Press Release, NY State Police

The New York State Police announced that individuals who registered an assault weapon under the SAFE Act can now recertify their registration as required under state law. The State Police have created an easy online process that will allow registrants to quickly complete their recertification. More information can be found by clicking here.

There is no cost for recertification, and those who do not wish to use the online process can download and print a form from the above link, or pick up a paper form from any State Police station.

State law requires that assault weapon registrations must be recertified every five years from the date the registration was filed. Under NYS Penal Law Section 400, failure to recertify will result in a revocation of the registration.

As part of the recertification process, licensees must affirm that they are not prohibited from possessing firearms under state and federal law, and must also confirm certain personal information.

Individuals who have questions about the process can call 1-855-LAWGUNS (1-855-529-4867).
