Olean scored a straight set 25-21, 25-20, 25-9 victory over Roy-Hart in the Section VI Class B volleyball state qualifier match this evening at Cheektowaga.

Olean advanced to the qualifier by downing Depew in three sets in the Class B1 final.

Niagara-Orleans League champion Roy-Hart gained a spot in the qualifier by capturing the Class B2 title with a five set win over Salamanca.

Lauren Snyder and Raegan Kern both had 4 spiking kills, Kylie McOmber 3 kills nd 4 aces and Ryleigh Capen 12 assists for Roy-Hart.

Section VI champion Wilson edged Section V champion Naples 3-2 in overtime in the Class C Far West Regional this evening at West Seneca as Aidan Neumann scored all three goals for the Lakemen.

The victory advances Wilson to next weekend’s state semifinal.

Scoring in every quarter, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton downed Barker/Roy-Hart 30-13 in the semifinals of the Section VI Class C football playoffs this evening at Barker.

Chautauqua Lake jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead on a 7 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bryden Gibbs to Asher Olson and an extra point kick by Carson Fairbank.

Barker/Roy-Hart though answered right back to knot the score at 7-7 on a 61 yard touchdown run by Carter DerSarkissian and an extra point kick by Tysen McCaa.

However, Chautauqua Lake regained the lead for good by a 14-7 margin at halftime on a 9 yard TD run by Clayton Smith and a PAT kick by Fairbank in the first minute of the second quarter.

Barker/Roy-Hart did have a chance to retie the game early in the third quarter but lost possession on an interception at the Eagles 4 yard line.

The visiting Eagles then increased their lead to 23-7 late in the third quarter on a 82 yard TD pass play from Gibbs to Olson, an extra point kick by Fairbank and a safety.

Barker/Roy-Hart did cut the deficit to 23-13 two minutes into the final quarter on a 3 yard TD run by McCaa. A big 50 yard pass completion from McCaa to Ashton Ark on a busted play highlighted the drive.

However, the Bulls could get no closer as the two-point conversion attempt failed.

The Eagles capped off the win on a 21 yard TD run by Smith and a PAT kick by Fairbank with two minutes remaining.

Improving to 9-1, Chautauqua Lake will next face C South Division rival, undefeated (10-0) Southwestern in the Class C title game next Thursday at Highmark Stadium. Southwestern downed Eden 69-21 in the other semi.

Barker/Roy-Hart, which captured the C North Division title with a 6-0 record to earn the No. 1 seed, finishes the season with an 8-2 record.

Class D Semifinals
Rivals Newfane and Wilson both scored semifinal wins this evening to advance to next Thursday’s Section VI Class D championship game.

Newfane defeated Silver Creek/Forestville 38-0 and Wilson bested Gowanda/Pine Valley 35-8.

Akron captured a sixth straight Section VI Class C field hockey championship by downing Niagara-Orleans League foe Barker 3-0 this evening at Alden.

Mackenzie Tomporowski scored what proved to be the game winning goal for Akron with seven minutes to go in the third quarter breaking a scoreless deadlock.

The Lady Tigers quickly doubled their advantage just five minutes later on a goal by Morgan Tomporowski.

Morgan Tomporowski tacked on Akron’s final goal with 8 minutes to go in the fourth quarter.

Goalie Marissa Brege anchored the defense for Akron which has now registered shutouts in all 13 games against N-O League opponents this season.

Improving to 15-1, Akron will next face East Rochester from Section V in the Class C Far West Regional at 2 p.m. Saturday at Alden.

Looking to keep the momentum from last weekend’s quarterfinal victory, Barker/Roy-Hart will host Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton in the semifinals of the Section VI Class C football playoffs at 7 p.m. Friday at Barker.

Both teams posted high scoring wins in the quarterfinals as Barker/Roy-Hart downed Salamanca 46-30 and Chautauqua Lake routed Akron 70-12.

“We are very excited fot this next challenge,” said Barker/Roy-Hart Coach Bill Bruning. “Chautauqua Lake is a very talented and well coached team. We need to continue to play our brand of football.”

Both teams bring 8-1 records into the semifinals. Barker/Roy-Hart captured the C North Division title with a 6-0 record while Chautauqua Lake went 6-1 in the C South Division finishing second to undefeated (7-0, 9-0) Southwestern.

