Purple Eagles romp past Mustangs

Scoring in every inning but one Albion romped to a 19-2 win over Medina in a Niagara-Orleans League softball game at Vets Park this afternoon.

Cami London banged out a three-run homer, a two-run single and a double to lead the offense for Albion which also included a pair of hits by winning pitcher Alana Irvine, Kenzi Snook and Alison Gibson.

In the circle, Irvine scattered 5 hits and struck out 11.

Albion is now 2-1 and Medina 0-2 in N-O action.

Lady Bulldogs hurler stymies Lakewomen

A strong pitching performance sparked front-running Barker to a 4-2 win over Wilson in a Niagara-Orleans League softball gme this afternoon.

Peyton Bradley hurled a one hitter with 14 strikeouts as the Lady Bulldogs improve to 4-0 in N-O action.

Bradley and Arnie Sturtevant both had a pair of hits to lead the Lady Bulldogs at the plate.

Two runs in the fifth inning on a double by Anna Bowerman and a fielders choice play provided the margin of victory.

The loss drops Wilson to 2-2.

Roy-Hart 12, Newfane 3

In another N-O contest, Roy-Hart (2-0) bested Newfane (0-4) 12-3  as winning pitcher Abby Fox had a two-run single, Lila Brigham 2 hits and Kaitlin Mettler a run producing single.

In the circle, Fox had 5 strikeouts..

Notre Dame 14, Lyndonville 5
A late surge powered Notre Dame to a 14-5 win over host Lyndonville in a Genesee Region League softball game this afternoon.

Breaking away from a 5-5 tie, Notre Dame regained the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning on a three-run homer by Sophia Falletti.

Notre Dame then locked up the win by erupting for six runs in the seventh as Hannah Tenny had a two-run single.

Albion blanks Medina in N-O tennis

Albion stayed undefeated in Niagara-Orleans League tennis competition at 4-0 with a 5-0 victory at Medina this afternoon.

Leo Bolton and Mark Ames scored singles wins for the Purple Eagles which also got victories by the doubles teams of Jordan Marshall – Landon Graybill, Oliver Beach – Jason Anstey and Brayden Whittier – Lucy Rivers.

Medina is now 0-3.

In another N-O match, Wilson (3-2) downed Barker (1-3) 3-2.

Stadium lights will honor longtime R-H coach

Roy-Hart will pay a very  special tribute this evening to former longtime Rams football Coach Bruno Pacini who has passed away at the age of 101.

The lights of the Rams football stadium, which bears his name (“Bruno Pacini Field”), will be turned on from 7 to 10:30 in his honor.

“Thank you for being a Great Man,” said Roy-Hart Athletic Director John Gryzmala in paying  tribute to Pacini. “You influenced so many student-athletes  and our community! You will be missed. A Proud Ram! Our Forever Ram”

Pacini served the Roy-Hart district as a Social Studies teacher and head football coach for 28 years from 1950-78.

His football teams won seven Niagara-Orleans League championships during the 1953, 1954, 1957, 2967, 1969, 1971 and 1976 seasons.

In 2016 Pacini was honored by the school as he was one of the first honorees to be named to the Rams Wall of Fame.

Newfane sweeps Barker in N-O track meet

Newfane swept to a doubleheader victory over Barker in a Niagara-Orleans League track meet at Wilson this afternoon.

Newfane won the boys meet 96-45 as Ben Dickinson was a quadruple winner in the Long Jump, High Jump, Triple Jump and 400 and Liam Bettridge was a triple winner in the 800, 1600 and 3200.

The Lakemen and Bulldogs are now both 1-1.

The Newfane girls improved to 2-0 by downing Barker (0-2) 91-50 as Stephanie Chunco tripled in the 100, 200 and 400, Kylie Bowman in the 800, 1500 and 3000 and Bri Michalak in the Pole Vault, High Jump and Triple Jump.

Barker’s Jordan Kinne doubled in the 100 Hurdles and 400 Hurdles.

Wilson and Akron split
Wilson defeated Akron in the boys’ meet 100-41 as Jayden Ruble tripled in the 1600, 3200 and 400 Hurdles while Jake Austin doubled in the Triple Jump and High Jump and Aiden Neumann in the 100 and 200.

The Lakemen are now 1-1 and the Tigers 0-2.

