Mustangs will host a familiar foe in the Section VI Class C quarterfinals on Thursday

In a rematch of last year’s playoff opener, Medina will host Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove in the quarterfinal round of the Section VI Class C football playoffs at 7 p.m. Thursday at Vets Park.

The Mustangs, which bring a 7-1 record into the sectionals, posted a 24-0 win in last fall’s quarterfinal at Vets Park over the Golden Falcons which are 6-2.

Medina’s offense has been spearheaded by Christian Moss who has rushed for 1,641 yards and 22 touchdowns. Jayzon Wills has rushed for 378 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Mustangs quarterback Preston Woodworth has passed for 781 yards and 8 touchdowns. Carter Woodworth has caught 12 passes for 155 yards and 4 touchdowns and Jerrell Nealy 11 for 192 and 3 TDs.

On defense for the Mustangs, Brody Fry has led the way with 113 tackles including 74 solo along with 2 sacks and an interception. Carter Woodworth has 38 tackles and an interception and Colton Fletcher 37 tackles, 4 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries.

For Falconer/CV/MG, quarterback Jacob Roth has passed for 411 yards and 6 touchdowns and rushed for 537 yards and 6 TDs. The Golden Falcons have also had Taylor Jones with 342 yards rushing and 5 TDs, Charlie Reichenbach 265 yards and 5 TDs and Mathis Baehr 223 yards and 4 TDs.

The victor will advance to the semifinals against the winner of Friday’s quarterfinal between undefeated defending Class C champion Salamanca (8-0) vs. Cleveland Hill (4-4). Salamanca downed Medina 36-23 in the Class C title contest last fall.

Friday’s other lass C quarterfinals will have Portville at Newfane and Alden at Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton.

Lady Eagles win Class C2 semifinal thriller

All of the scoring came in a wild sea-saw second half as top seeded Kendall trimmed No. 5 Caledonia-Mumford 3-2 in the semifinals of the Section V Class C2 girls soccer tournament this evening at East Rochester.

Cal-Mum ignited what turned out to be a burst of 5 goals in a span of just 14, minutes when Ava Amorese tallied at the 28 minute mark of the second half to snap a scoreless deadlock.

However, Kendall answered right back with the equalizer a minute later as Alea Barrett scored on a rebound off an initial shot by Ava Quintern as a direct kick by Sophia Picardo started the play and the sea-saw battle was on.

Cal-Mum regained a 2-1 lead three minutes later on a goal by McKenna Watson but again Kendall answered right back with the equalizer five minutes later on a goal by Quintern reknotting the contest at 2-2.

Keeping the momentum, Kendall finally took the lead for the first time at 3-2 as Ryleigh Denning scored what proved to be the game winner five minutes later off a corner by Picardo with 14:47 remaining.

Kendall goalie Brooke Rodas then preserved the lead and the victory with a big save in the final four minutes.

Improving to 18-1, Kendall will now face Genesee Region League foe Byron-Bergen in the C2 championship game at 7:45 p.m. Friday at Gates-Chili.

Byron-Bergen, which handed Kendall its only loss during the regular season by a narrow 2-1 margin, downed Genesee Valley-Belfast 6-1 in the other semifinal.

Williamson nips Holley in C1 semifinal

A goal just before halftime proved to be the only score as top seeded Williamson nipped No. 5 Holley 1-0 in the semifinals of the Section V Class C1 girls soccer tournament this evening at East Rochester.

Williamson’s goal by Kendall Fernaays came off a corner kick with just 36 seconds remaining in the opening half.

Holley came battling back over the final 12 minutes but first had a shot from straight away bounce off a Williamson defender. The Lady Hawks were then unable to capitalize on two late corner kick opportunities.

Holley goalie Jayda Shampine made two big saves earlier in the second half to keep it a 1-0 game. She first stopped a shot on a Williamson breakaway opportunity and then stopped a shot on a direct kick.

Holley finishes the season at 13-5-1 while Williamson advances to Friday’s C1 final with a 16-3 record.

Medina and Roy-Hart score wins in Section VI Class C field hockey quarterfinals

Medina and Roy-Hart both scored wins in a Section VI Class C field hockey quarterfinal round doubleheader at Vets Park today.

