Holley romps in girls U15 soccer contest

Improving to 4-0-1, Holley bested Greece United 6-1 in a Rochester District Youth Soccer League girls U15 Division game Monday evening.

Addie Crosier scored 3 goals to lead the Holley offense as Carsyn Mogle, Audrianna Lana and Veronica Flow each netted 1.

Albion to host soccer clinic, wrestling camp

The Albion Recreation Department will be hosting a free one day soccer clinic this Wednesday from 10 a.m. until noon at Bullard Park.

The clinic is for boys and girls ages 5 and up.

In addition, the Recreation Department will also be hosting a free wrestling camp at the Albion High gym on Monday July 7 through Friday July 11 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.

This camp is for students in grades 4 through 12 who are interested in developing their wrestling knowledge, skills and techniques. The Albion Central Wrestling Coaching staff will be the Directors along with college wrestlers and former high school standouts.

Students will be able to drill techniques, wrestle live and conclude each day with wrestling related games. Participants do not need any experience to attend this camp.

Inexperienced wrestlers will have an opportunity learn the basics skills in wrestling while the experienced wrestler will expand on what they already know.

There is no pre registration and no additional costs. Participants are required to wear gym shorts, t-shirt and sneakers. Please wear your wrestling sneakers if you own a pair

Green takes lead in the “Race for the Card”

Contributed Photo – At the end of each season the Epson Pro Golf Tour’s top 15 point getters receive an LPGA tour card for the following year. Now, just past the halfway point of the season, Medina’s Melanie Green has moved into the top spot in that key “Race for the Card” competition. Three weeks ago she was in 12th place. Two weeks ago she moved up to No. 4 after scoring her first Epson Tour tournament victory. Now she has moved into the top spot by a slender 1 point margin after finishing in a tie for 4th place at this past weekend’s Epson Tour tournament in Indiana. She will look to hold that spot when the Epson Tour competition resumes in Connecticut July 10-13.

Big second half keys win for Medina FC

Pullimg away in the second half, the Medina Mustangs FC defeated the Cheektowaga Stingrays 6-1 in a Buffalo District Soccer League 1st Division game Sunday evening at Buffalo State.

Breaking away from a 1-1 half-time deadlock, division leading Medina erupted for five unanswered goals in the second half to claim the win and improve to 7-0-1.

A goal by Greg Husung off an assist from Peter Martillotta ignited that uprising.

Thomas Goetze then scored from Ethan Leonard and Steven Anderson from Aiden Prince.

Martillotta capped off the uprising with a pair of goals, the second coming off an assist from Husung.

Prince also scored Medina’s lone first half goal off an assist from Husung which pulled the Mustangs into a 1-1 tie.

Medina next hosts Ukraine at 6 p.m. July 13 at Vets Park.

Avon tops Albion
Avenging an earlier season loss, Avon used a pair of first half goals to key a 2-0 win over host Albion in a Rochester District Youth Soccer League girls U19 Division game Sunday evening.

Albion is now 3-3.

Sizzling finish for Green at Epson Tourney

Catching fire on the back nine today, Medina’s Melanie Green rallied to earn a tie for fourth place at the Epson Pro Golf Tour’s Otter Creek Championship Tournament at Columbus, Indiana.

Green was 3 under par and tied for 17th heading into today’s final round. She was still just 3 under after the front nine as a birdie on No. 5 offset a bogey on No. 6.

However, Green exploded on the back nine registering a barrage of 6 birdies over the nine holes (on 10, 11, 13, 15, 16 and 18) for a blistering score of 30 to finish the day with a 6 under par round of 66.

That sensational back nine enabled her to finish the three day tournament with a 9 under par total of 207 good for a share of fourth place 5 shots back of the leader.

Green opened the tourney with a par round of 72 on Friday and improved to a 3 under par round of 69 on Saturday as four birdies (on 2, 9, 11 and 14) more than off set one bogey.

The top 10 finish was Green’s fifth of the season and came the week after she scored her milestone first Epson Tour tournament victory.

Her next event on the Epson Tournament will be in Connecticut on July 10-13.

Barre and Rotary to meet in 9u playoff final

It will be No. 2 seed Barre vs. No. 5 Rotary in the Albion Midget League 9U Division playoff championship game at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Midget League Field.

Barre downed No. 6 Vets and Rotary bested No. 1 Sandstone in the semifinals.

