Section VI football schedule has problems for Medina including no Albion rivalry game
It is not quite complete but a version of the Section VI Football Federation 2025 schedule has been released.
The schedule is incomplete as it does not list a game for Medina for week 8 and it will not include the traditional Medina vs. Albion rivalry game.
Since Medina’s decision to return to 11 man football, instead of switching to 8 man, came after work on the Section VI schedule had been started a couple of problems arose for schedule makers.
First, Medina’s return combined with the return of JFK after a year’s absence due to low numbers, gives the C North Division 9 teams instead of 8 as it previously had. Therefore, each team will now not be playing all of its C North opponents. In Medina’s case the Mustangs will not be playing Akron and Maritime.
Second, since the schedule was pretty much set there was no way to include the traditional Medina vs. Albion rivalry game. The schedule already had Albion facing its B 2 Division foe Maryvale in week 8 which has traditionally been “Rivalry Weekend”.
“Trying to put the Medina-Albion game back in would have meant reworking the entire B and C divisions schedule and they did not want to open that can of worms,” said Medina Athletic Director and varsity Football Coach Eric Valley who added “The administration from both Medina and Albion reached out to Section 6 in hopes that they could re-work the schedule to include the rivalry game.”
He noted that schedule makers are now looking at Batavia as a possible opponent for Medina for week 8.
Right now Medina, Albion and Barker/Roy-Hart are all scheduled to open the season on the road on September 5. The Mustangs would be at Silver Creek, the Purple Eagles at Lew-Port and Barker/Roy-Hart at Newfane.
The Mustangs home opener would be on Thursday September 18 against Barker/Roy-Hart. The Purple Eagles home opener would be on Friday September 19 against Lackawanna.
