Dave Green, Shelridge head pro, looking healthy after successful surgery and now back at his desk, leaned back and said, “The season started out with a lot of annoying rainfall, but it now looks like we’re going full steam ahead.” He posted on his bulletin board the names of Melinda (Jello) Whiting and Sharon Zacher, the champions of last week end’s Member-Member Tourney for women.
The winning team shot 63 to triumph over Dawn Fox and Jeanne Whipple with 65. In the third spot were Mary Grabowski and Jean Lasch with 67.
The women’s association (SWGA) was busy helping the club in other ways than just on the competitive turf. An assortment of women under Beautification Committee Chmn. Val Peters teamed with male volunteers to make a major assault on weeds and growth in the formal part of the grounds and around the club house. “We call often on volunteers to keep Shelridge looking good and it works,” said President Matt Bush. “We may have a limited budget but we have pride. Thanks to everyone who weeded, trimmed and spread mulch.”
Bush thanked the following for donation of their time and tools “on a warm and humid day” — Char Smith, Pat Hermann, Jackie Harmon, Joe Brzezinski, Mary Grabowski, Paul Fox, Jack and Becky Fike, Rob and Tina Dennis, Mark and Carson Gates and Val Peters.
In more SWGA competition on the links, earning first place honors at the Three Girl Scrambles were Val Peters, Jeanne Whipple and Mary Grabowski with the threesome of Mary Jablonski, Kathryn Brooks and Tina Dennis finishing second.
The Fathers Day Sweeps saw Alex Misiti, Neal Hermann and Keegan Bradley take first place honors with the trio of Jerry Allen, Dave Stahl and Matthew Fitzpatrick finishing in the runner-up spot. Bruce Foley, Steve Barnes and Aaron Baddeley took third.
This past Sunday’s Sweeps saw Mike Fenzl, Ron Thomas, Gordy Herman and Butch Stupnick claim top honors. Finishing in the runner-up spot was the foursome of Mark Rydza, James Tee, Doug Beltz and Kyle Monti.
Last week’s Couples League competition saw the foursome of Frank and Tami Vekick and Bill and Jackie Bixler take low Gross score honors while the quartet of Dick Barry and Jackie Harmon and Rob and Tina Dennis posted the low Net score.
With the school year about to end the focus will swing to junior golf action as the Pee Wee crowd (ages 5 to 8) begins to get instruction and a little competition.
The bulletin board exhibits a new list of contenders in the season-long quest for the title of “Player of the Year”, an honor based on club participation.