“The key for us! This has not changed since week 1,” said Bruning. “Win the turnover battle, Explosive plays (create ours and limit their’s) and tackling.”

Leading the Chautauqua Lake attack is quarterback Brayden Gibbs who has passed for 1,365 yards and 17 touchdowns and rushed for 273 yards and 5 TD.

The Eagles rushing attack is led by Thandon Bensink who has rushed for 689 yards and 9 TD. The leading receivers include Devin Hewes (44 catches for 587 yards and 6 TD), Asher Olson (26 for 411 yards and 6 TD) and Carson Fairbank (20 for 272 yards and 4 TD).

“Defensively we need to be gap sound for the running attack and play sound pass coverage,” said Bruning. “They have a balanced attack and if we can get them to play one dimensional that would be great.”

Quarterback Tysen McCaa, who has passed for 682 yards and 10 touchdowns and rushed for 522 yards and 5 TD leads the Barker/Roy-Hart attack.

The Bulls rushing attack also features Joey Reiter (935 yards, 11 TD), Carter DerSarkissian (476 yards, 5 TD), Anthony Adinolfe (370 yards, 4 TD) and Vince Fazzio (354 yards, 7 TD).

Fazzio also leads the receiving corps with 13 catches for 256 yards and 5 TD. Adinlfe has 12 receptions for 156 yards and 3 TD and Ashton Ark 10 for 180 and 2 TD.

The victor will face the winner of the Eden (8-1) at Southwestern (9-0) semifinal in the Class C championship game at Highmark Stadium on November 13.

No. 3 seed Roy-Hart outlasted No. 8 Salamanca in a five set thriller 25-9, 25-27, 22-25, 25-11, 15-12 in the Section VI Class B2 volleyball championship match this evening at Cheektowaga.

Trailing 10-9 in the decisive fifth set, Roy-Hart rallied to take the set and the match as Zoe Healey registered a spiking kill for point 10, Raegan Kern service aces for points 11 and 12, Grace Pearl a kill for point 14 and Ryleigh Capen an ace for the set and match winning 15th point.

“The girls were able to dig deep, trust each other and work together as a team to make that comeback,” said Coach Eliza Feocco. “Just incredible.”

The sectional championship is the first for Roy-Hart since 1996. The Lady Rams will next face the Class B1 winner (either Depew or Olean) for the Section VI Class B berth in the state tournament on Friday.

Roy-Hart also got off to a strong start taking the opening set 25-9 as Kern had a huge run of 11 straight service points (7-17) which included four aces.

However, Salamanca answered back to take the next two sets 27-25 and 25-22, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Mckenzie Crouse had a big run of 11 straight points (12-22) for the Lady Warriors in the second set.

Roy-Hart though rebounded to knot the match at 2-2 by taking the fourth set 25-11 as Lauren Snyder served up 6 points in a row (15-20) giving the Lady Rams a 20-5 lead.

That set the stage for the decisive fifth set for the Lady Rams which was highlighted by kills by Snyder, Kern and Pearl and aces by Kylie McOmber, Kern and Capen.

Pearl had a total of 13 kills, Snyder 8, Kern and McOmber 6 each. Capen led the Lady Rams in assists with 26.

Roy-Hart will now take an 18-1 record into Friday’s state qualifier match.

The title game matchup will be a very familiar one as top seeded Akron will face Niagara-Orleans League rival No. 2 Barker for the Section VI Class C field hockey championship at 8 p.m. Thursday on the blue turf at Alden.

It will mark the 15th time in the last 24 years that Akron and Barker have met in the title contest. Barker holds a 9-5 lead in the series but Akron has won the last three meetings (2020, 2021 and 2022).

Both teams had close contests in the semifinals as Akron advanced by edging No. 5 Eden 4-3 in overtime while Barker nipped No. 3 Medina 2-1.

Akron brings a 14-1 record into the final while Barker is 13-5. The Lady Tigers won both meetings during the N-O season by scores of 3-0 and 1-0.

Morgan Tomporowski leads the Akron offense with 41 goals as Mackenzie Tomporowski and Madison Gates each have 11.

The Akron defense, which is anchored by goalie Marissa Brege (0.33 goals against average) has registered 13 shutouts.

