Western New York region will open on Tuesday, 4 days after Finger Lakes
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced today the Western New York can reopen for phase 1 on Tuesday.
Those five counties – Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany – weren’t able to reopen on Friday like the Finger Lakes and four other regions. (Orleans County is in the Finger Lakes region.)
Each region needs to meet seven criteria with hospitalizations from Covid-19, available hospital beds, testing capacity and tracing for people who may have been exposed to the virus, as well as other metrics.
Western New York had one remaining hurdle with tracing. The governor wants 30 tracers per 100,000 people. WNY needs 521 to meet the mark. Cuomo announced today the region will have 525 on Tuesday.
The governor also announced he wants the professional sports teams, including the Buffalo Bills, to begin planning to play games without fans. Those games can be televised in the short-term.