First, No. 3 Roy-Hart downed No. 6 Newfane 4-0 on goals by Savannah Newton, Brooke Zglinicki, Adella Dukes and Violette Streckwald.

Then No. 4 Medina topped No. 5 Wilson 3-1 on 2 goals by Penelope Schalck and 1 by Emi Batista.

In the day’s other quarterfinal No. 7 Eden upset No. 2 Barker 2-1 at Barker.

Eden scored the game winning goal in the fourth quarter after Barker had tied the game in the third period on a tally by Madilyn Detschner.

Friday’s semifinals will now have Medina vs. top seeded Akron at 5 p.m.at Alden and Roy-Hart vs. Eden at 6 p.m.  at Vets Park.

Lady Tiger spikers win sectional opener

An overtime win in the opening set sparked No. 8 Lyndonville to a 26-24, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21 victory over No. 9 Hammondsport in the opening round of the Section V Class D2 volleyball tournament this evening at Pavilion.

The Lady Tigers now advance to a quarterfinal match at top seeded Avoca-Prattburgh on Friday.

Leading the way for Lyndonville were Leah Kenyon with 1 dig, 2 blocks, Hannah Fox with 1 ace, 2 kills, 10 assists, and 2 digs. Alyssa Prine with 2 aces, 3 digs. Addie Dillenbeck with 6 kills, 4 digs. Emily Dill with 1 ace, 1 assist. Madi Davis with 1 ace, 3 kills, 2 digs. Hannah Marker with 1 kill. Olivia Belgiorno with 1 ace, 2 digs.

In Class D1, No. 8 Bradford-Dundee downed No. 9 Kendall in three sets and in Class C1 No. 3 HAC bested No. 14 Holley in three sets.

Mustangs score Class B2 soccer semifinal win

A goal early in each half keyed No. 2 seed Medina to a 2-0 victory over No. 3 Falconer/Cassadaga Valley this evening in the semifinals of the Section VI Class B2 boys soccer playoffs.

Cole Callard scored what proved to be the game winning goal on a direct kick just 5 minutes into the first half. It was his 43rd of the season.

Aleks Seefeldt later added a big insurance goal on a reound shot just 25 seconds into the second half off an initial shot by Callard. It was his 13th of the season.

Brady Christiaansen earned the shutout in goal for the Mustangs.

Improving to 15-2-1, Medina will now play in the Class B2 championship game at 5 p.m. Friday at West Seneca West High School against the winner of the No. 1 Southwestern vs. No. 5 Akron semifinal.

Roy-Hart rolls in volleyball sectional opener

No. 3 seed Roy-Hart scored a straight set 25-9, 25-9, 25-19 victory over visiting No. 14 Salamanca this evening in the opening round of the Section VI Class C volleyball playoffs.

Emily Livergood had 7 spiking kills and Raegan Kern and Grave Pearl 6 each for Roy-Hart.

Ella Martillotta had 4 service aces for the Lady Rams as Kern and Pearl each had 3. Martillotta also had 23 assists.

Roy-Hart will next host No. 6 Falconer in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Falconer downed No. 11 Allegany-Limestone in 3 sets.

Class B1
Springville downs Albion
No. 8 Springville bested visiting No. 9 Albion 25-5, 25-13, 25-13 in the opening round of the Section VI Class B1 playoffs this evening.

Taylor LeFrois had 3 kills for Albion as Alya Villaneuva had 27 digs and Madison LeBaron 19 digs.

Volleyball sectional playoffs set to begin

Holley, Kendall and Lyndonville will all have matches on the road when the Section V volleyball playoffs get underway on Tuesday.

In Class C 1, No. 14 seed Holley will visit No. 3 HAC at 5 p.m.

In Class D1, No. 9 Kendall will take on No. 8 Dundee-Bradford at 6 p.m. at Bloomfield. The winner will visit No. 1 York on Friday.

In Class D2, No. 8 Lyndonville will face No. 9 Hammondsport at 5 p.m. at Pavilion. The winner will take on No. 1 Avoca-Prattsburg on Friday.