The Akron girls improved to 2-0 by besting Wilson (1-1) 92-48 as Madigan Regan tripled in the 100, 200 and 400.

Wilson’s Marissa Schultz doubled in the Triple Jump and Pole Vault.

The Medina at Roy-Hart meet was postponed.

N-O Tennis
Akron downed Roy-Hart 3-2 in an N-O tennis match as Samantha Niescier and Cole Flemming scored singles wins and Aubri Baltzley and Whitley Koopman teamed up for a doubles victory.

Mustangs edge Lady Hawks in 8 innings

Medina pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to nip Holley 8-7 in a non league softball game at Vets Park this evening.

Molly Cook singled in the winning run in the eighth for the Mustangs.

Holley had rallied to tie the game at 7-7 by scoring four times in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch, a two-run triple by Teanna Church and an RBI single by Layne Walker.

Medina had built up the 7-3 lead by scoring in each of the first five innings.

The Mustangs scored once in the first on an RBI single by Lila Class, twice in the second on a wild pitch and an error, twice in the third on a two-run single by Taylor Frentz, once in the fourth on a single by Lorelei Sanders and once in the fifth as Eva Lacy tripled and came home on a double by Iyla Lilleby.

Medina next hosts Albion in a Niagara-Orleans League contest at 4:45 p.m. Friday.

In a Genesee Region League game Pembroke topped Kendall 10-3.

Jayden Bridge had 3 hits and Jarrett Lewter 2 to lead Pembroke to a 16-3 G-R win over Holley as Brayden Lang hurled a one hitter.

Salamanca stickmen down Medina

Jumping out to a 6-0 half-time advantage, Salamanca went on to down Medina 11-5 in a Class D Division lacrosse game at Vets Park this evening.

Medina did cut the deficit to 6-3 early in the third period after three power play goals by Will Prest but the Mustangs could get no closer.

Salamanca regained a 9-3 advantage at the end of the third period.

Prest and Dylan Lonnen rounded out Medina’s scoring with goals in the fourth quarter.

Medina is now 3-3 in the division and 4-3 overall.

Green finishes third at AAC championship

Melanie Green, who is a senior at the University of South Florida, finished in a tie for third place at the American Athletic Conference women’s golf championship tournament which concluded today at Brooksville, Florida.

Finishing three shots off the pace, Green, who is a Medina High graduate, posted a 6 under par total of 210 on rounds of 71-67-72.

One under after the opening round, Green had a big second round with six birdies and an eagle to more than offset three bogies for a 5 under par 67. At one stretch she had five birdies in a row from the second through the sixth holes.

Today she had three birdies and an eagle off setting five bogeys to finish with an even par round of 72.

Last year Green finished fourth at the AAC championship tournament.

USF also finished third in the final team standings.

Next up for Green will be the NCAA Regional tournament.

N-O trio earns All-State basketball honors

A trio of Niagara-Orleans League players have earned spots on the All-State boys basketball squads.

Barker senior Luey Castro has been named to the 9th team on the Class C squad.

Castro scored 355 points and grabbed off 200 rebounds this past season.

Two Newfane seniors have been named to the Class B squad. Landon Braman is a 7th team selection and Ben Dickinson an 11th team honoree.

Braman, who earned N-O Player of the Year honors, had 274 points, 105 assists and 91 rebounds. Dickinson had 284 points and 229 rebounds.

Albion Athletic Director receives state award

Albion High Athletic Director, Mariah LaSpina has been recognized with the 2024 New
York State Athletic Administrators Association (NYSAAA) Liam Frawley, Emerging Athletic Administrator Award.

LaSpina was formally recognized by Mickey Edwards, Superintendent of Albion Central Schools, during the April Board of Education meeting. He explained that she had been nominated by all Section VI athletic directors.

“Mariah has done an incredible job with our Athletic Program,” Edwards said. “She pushes our student athletes
to perform at their best both on and off the field. We are excited to see what the Spring season holds.”

The Liam Frawley, Emerging Athletic Administrator Award is earned by an athletic administrator who has been
an active member of NYSAAA for five or fewer years. They must be employed full-time as an athletic
administrator and their school must be a NYSPHSAA member school. The individual must show contributions
to community, local chapter, state, ongoing commitment to athletics, willingness to get involved, constant
professional development and continuing education, as well as striving towards their CAA or CMAA.
