A winter weather advisory starts at 4 p.m. today and continues until 1 p.m. Wednesday for Orleans and Niagara counties, the National Weather Service in Buffalo said.

Lake effect snow is expected and dangerously cold wind chills are possible. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches is expected in the most persistent lake snows.

Winds could gust as high as 40 miles per hour and wind chills as low as 25 below zero also are possible.

The Weather Service says travel could be very difficult, and the hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. The cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 15 minutes.