In the quarterfinals, Barre defeated No. 7 Elba 1, Rotary downed No. 4 Carlton, Sandstone bested No. 8 Holley and Vets topped No. 3 Elba 2.

U12 Division
Sandstone 15, Brockport 4
Sandstone downed Brockport 15-4 Saturday in a 12U Division regular season game.

Nikko Russo and Bryce Saxton both had 3 hits and Matt Colmero 2 for Sandstone which improves to 11-0.

The 12U Division will wrap up its regular season this coming week and then begin playoff competition on July 7.

Green advances to Epson Tourney final round

Posting a 3 under par round today, Medina’s Melanie Green has made the cut and advanced to Sunday’s final round of the Epson Pro Golf Tour’s Otter Creek Championship at Columbus, Indiana.

Green, who earned her milestone first Epson Tour tournament victory last weekend, opened with an even par round of 72 on Friday as 3 birdies offset a bogey and a double bogey.

She improved today with a 3 under par round of 69 for a two day today of 141 good for a share of 17th place and just one shot out of a share of 10th place. She had 4 birdies on holes 2, 9, 11 and 14 and one bogey on No. 12.

7 take part in recent Signing Day at Albion

Seven Albion High seniors recently took part in Signing Day to announce their scholastic and athletic plans for college.

Seth Krenning will attend Wooster Polytechnic Institute to play football and major in Engineering.

Luke Bell will attend Alfred State University to play football and major in Criminal Justice.

Alana Irvine will attend Monroe Community College to play softball and major in Health Science and Physical Wellness.

Cami London wil attend SUNY Oswego to play hockey and major in Childhood Education.

Julia Knight will attend Genesee Community College to play basketball. She has not decided on a major.

Willow Gaines will attend SUNY Oswego t oswim and major in Wellness and Health.

Adrian Figueroa-Fuentes will be attending college overseas as he will be playing soccer at Rome City Institute along with his brother.

All State softball honors for local trio

Photos by Cheryl Wertman – Lyndonville catcher Addison Dillenbeck and pitcher Arnie Sturtevant have both been named to the Class D All State softball squad,

Barker pitcher Madyson Flint has been named to the All-State Class C softball squad.

A trio of local players have earned spots on the All State softball squad.

Lyndonville’s battery of senior catcher Addison Dillenbeck and freshman pitcher Arnie Sturtevant have both been named to the Class D third team.

Barker freshman pitcher Madyson Flint has been named to the Class C fourth team.

Dillenbeck hit .586 with 5 doubles 11 triples, 2 home runs and 23 RBIs.

Sturtevant registered 104 strikeouts in the circle and had a 1.19 earned run average. At the plate she hit .469 with 12 doubles, 4 triples, 2 home runs and 25 RBIs.

Flint had 170 strikeouts and a 1.19 earned run average. At the plate, she hit .514 with 9 doubles, 1 triple and 26 RBIs.

In addition, both Flint and Roy-Hart junior pitcher Abby Fox have both been named to the All Western New York small schools first team while Akron sophomore pitcher Kenadee Jonathan has been named to the second team.

Albion senior pitcher Alana Irvine has been named to the All-WNY large schools second team. She had 105 strikeouts and a 2.37 era. At the plate she hit .515 with 6 doubles, 4 triples ,4 home runs and 16 RBIs.

Albion Rec. Dept. to sponsor tennis camps

The Village of Albion Recreation Department will be sponsoring two Tennis Camps this summer at the Albion High tennis courts.

The first camp will start this coming Monday, June 30th, at 10 a.m. and conclude at 12 p.m. each day through Thursday, July 3rd.

The second Tennis Camp will begin on Monday, July 7th at 10 a.m. and conclude at 12 p.m. each day, through Friday, July 11th.

Players do not need tennis experience to join this free summer event. Tennis balls will be provided. Players are encouraged to bring your own tennis racquet. However if a player does not have a racquet one may be provided.

There is no pre-registration for these camps. Walk up registration will be at the beginning of each session. An adult does not need to be at registration but encouraged.

Basic tennis skills will be taught to the beginners along with tennis drills and low level tennis competitive match situations. Scoring, rule and regulations will be taught along with tennis strategies.

Experienced tennis players will have an opportunity to drill and play matches throughout the two weeks.

This camp is for beginners to advanced tennis players of all ages.

The Tennis Camp will be postponed on any day related to bad weather.
