Holley High graduate Samantha Bates provided the game winning goal in dramatic fashion as No. 6 seed Genesee Community College nipped No. 3 Rowan College South Jersey Gloucester 1-0 in overtime this evening in the quarterfinals of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III women’s soccer national championship tournament.

Bates, who is a sophomore, scored the dramatic goal on a direct kick from 30 plus yards out with only 29 seconds remaining in the second overtime period.

The goal was the team leading 15th of the season for Bates who has been named Mid State Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Byron-Bergen graduate and GCC freshman Natalie Prinzi earned the shutout in goal.

GCC will now face No. 2 seed Dallas-Brookhaven in the semifinals on Friday. Dallas-Brookhaven blanked No. 7 Mohawk Valley 3-0 earlier in the day.

The game was originally scheduled to be played on Tuesday at Herkimer Community College but because of bad weather was postponed until today at SUNY-Poly near Utica.

Rivals Newfane and Wilson will clash for the Section VI Class D football championships at Highmark Stadium at 3 p.m. Thursday.

That contest recalls when Orleans rivals Medina and Albion renewed their long standing rivalry on Western New York’s biggest stage then Rich Stadium in 1988.

It was a thriller which saw the Mustangs come-from-behind to edge the Purple Eagles 14-7.

Albion grabbed an early 7-0 lead on a 1 yard touchdown run by Chris Rogers and an extra point kick by Kurt Jaeger.

However, Medina rallied to first close the gap to 7-6 late in the second quarter on a 3 yard TD run by Jim Snyder and then to claim the win with 8 minutes to go in the final period on a 39 yard TD run by Snyder who also caught the two-point conversion pass from quarterback Brian Fuller.

This Thursday’s Niagara County rivalry clash will match 10-0 Newfane vs. 9-1 Wilson. The Lakemen’s lone loss was a 46-25 setback at the hands of the Panthers to close out the regular season.

Newfane advanced by blanking Silver Creek/Forestville 38-0 in the Class D semifinals while Wilson downed Gowanda/Pine Valley by a similar score of 35-8.

The Panthers are led by quarterback Mac Capen who has rushed for 1,640 yards and 25 touchdowns and passed for 940 yards and 10 TDs. Camryn Stover has also rushed for 330 yards and 7 TDs and Camio Flowers for 418 yards and 6 TD.

The Lakemen are sparked by quarterback Vic Cusatis who has passed for 958 yards and 15 TDs and rushed for 437 yards and 9 TDs. Michel Ruble has also rushed for 73 yards and 7 TDs and Brock Lepsch 546 yards and 10 TDs while Ryan Hough has caught 53 passes for 487 yards and 11 TDs.

The  sectional title game appearance is the first for Newfane and the fifth for Wilson which is seeking its’ first championship.

The victor will advance to the Far West Regional of the state playoffs.

State Class C semifinal round tournament competition is next up on Saturday for both the Akron field hockey and Wilson boys soccer teams.

Akron will face Whitney Point (Section 4) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Arlington High School. The victor will face the winner of the Roundout Valley (Section 9) vs. Bayport Blue Point (Section 11) in the championship game on Sunday.

The Lady Tigers advanced to the semis by defeating East Rochester 8-0 in the Far West Regional. Whitney Point blanked Locust Valley 7-0 in the Regional.

Akron brings a 16-1 record into the semis while Whitney Point is 18-0-1.

Offensively the Lady Tigers have been led by Morgan Tomporowski who has 49 goals and 6 assists. Mackenzie Tomporowski has 13 goals and 4 assists, Madison Gates 11 goals and 3 assists and Madigan Regan 4 goals and 18 assists.

The appearance in the state semis is the second in three years for Akron which dropped a narrow 1-0 overtime decision to Carle Place in 2023.

Wilson will face Seton Catholic (Section 4) at 8:45 a.m. Saturday at Middletown High School. The victor will face the winner of the Maple Hill (Section 2) vs. North Salem (Section 1) semi in the finals on Sunday.

The Lakemen advanced to the semis by nipping Naples 3-2 in overtime in the Far West Regional. Seton Catholic scored a 3-1 Regional win over Bishop Ludden (Section 3).

Aidan Neumann has led Wilson in scoring with 54 goals and 13 assists as David Gurski has 20 goals and 13 assists and Cole Hermann 8 goals and 28 assists.

Wilson brings a 20-0 record into the semis while Seton Catholic is 13-4-2.

Undefeated (12-0) league champion Kendall has placed six players on the Genesee Region boys soccer All-Star team.

Senior Pablo Rosario-Reyes, who has been named G-R Player of the Year, heads the Eagles large contingent which also includes seniors Brandon Barrett, Vinnie D’Agostino, Jonas Rhodes, Jonny Conte and Jonathan Esposito.

Eagles junior Brenden Eichas has received Honorable Mention.

