Sound bite morality shouldn’t dictate abortion policy

According to the CDC only about 1 percent of abortions occur after 24 weeks. There are several reasons women may need an abortion at this time, including maternal health or fetal abnormalities.

These may include pre-mature rupture of the membrane, pre-eclampsia or placental abruption and many other conditions. These conditions can cause severe blood loss and septic shock. Doctors and nurses who perform these procedures are specially trained in ethical decision making in difficult complex circumstances. We can not know the circumstances of other people.

It is callous and simplistic to try and shame medical conditions with bumper sticker slogans and sound bite morality.
