Coat of Many Patches highlights life’s journey

Have you ever heard of Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors? Gosh I love Dolly, who doesn’t! Her coat was a Patchwork Coat her mom made for her when she was a young girl living in the Great Smoky Tennessee Mountains. My Coat of Many Patches doesn’t have the notoriety that Dolly’s coat does, but it was created with the same spirit as Dolly’s coat – a spirit of love.

Dolly’s Mom made her coat out of love for Dolly and I made mine out of love for myself. Boy I can’t believe I just said that, but I think it is OK to do something because you love yourself. We need to be kind to ourselves and have self gratitude.

This old jean coat I have was once a dull blue jean coat that I purchased on clearance many years ago. It hung in my closet for a long time because it was visually blah. It needed a purpose. So one day I skipped over to the discount store and bought some blue fabric dye and an idea began to grow in my heart and mind. I dyed it and decided it was going to be a little history of the things I love. Like a storyboard.

This is all very self indulgent, I know. But if you can not celebrate and appreciate your own existence, it sure will make it hard to appreciate anything. So the patch collection began. There are items related to music, frogs, good luck, Riinnggs, travel, cocktails, animals, peace & love, spiritual connections, and vanity, of course. Just recently I added the GRL PWR pink heart. Then began the buttons, next to the Positive Perks Button. My favorite is the one that reads “I can and I will.” This saying reminds me that as long as I have the will, desire and ability then I can and will.

You may think this concept of a Coat of Many Patches and buttons is too young for an almost 53-year-old Missus. But when you are celebrating your life for the whole world to see and be inspired by it, it motivates you to make it exciting. No one wants an unspirited coat that features only 2 or 3 patches. Each person is made up of many different and colorful patches and buttons. If you had a coat perhaps you would put an ice cream cone on it. Dang, I need one of those too! OK back to you. Perhaps you love the Buffalo Bills, art, reading, dancing or astronomy. I bet if you put your mind to it you will find that your coat would be pretty darn impressive. Might even make you realize how unique and cool you truly are and love yourself more than you did before!

Let you see all the things you could do and did, putting you on a path to do something new. Because who doesn’t want to have a lot of patches and buttons on their storied coat. There is a saying,“Be nice to yourself. It is hard to be happy when someone is being mean to you all the time.” #FACT on that saying and what a fun way to celebrate you then with a Coat of Patches and buttons. I would love to see your story walking down the street someday 🙂 What would be on your coat?