Madelina Pavlock leads the Barker offense with 22 goals as Sophia Pavlock has 6, Jordyn Kinne 4 and Sophia Gerhardt 3.

The victor on Thursday will advance to the state playoffs.

Holley grad and GCC sophomore Emma Brady has been named Region III Player of the Year

Four Holley High graduates are among seven Genesee Community College women’s soccer team players who have been named to the All Region III squad.

The Holley quartet includes three first team honorees – sophomore midfielders Emma Brady and Samantha Bates and sophomore defender Bella Thom along with second team selection freshman forward Alivia Wolf.

Brady also also received another special honor as she has been named Region III Player of the Year.

On the season to date Bates has had 14 goals and 13 assists, Brady 6 goals and 14 assists, Wolf 8 goals and 3 assists and Thom 4 goals and 5 assists.

GCC’s other All Region honorees include first team selection Ava Gray, a freshman defender from Byron-Bergen, second team honoree Piper Hyde, a freshman forward from Oakfield-Alabama and third team selection Natalie Prinzi, a freshman goalie from Byron-Bergen.

Hyde has 10 goals and 5 assists to date this season, Gray 1 goal and 1 assist and Prinzi 59 saves and a save percentage of .894.

In addition, GCC Coach Jeff Reyngoudt was named Region III Coach of the Year.

GCC captured the Region III championship this past weekend to earn a trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament. GCC will face Rowan College from New Jersey in the quarterfinals next week.

Byron-Bergen earned a trip back to the state tournament by downing Holley 4-0 in the Section V Class C state qualifier game this evening at Caledonia-Mumford.

Byron-Bergen, which captured the state Class C title last year, took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Mia Gray.

The Lady Bees then pulled away with three unanswered second half goals by Gray, Anastasia Kuszlyk and Grace DiQuattro.

Byron-Bergen advanced by defeating Kendall 1-0 in the Section V Class C2 championship game.

Holley advanced by edging Canisteo-Greenwood 2-1 in overtime in the Class C1 final.

Byron-Bergen advances to the Class C regional against Section VI champion Wilson with a 18-2 record while Holley finishes the season at 13-7-1.

All of the scoring came off of corner opportunities as No. 2 seed Barker edged No. 3 Medina 2-1 in the semifinals of the Section VI Class C field hockey playoffs this evening at Barker.

Barker grabbed a 1-0 lead with 2:30 remaining in the first quarter as Madelina Pavlock scored off a corner by Kaylee Stoll.

That same combination of Stoll to Pavlock clicked again off a corner with 11:57 to go in the final quarter for what  proved to be the game winning goal giving Barker a 2-0 lead.

Medina answered right back a minute later as Penelope Schalck scored off a corner by Lilah Class to cut the deficit to 2-1 but the Mustangs could not net the equalizer.

Improving to 13-5, Barker will now face top seeded Niagara-Orleans League champion Akron in the Class C championship game at 8 p.m. Thursday at Alden.

Medina finishes the season with an 11-7 overall record.

Akron nipped No. 5 seed Eden 4-3 in overtime in the other semifinal on a goal by Mackenzie Tomporowski.

Morgan Tomporowski also had a pair of goals on the evening for Akron.

Setting the tone at the outset by romping to a 25-9 win in the opening set, No. 3 seed Roy-Hart went on to complete a three set sweep of visiting No. 7 JFK by scores of 25-17, 25-15 this evening in the semifinal round of the Section VI Class B2 volleyball playoffs.

Peyton May served up points 1-8, Grace Pearl 13-17 and Raegan Kern 21-25 in the opening set to get the Lady Rams rolling.

Pearl had 10 spiking kills on the evening as Kylie McOmber had 7 and Lauren Snyder 5.

Roy-Hart advances to Wednesday’s B2 final at 5:30 p.m. at Cheektowaga against the winner of the No. 5 Springville vs. No. 8 Salamanca semifinal.

Field Hockey semis postponed
This evening’s Medina at Barker Section VI Class C field hockey semifinal was postponed due to lightning and has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The No. 5 Eden vs. No. 1 Akron semifinal at Alden was also postponed by lightning with Akron leading 2-1 in the second quarter. The contest is expected to be completed on Tuesday.
