Local trio on NCCC wrestling squad

Contributed Photos – The Niagara County Community College squad includes a trio of local wrestlers this season. That freshman threesome includes, from left, Dominick Callara from Medina, Payton Grabowski from Lyndonville and Quinn Brown from Roy-Hart. Callara and Brown both captured Niagara-Orleans League titles last year. Grabowski claimed both the Section V Class B3 and small schools titles and went on to compete in the state championships.
Newfane thumps Albion to open title defense

Roaring out to a turnover aided 16-0 lead at the outset, Newfane went on to open defense of its Niagara-Orleans League boys basketball title by romping to an 88-34 victory over host Albion this evening.
Ben Dickinson erupted for 14 points, most coming on layups off turnovers, to spearhead Newfane’s attack in the opening period which finished with the Panthers up by 17 at 22-5.
Dominating with a very active, aggressive defense which keyed the fast break offense, Newfane went on to extend its advantage to 34 (45-11) at the half and to 48 (70-22) at the end of the third quarter.
Dickinson, who tallied 12 in the second period, finished with a game high 34 in just three-quarters of work.
Brayden Seitz added 13 and Nate Snow 10 for the Panthers which got point production from 11 players.
Blake Preston scored 17 and Kyle Radder 11 to lead Albion.
Akron 55, Barker 51
A big third period scoring edge keyed Akron to a narrow 55-51 N-O win at Barker.
Trailing 25-21 at the half, Akron used a 21-8 third period scoring edge to rally into the lead for good by a 42-33 margin.
Brale Abrams scored 11, Ben Gerstung 10 and Jake Leach and Derren Brooks 7 each to lead Akron.
Luey Castro took game high honors with 25 for Barker as Aidan Mescall added 11 and Logan Murrell 9.
Wilson 64, Roy-Hart 53
Building up a 36-17 lead at the half, Wilson went on to down visiting Roy-Hart 64-53.
Aidan Neumann scored 27 and Blake Martin 22 to lead the Lakemen.
Dan Aquilina scored 21 and Rem Albee 18 to pace the Rams.

Notre Dame girls down Lyndonville
Building up a 30-8 half-time advantage, Notre Dame went on to down visiting Lyndonville 53-27 in a Genesee Region League girls basketball game this evening.
Nina Bartz scored 14, Sofia Falleti 10 and Emma Fitch 9 to lead Notre Dame.
Ashlee Stephens scored 11 and Addison Dillenbeck 9 for Lyndonville which trailed 16-7 after the first quarter and 40-12 at the three-quarter mark.
Attica 24, Kendall 20
Points proved hard to come by for both teams as Attica trimmed visiting Kendall 24-20 in another G-R contest.
Kendall did pull to within two, 22-20, in the final minute and a half off a three by Stella Kwiatek but the Lady Eagles could not capitalize on several opportunities to pull even.
Attica finally put a lock on the win on a layup by Elise Dressel with five seconds to go.
Byron-Bergen wrestlers down Albion
Four pins and a technical fall win highlighted Byron-Bergen’s 56-12 victory over Albion in a non league wrestling match Thursday evening.
James Lamb (116), Brendin Galves (131), Solomon Smith (145) and JC Starowitz (170) all registered pins and Roman Smith had the technical fall for the Bees.
Mason Lynch (285) had a pin and Noah Marat (152) a decision win for Albion.
In another non league match, Wilson downed Lyndonvile 36-30.
Lyndonville will now host Pavilion/York in another non league match at 6 this evening.
Pembroke girls post win over Holley
Pulling away in the third quarter, Pembroke went on to defeat Holley 61-37 in a Genesee Region League girls basketball contest this evening.
Up 32-24 at the half, Pembroke outscored Holley 14-4 in the third period to open up a 46-28 advantage.
Elle Peterson scored 22, including six threes, Jayden Hootman 13 and Seneca Calderon 12 to lead Pembroke.
Samantha Bates scored 15 and Alivia Wolf 13 for Holley. Bates also had 7 steals.
Newfane, Wilson score N-O wins
Newfane downed Barker 49-30 and defending champion Wilson bested Akron 66-43 in Niagara-Orleans League girls basketball action.
Mallory Schultz scored 13 and Sienna Bowers 10 to lead Newfane while Kiera Dalton tallied 11 and Rachel Sutter 6 for Barker.
The Lady Panthers led 17-15 at the half and 33-25 after three quarters.
Wilson held a 35-26 lead at the half.
Holley and Kendall boys drop G-R contests
Holley and Kendall both dropped Genesee Region League boys basketball games this evening.
Attica defeated Holley 72-47 and Byron-Bergen downed Kendall 71-46.
Attica jumped out to a big 26-9 first quarter lead as Clayton Bezon scored 14 of his game high 26 points and Jordan Anderson all 10 of his.
The Blue Devils went on to lead by margins of 43-25 at the half and 61-39 after three quarters. Cole Harding scored 8 of his 17 points in the second quarter and Jack Janes 10 of his 12 in the third period.
Destin Kuyal scored 21 to lead Holley as Ben Cox added 11.
Up 17-10 after the first quarter and 31-22 at the half, Byron-Bergen broke the game wide open in the third period by outpointing Kendall 27-7 to race away to a 58-29 advantage.
Braedyn Chambry took game high honors for the Bees with 24.
Louie Conte scored 12 and Austin Werth 11 to pace Kendall.
Seahorses rally late to edge past Panthers