Section VI volleyball playoff competition gets underway this evening at 6 p.m.

No. 3 Roy-Hart will host No. 14 Salamanca and No. 5 Wilson will host Cattaraugus/Little Valley in Class C;  No. 9 Albion will visit No. 8 Springville in Class B1; No. 9 Akron will visit No. 8 Cleveland Hill and No. 6 Newfane will travel to No. 3 Olmsted in Class B2..

Green has very successful pro golf debut

Making a sparkling professional debut, Medina’s Melanie Green placed second recently at the 25th Maryland Women’s Open Golf Tournament.

Finishing two shots back of the leader, Green posted a two over par total of 146 on rounds of 72 and 74 at the tourney  which was held at the Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland. The tourney is not part of the LPGA tour schedule.

Green now will be looking to earn her coveted LPGA Tour Card when she competes in the LPGA’s Q-Series Final Stage Tournament which will be held December 5-9 at Mobile, Alabama.

In between, Green is looking to compete in a couple of NXXT Women’s Pro Golf Tour events in November. The NXXT tour has a partnership with the Epson Tour, which is the official qualifying tour of the LPGA.

Mustangs will host Section VI Class C football quarterfinal Thursday

Postseason football competition will get underway Thursday as Medina hosts Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove at 7 p.m. at Vets Park in the quarterfinal round of the Section VI Class C playoffs.

The matchup will be a repeat of last year’s quarterfinal which saw Medina down Falconer/CV/MG 24-0 at Vets Park.

Medina is the No.2 seed from the C North Division while Falconer/CV/MG is the No. 3 seed from the C South Division.

Medina finished the regular season in a three-way tie for the Mustangs fifth straight C North championship with Newfane and Alden all at 6-1. Alden earned a one-third share of the title by defeating Cleveland Hill 43-28 on Friday.

Newfane earned the C North’s No. 1 seed by virtue of having the most power points in contests involving the three tri champions. Alden is the No. 3 seed and Cleveland Hill the No. 4 seed.

The C South Division’s other seeds are No. 1 Salamanca, No. 2 Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton and No. 4 Portville.

The other three quarterfinal matchups, which will be played on Friday, has Cleveland Hill at Salamanca, Alden at Chautauqua Lake/W/B and Portville at Newfane.

Salamanca is the defending Class C champion having defeated Medina 36-23 in the title game last fall at Highmark Stadium.

The Class C Funke Memorial consolation semifinal will have Roy-Hart/Barker at Southwestern at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Albion Beginners Division team captures title

The Albion youth football Beginners Division team edged Batavia 7-0 Saturday in the Niagara Orleans Football Association (NOFA) playoff championship game held at Albion.

Hudson Palmer’s 21 yard touchdown run and extra point conversion in the 4th quarter provided the only score of the game in a great defensive battle.

Palmer finished with 38 yards rushing, Kenny Almonte with 36 yards, Elijah Cornick 7 and Gunner Jackson 6 yards.

Xavier Weis, Cornick and Palmer each had 5 tackles. Arlen Beecher, Patrick Westlund and Almonte each had 4 tackles and a fumble recovery. Jai’heem Drisdom had 2 tackles. Jaxon Francis had a tackle and forced a fumble.

Albion finishes the season 9-0.

Mini Division
LeRoy 19, Albion 14

Jayce Torres finished the day with 154 yards and 2 touchdown runs of 13 and 60 yards. Cayden Farrell finished with 10 yards rushing, 34 yards passing and 2 PAT’s. Greyson Roberts had 22 receiving and Elian Almonte 12 receiving.

Kyle Schomske and Harrison Froman led the Mini Eagles defense with 12 tackles each. Kairo Bennett was in on 11 tackles, Torres 10, Jai’Kaih Drisdom 9, Moses Taylor 6, Farrell 5, Almonte 5, Elijah Warren 4, Roberts 2, Parker Gardner and Zacery Rice 1 each.

Albion finishes the season 9-1.

JV Division
Albion falls to Leroy.

