Garrison); grandchildren, Garrett, Connor, Blake and Genevieve; siblings, Jimmy, Donna, Cindy and Chris; several nieces and nephews; and best friend, Mark Prawel.

MEDINA – Rita F. Mondo, 94, of Medina, entered into rest on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at Medina Memorial Hospital’s North Wing Skilled Nursing Facility. Born in Medina on May 15, 1927, Rita was a daughter of the late Leo and Mary (Kaniecki) Fraczak.

She married the late Russell J. Mondo and together were lifelong residents of Medina. Rita worked for many years as a bank teller at the Medina Savings & Loan Association. She was a devout Catholic and was a parishioner of Holy Trinity R.C. Parish, St. Mary’s Church in Medina. She and Russell were avid travelers. Rita was a great baker and was well known for her chocolate pies. Social by nature, Rita loved to have company over and enjoyed playing cards at the Senior Citizens of Western Orleans. Rita was always willing to lend a helping hand and will be fondly remembered as a loving wife, sister, aunt and great aunt.

Rita was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Russell Mondo in 2012; siblings, Virginia Fraczak, Joseph (Lois) Franklin, Sr., Stanley “Slats” (Martha) Fraczak, Leonard (Lucretia) Fraczak, Isabelle (Joseph) Mastrimonico, Dorothy (Francis) Garbarino, Marion (Edward) Washak and Irene (Paul) Sterling; brothers in-law, Caesar Mondo, Warren Scarlett and John Poler.

Survivors include, sisters in-law, Mary Scarlett, Teresa Poler and Harriet Mondo; several nieces and nephews including Cynthia Hewitt, Virginia Klotzbach, Christine Biernacki and Clara Lake; and many great nieces and nephews.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held at a later date to be announced later in the spring. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Medina Memorial Hospital- North Wing Activities Program, 200 Ohio St., Medina, NY 14103, Holy Trinity Parish, 211 Eagle St., Medina, Knights of Columbus 418 Main St., Medina or to the Senior Citizens of Western Orleans, 615 West Ave., Medina. Alice Grier, 97 of Bates Road, Medina, NY, died on Jan. 12, 2022.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Clarence Grier.

Left to mourn her passing is her great-niece, Sydell Green; 9 great-great nieces and nephews; and very close friend Lloyd Aston.

The family will receive friends at the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Home 21 West Ave. Albion, NY 14411 on Thu., Jan. 20 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. where her service will immediately follow at 12 p.m. Interment will be held in Boxwood Cemetery, Medina.

Amy C. Herbert, entered into rest on Dec. 25, 2021 in West Orange, NJ. Born on March 22, 1946 in Rochester, she was a daughter of the late Walter A. and Margaret (Cato) Krozel.

Amy graduated from Holley High School and went on to study political science at St. Lawrence University. Amy was a wife and mother and later became a teacher by obtaining her Master’s degree in elementary education at Nazareth College, in Rochester. She worked for many years as a substitute teacher in the Rochester City School District. Amy loved to read, travel, shop and spend time with family and friends. She will lovingly be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother.

Amy is survived by her two daughters: Jennifer L. Herbert (Joseph Militello) and Margaret A. (Christopher) Burns; grandchildren: Isabella Militello, Quinn Burns and Emily Burns; sister, Gail (late Tom) Younker; brother, Ken (Sue) Krozel; nieces: Kim (Younker) Ashworth, Melissa (Younker) Althouse, Stephanie (Younker) Valenti, Holly (Krozel) Gilpin, Emily (Krozel) Days; and nephews: Tom Younker and Ken Krozel.

 A memorial service will be announced for a later date in the spring to be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Medina. Burial will be in Boxwood Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina.
