Spotlighting local college athletes
The collegiate winter sports season is now underway and a good number of local athletes are competing, some of whom are listed here.
In women’s basketball, the Finger Lakes Community College roster includes sophomore Alyssa Thompson from Barker, Georgia Luft from Elba and Makayla Pocock from Byron-Bergen. Jensen McGhee from Newfane is a freshman member of the Niagara County Community College squad and Brianna Smith from Oakfield-Alabama is a sophomore member of the Buffalo State College squad.
In men’s basketball, Holley grad Broek Ostrom is a freshman member of the St. Bonaventure University team.
In women’s swimming Albion has a quartet of grads on the Genesee Community College team including sophomores Paige Derisley, Michaela Pantano and Rylee Pearles and freshman Quinn McCue. The GCC squad also includes Emma Corbett, a freshman from Akron along with sophomores Alaura Rehwaldt from Byron-Bergen and Jordyn Stachowiak from Attica and freshman Ruth Metzger from Attica. Medina’s Hannah Heil is a sophomore on the Buffalo State team while Roy-Hart’s Kayla Hagen and Akron’s Mindy Doktor are both juniors on the Fredonia State squad.
In men’s swimming, Roy-Hart’s Jacob Hagen and Newfane’s Ethan Niver are both freshman on the SUNY Brockport team while Barker’s Casey Webb is a senior on the Roberts Wesleyan University team.
In wrestling, Lyndonville grad Sam Recco is the head coach and Holley grad Mike Silvis the assistant coach of the SUNY Brockport wrestling team.
