Steelers oust Mustangs in double overtime
It took 104 minutes to decide as No. 6 seed Lackawanna nipped No. 3 Medina/Lyndonville 2-1 in double overtime in a Section VI Class B1 boys soccer quarterfinal game this afternoon at Vets Park.
The Steelers earned the win when Kamal Abdullah scored with 6:44 to go in the second 15 minute overtime period.
The Mustangs had grabbed a 1-0 lead when Dan Mandujano scored off a throw in by Evan Horn with 25:22 to go in the second half.
That slender lead held up until Ali Alomari scored his Western New York leading 44th goal of the season on a direct kick with 9:23 remaining to pull the Steelers even.
The Mustangs couldn’t capitalize on two big scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes missing on a header off a corner and a shot from straight away.
Then in the second half the Mustangs missed on a header off a corner and on a breakaway.
Zach Fike made several big saves in goal for the Mustangs including stopping a breakaway in the first half. He then had five key stops in the second half including two off Steeler corner opportunities. He also had a key sliding save in the first overtime and another save on a corner in the second OT.
The Mustangs finish the season at 14-3.
Lackawanna will now face No. 2 East Aurora in the semifinals. East Aurora downed No. 10 Albion 9-0.
In the Class B2 quarterfinals, No. 6 Newfane downed No. 3 Roy-Hart 3-1 and No. 2 Allegany-Limestone bested No. 10 Wilson 2-0.
Trevor Heschke scored the first two goals for Newfane and Jeremy Foltz the third.
Trent Choate scored for Roy-Hart in the contest which was tied 1-1 at the half.