Photos by Cheryl Wertman – Caiden Class, who won both the 200 Free and 500 Free, also anchored the winning relay team in the decisive final event today as the Seahorses rallied late to nip visiting Newfane.
A 1-3 finish in the final event, earned Medina a narrow 77-74 come-from-behind win over visiting Newfane in a Niagara-Orleans League boys swim meet this afternoon.
Trailing 70-67, the Seahorses earned the decisive 10 points in the 400 Freestyle Relay to claim the victory on a first place finish by the quartet of Jackson Reese, Aidan Papaj, Jobi Wheeler and Caiden Class along with a third place finish by the foursome of Brandon Brueckner, Juan Velazquez, Hunter Walczak and Bradley Goyette.
Class was also an individual event double winner in the 200 Free and 500 Free.
Newfane, which took first place in 8 of the 11 events, got individual event double win efforts from Noah Kneeland (100 Free, 100 Backstroke) and Dylan Lamont (200 Individual Medley, 100 Breaststroke). Kneeland was also on two winning relays.
The Seahorses are now 1-2 and the Panthers 0-3.
Newfane did get a split on the day by downing Medina 99-52 in the girls meet.
The Lady Panthers had a pair of individual event double winners in Kimberly Schmitt (IM, Backstroke) and Lydia Lamont (Butterfly, Breaststroke). Both swimmers were also on two winning relays. Avery Stevenson, who won the 100 Free, was on all three winning relays.
Maya Anderson won the 200 Free and Madelynn Rutledge the 50 Free for Medina.
Newfane improves to 2-1 and Medina slips to 0-3.

Oakfield-Alabama girls down Kendall
Unable to rebound from a disastrous second quarter, Kendall dropped a 42-20 decision to visiting Oakfield-Alabama this evening in a Genesee Region League girls basketball game.
Trailing 5-1 after a very low scoring first quarter, Oakfield-Alabama rebounded to outscore Kendall 23-1 in the decisive second quarter and open up a commanding 24-6 half-time advantage. Caitlin Ryan scored 11 of her 14 points, Allison Williams 6 of her 8 and Alea Groff 4 of her 7 to key that rally for the Lady Hornets.
Oakfield-Alabama maintained a 37-13 lead after three quarters.
Stella Kwiatak led Kendall with 10.
Oakfield-Alabama is now 4-1 and Kendall 6-1.
Alexander 41, Lyndonville 31
Jumping out to a 22-9 half-time advantage, Alexander went on to defeat host Lyndonville 41-31 in a G-R contest.
Madison Boyce scored 15 and Hayden Bezon 9 to lead the way for Alexander.
Addison Dillenbeck scored 12 for Lyndonville as Bella Groves and Ashlee Stephens each added 6. Stephens also grabbed off 8 rebounds, Groves 7 and Dillenbeck 6.
Byron-Bergen 55, Holley 34
Byron-Bergen bested visiting Holley 55-34 in another G-R game as Janessa Amesbury led the way with 19 points.
Jailyn Bishop had 9 points and 7 rebounds and Alivia Wolf 7 points for Holley.
Pembroke 46, Attica 23
Leading by a narrow 15-13 margin at the half, Pembroke used a big 20-4 third period scoring edge to key a 46-23 G-R win over Attica.
Reagan Schneider scored 10 and Elle Peterson 9 to lead Pembroke’s balanced attack.
Medina wrestlers post win over Akron

Building up as much as a 30 point lead, Medina went on to down visiting Akron 39-28 in a Niagara-Orleans League wrestling match this evening.
The Mustangs opened up a 36-6 lead after first period pins by the trio of Sawyer Kingsbury (285), Reece Senske (108) and Luke Duffina (124) along with three forfeit wins.
Akron though made the finish exciting by taking four of the final five bouts on a pin by Jacob Beideck (145), a major decision win by Christian Klonowski (152) and two forfeits but the Tigers could get no closer than the final 11 point margin.
A decision win by Brennan Allen (160) closed out Medina’s win.
Medina and Akron are now both 1-1 in N-O action.
Roy-Hart/Barker 52, Albion 12
Pins by Lucas Kimber, Remington Marohn and Ronan Klug highlighted Roy-Hart/Barker’s 52-12 N-O win over visiting Albion.
Noah Harrison registered a pin for Albion.
Roy-Hart/Barker is now 1-1 and Albion 0-2 in N-O competition.

Mitchell signs to play football at U. of Akron

Photo by Cheryl Wertman – Medina High senior Roosevelt Mitchell today signed a letter of intent to accept a Division 1 football scholarship from the University of Akron. He is shown here at the signing with his parents Roosevelt Mitchell Jr. and ShantaAette Warren. Mitchell, a three year two-way lineman for the Mustangs, earned first team All-Western New York honors this past season and was a finalist for the Trench Trophy which is given to the top lineman in WNY. Akron competes in the Mid American Conference whose lineup also includes the University at Buffalo.
