Veteran laden Lady Eagles soccer squad prepping to begin state title defense
A year ago an underclassmen dominated Kendall girls soccer squad jelled in postseason play reeling off seven straight pressure victories to capture the school’s first state championship.
With that now veteran lineup returning virtually intact, the Lady Eagles are taking aim at earning Genesee Region League, Section V and state honors.
“Last year was a surprising season with the young team we had. They learned so much being in high pressure situations and being able to rise to the occasion at such an early age,” said Coach Pam Barchet. “Now our goal is to put out our best effort to repeat. We know we’ll have a target on our back especially with the entire team back and we don’t take anything for granted. Nothing will come easy but I think we’re up to the challenge and a tough G-R League will help get us ready for the postseason.”
The senior quartet of midfielder Hailee Mitchell, defender Lizzie Sutphen, goalie Katie Pearson and defender Olivia Reed head the Lady Eagles veteran squad which also includes juniors Madison Jacob (Midfield), Kari Harrier (Defender), Lizzy Woodams (Forward) and Brianna Wakefield (Midfielder) along with sophomores T’Mia Kitchings (Defender), Julie Coble (Defender), Grace Robinson (Midfield), Kiersten Rodas (Defender), Alezya Brown (Forward), Grace Levett (Midfield) and Kailie Regan (Forward/Goalie).
Mitchell led the team in scoring with 30 goals as Levett had 11, Brown and Wakefield 9 and Woodams 6.
Mitchell and Sutphen both earned first team Class D All-State honors while Jacob was second team and Wakefield 4th team. Mitchell was also named Class D Player of the Year and Barchet was named Coach of the Year.
Sutphen and Mitchell were also both G-R All-Stars as Wakefield, Levett, Kitchings and Pearson all earned Honorable Mention