Camden Holt had the lone score for the JV Eagles. Jace DiMatteo  passed to Lincoln Voorhees for the PAT. Heyden Almonte finished with 63 yards rushing. Carter Farrell 40 yards. Jace DiMatteo had 55 yards passing. Almonte had 18 receiving, Holt 15, Voorhees 11 yards and Olles 10.

Colton Moreland led the defense with 8 tackles. Holt 7, Farrell, Liam Pearl and Roman Allport 4 each. Almonte, Olles and Landon Farrell 3 each. Parker McDaniel, Hank Aina, Gavin O’Brocta, Liam Saporito, DiMatteo,Mason Rotthoff and Kolton Berry were each in on tackles.

Medina will host B2 soccer semifinal Monday

No 2 seed Medina will host No. 3 Cassadaga Valley/Falconer in the semifinals of the Section VI Class B2 boys soccer playoffs at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Vets Park.

Medina brings a 14-2-1 record into the semis while Cassadaga Valley/Falconer is 7-8-2

Monday’s other B2 semi will have No. 5 Akron at No. 1 Southwestern at 7 p.m.

The B2 championship game will be at 5 p.m. Friday at West Seneca West.

In the Class C semifinals on Wednesday, No. 1 seed Wilson will host No. 4 Randolph at 6 p.m. and No. 6 Westfield/Brocton will visit No. 2 Allegany-Limestone at 7:30 p.m.

The Class C finals are scheduled for November 4 at West Seneca West.

Lady Hawks, Lady Eagles in semis Tuesday

The Holley and Kendall girls soccer teams will be involved in a Section V semifinal playoff doubleheader on Tuesday at East Rochester.

No. 4 seed Holley will face top seeded Williamson in a Class C 1 semi at 5:30 p.m.

No. 1 seed Kendall will then take on No. 5 Caledonia-Mumford in a Class C2 semi at 7:30 p.m.

Top seeded Kendall advances in C2 sectionals

Getting goal production from five players, top seeded Kendall posted a 7-1 victory over No. 8 Gananda in the quarterfinal round of the Section V Class C2 boys soccer playoffs this afternoon at Kendall.

Pablo Rosario-Reyes scored 3 goals to lead the Kendall attack as Brenden Eichas, Brandon Barrett, William Kludt and Andrew Cole each netted 1. Barrett and Tyler McCue both had 2 assists

Kendall jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as Eichas scored at the 26 minute mark of the first half and Rosario-Reyes followed up with a goal just two minutes later.

Gananda did briefly cut the deficit to 2-1 with a penalty kick goal but Kendall got that one back with interest before the half ended.

Barrett and Rosario-Reyes answered with goals over the final six minutes to put the Eagles in command by a 4-1 margin at the half.

Second half goals by Rosario-Reyes, Kludt and Cole then closed out the victory for the Eagles.

Improving to 15-1-1, Kendall will next face No. 5 Campbell-Savona game in the semifinals on Wednesday. Campbell-Savona downed No. 4 Perry 2-0.

Williamson ousts Holley in C1 sectionals

Scoring twice in each half, No. 5 Williamson blanked No. 4 Holley 4-0 in a Section V Class C1 quarterfinal round boys soccer playoff game this evening at Holley.

Williamson scored two quick goals in the first 13 minutes of the opening half to move on top to stay.

The Marauders then locked up the victory with two more goals in the second half the first coming on a direct kick.

Holley finishes the season at 12-4-2.

Green advances at LPGA-Q Series

Moving one big step closer to earning her LPGA Tour Card, Medina’s Melanie Green finished one shot back at the LPGA Q-Series Qualifying Stage Tournament this past week in Venice, Florida.

Green finished the four day event with a 275 total after rounds of 71-68-70-66.

She had 6 birdies and no bogies on her final round of 6 under par 66 which vaulted her from 9th place to the runner-up spot.

The top 35 finishers now qualify for the Q-Series Final Stage Tournament which will be held December 5-9 at Mobile, Alabama.

Players now have until November 15 to declare that they are turning professional in order to be able to compete in the Final Stage Tournament.

Green graduated from the University of South Florida this past spring where she was a multi year All-Conference and All American honoree.
