A quick two goal scoring burst midway through the first half sparked the surging Medina Mustangs FC to what proved to be a very important 6-1 win over the Clarence Coyotes in a Buffalo District Soccer League 2nd Division game Sunday evening at Vets Park.
The victory not only clinched a playoff spot for Medina but also vaulted the Mustangs into first place as former front-runner the United Warriors lost 3-2 to the Devils. Medina is now 6-2 on the season and the United Warriors 5-2-1.
Ethan Leonard scored on a direct kick and within a minute Nate Dillenbck followed up with a break away goal off an assist from Leonard to give Medina the 2-0 first half lead.
Tyler Ribbeck came up with a couple of clutch saves in goal to keep Clarence off the scoreboard in the opening half.
Victors of five in row now, the Mustangs then locked up the win with four goals in the second half including three by Dillenbeck and one by Greg Husung.
Trenton Jones, Kyan Mathiew and Aiden Prince all earned assists during that stretch.
Medina will next host third place Ukraine (4-1-3) on July 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Vets Park.