In addition, Kendall Coach Rich Esposito has been honored as G-R Coach of the Year.

Rosario-Reyes led Kendall with 24 goals and 25 assists. Barrett had 18 goals and 12 assists, Esposito 14 goals and 10 assists, Eichas 8 goals and 14 assists and D’Agostino 5 goals and 2 assists. In goal, Conte made 111 saves and had a goals against average of 0.39.

A trio of Holley players have earned spots on the Genesee Region League boys soccer All-Star team.

The Hawks trio includes seniors Cam Mosier and Hunter Pachla along with junior Chase Kempa.

In addition, a quartet of Holley players have earned Honorable Mention including senior Blake Coleman, juniors Cooper Wolf and Aidan Kelley and sophomore Dylan Warner.

On the season, Wolf had 6 goals and 3 assists, Kempa 5 goals and 8 assists, Coleman 5 goals and 2 assists, and Mosier 3 goals and 5 assists as Warner made 61 saves in goal and had a 0.67 goals against average.

The Lady Hawks honorees include junior Mia Thom along with sophomores Ava Mosier, Brynn Thomas and Kyla Burne.

Mosier led Holley in scoring with 15 goals and 5 assists. Burne had 5 goals and 4 assists, Thom 4 goals and 7 assists and Thomas 3 goals and 5 assists.

Holley also had two Honorable Mention selections – sophomores Hanna Ostrom and Jayna Burris.

Ostrom had 8 goals and 5 assists and Burris 5 goals and 9 assists.

Champion Kendall has placed four players on the Genesee Region League girls soccer All-Star team.

Kendall, which went 11-0 in G-R competition, is represented by senior Stella Kwatek, juniors Addison Kludt and Sophia Picardo and sophomore Ryleigh Denning.

In addition Lady Eagles Coach Angel Rosario has been named G-R Coach of the Year.

Denning led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 28 goals and 6 assists. Picardo had 16 goals and a team high 23 assists, Kwiatek 6 goals and 8 assists and Kludt 4 goals and 5 assists.

Kendall also had seven players earn Honorable Mention including seniors Alea Barrett, Brooke Rodas and Haley Ball along with junior Keara Reed, sophomores Izzy D’Agostino and Brynn Hardenbrook and eighth grader Jersie Drake.

Rodas made 94 saves in goal and had a 0.33 goals against average. Drake had 10 goals and 8 assists, Barrett 6 goals and 6 assists, Ball 3 goals, D”Agostino 1 goal and 2 assists, Reed 1 goal and Hardenbrook 2 assists.

Two Lyndonville players – senior Colton Smith and junior Jesus Reyes – have been named to the Genesee Region League All-Star boys soccer team.

Smith led Lyndonville in scoring with 15 goals and 8 assists.

Reyes had 8 goals and 7 assists.

The Tigers also had two Honorable Mention selections in defender Michael Alexander and goalie Brody Hazel who made 98 saves, both juniors.

Lyndonville went 6-6 in G-R competition and 10-8 overall.

Scoring four goals in each half, Akron rolled to an 8-0 victory over East Rochester in the Class C field hockey Far West Regional this afternoon at Alden.

Morgan Tomporowski scored six goals, two in the first quarter and four more in the second half, to lead the way for Akron which also got first half goals by Mackenzie Tomporowski and Brooke Milhollen.

Improving to 16-1, Niagara-Orleans League and Section VI Class C champion Akron advances to next Saturday’s state semifinal.

East Rochester, which is the only Class C field hockey team in Section V, winds up the season at 0-17.

Girls Soccer – Far West Regional
Byron-Bergen 5, Wilson 0
Continuing their quest for a second straight state championship, the Byron-Bergen Lady Bees blanked Wilson 5-0 in the Class C girls soccer Far West Regional this afternoon at Geneseo.

Mia Gray had the three goal hat-trick to lead the way for Byron-Bergen. She scored two quick goals in the first 12 minutes of the opening half and later netted another goal in the second half.

Grace DiQuattro and Elizabeth Starowitz also each scored a goal for Byron-Bergen which will take a 19-2 record into next Saturday’s state semifinal.

N-O League and Section VI Class C champion Wilson finishes the season at 17-2.

Medina High graduate Addison Paul is a freshman member of the Finger Lakes Community College women’s volleyball team which this past week captured a fifth straight Region III championship.

Paul, who earned Niagara-Orleans All League honors her senior year at Medina, is a defensive specialist.

Improving to 27-3 on the season, Finger Lakes claimed the Region III title with back-to-back three set victories over Genesee Community College in the semifinals and Fulton-Montgomery Community College in the finals.

Finger Lakes will now compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III national tournament at Cedar Rapids, Iowa on November 13 to 15.

The Finger Lakes roster also includes three former Genesee Region League players including sophomores Jackie Neureuter from Pembroke and Emma Balduf from Byron-Bergen along with freshman Alexa Ocampo from Elba.
