Two Medina High gridders earn WNY awards

Two Medina High players, senior running back Kyle Barna and junior quarterback Jason Hellwig, received major awards this evening at the 27th annual Western New York High School Football Awards Banquet.

Barna was named Class B North Co-Offensive Player of the Year while Hellwig was the co-recipient of the Jerry Butler Award which is given for performance, academics, leadership and sportsmanship.

Barna had 1,370 all purpose yards this season including 587 rushing and 523 receiving and scored a total of 13 touchdowns.

Hellwig, who became Medina’s career touchdown passing leader with 29, completed 83 of 153 passes for 1,158 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Both players earned first team B North Division All-Star honors this season. Barna was also a second team All-WNY selection and Hellwig received honorable mention.
