The Niagara-Orleans League boys soccer title race tightened up considerably this afternoon as defending champion Akron nipped front-running Medina/Lyndonville 1-0 at Akron.

The loss drops Medina/Lyndonville to 7-2 and slices the Mustangs’ N-O lead to just one game over a trio of tightly bunched teams including Akron (5-3), Newfane (6-3) and Wilson (6-3).

Bryan Witbeck scored the lone goal of the game for Akron with 10 minutes to go in the first half.

Medina/Lyndonville twice just missed netting the tying goal in the final 15 minutes of the second half as the ball bounced off the inside off the post and out on the first opportunity and then sailed just wide to the right of the net on the second chance.

Medina/Lyndonville next visits Newfane on Wednesday. The Mustangs will then host Akron in a rematch next Saturday.
