Lackawanna scored in the final half minute to nip visiting Medina/Lyndonville/Barker 28-26 this afternoon knocking the Mustangs out of the B2 Division title race.

Trailing 26-20, Lackawanna claimed the win by scoring with just 28 seconds remaining as quarterback Jeremiah Caviness passed 20 yards for a touchdown and also for the deciding two-point conversion.

The Mustangs had taken the 26-20 lead on a 12 yard touchdown run by William Braswell with just 1:51 remaining. A fumble recovery by Bobby Geiger at the Steelers 45 set up that opportunity.

Medina/Lyndonville/Barker also got off to a fast start jumping out to an early 12-0 lead on a 5 yard touchdown run by quarterback Izaiah Rhim with three minutes to go in the first quarter and a 5 yard TD run by Braswell four minutes into the second period.

A fumble recovery by Chaise Prest set up the first score and an 80 yard interception return by Brian Fry set up the second. Fry also had another interception late in the third quarter and Tyler Chinn one to end the first half.

The Mustangs increased the lead to 20-6 at the half as Rhim hooked up with Chinn for a 30 yard touchdown pass with just 49 seconds to go as Braswell added the two-point conversion.

However, Lackawanna battled back to knot the contest at 20-20 with a 10 yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter an a 4 yard TD run with 5:33 to go in the fourth.

The loss drops the Mustangs to 2-2 in the division and 3-3 heading into next Friday’s B2 finale against undefeated (4-0, 6-0) rival Albon at Vets Park.

Lackawanna improves to 3-1 in the division. The Steelers can earn a share of the B2 title with a victory over Olean (3-1) next weekend and a Mustangs win over Albion.
