Unemployment up in Orleans compared to year ago

The unemployment rate in Orleans County for June was 5.6 percent, which increased from the 5.2 percent in June 2016, according to data from the New York State Department of Labor.

There were 16,800 people working in the county in June, which was down by 200 from the 17,000 the previous June.

The number of people unemployed increased from 900 to 1,000 in Orleans during the 12 months, according to the Department of Labor.

The 5.6 percent rate is topped by only five counties in the state: St. Lawrence, 6.9 percent; Allegany, 6.7 percent; Oswego, 6.1 percent; Bronx, 6.0 percent; and Chautauqua, 5.7 percent.

Columbia County has the lowest unemployment rate at 3.5 percent. Neighboring Genesee, with a 4.2 percent unemployment rate, is among the counties with the lowest rates.
