Sandstone, Actives advance to Albion Midget League playoff final

Top seeded Sandstone defeated No. 4 Barre 9-1 and No. 3 Actives downed No. 2 Vets 5-1 in the semifinals Thursday evening to advance to the Albion Midget League playoff championship game at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Midget League Field.

In Tuesday’s quarterfinal round, Sandstone defeated No. 8 Holley 12-2, Actives edged past No. 6 Carlton 6-5 in extra innings, Barre trimmed No. 5 Rotary 3-1 and Vets bested No. 7 St. Mary’s 10-2.

Sandstone’s offense in the semifinal win over Barre was led by two hits each by Isaiah Callicutt, Rylend Callicutt, Bailey Blanchard, Mike DiCureia and Patrick Ricker. Callicutt and Blanchard both had triples and DiCureia drove in four runs. On the mound, Vincent Zona hurled a one hitter with 13 strikeouts.

Dylan Fox pitched six innings with six strikeouts for Actives in the semifinals. At the plate, Dave Albanese had three hits and drove in two runs and Fox had an RBI double.

Two home runs by Rylend Callicutt and one each by Ricker and Isaiah Callicutt highlighted Sandstone’s quarterfinal win over Holley. Rylend Callicutt had a total of four hits as DiCureia, Zona and Ricker each had three an Isaiah Callicutt two.

Actives earned its narrow quarterfinal round win on an RBI double by Albanese in the bottom of the seventh inning. Albanese had a total of these hits and Amari Jones two, including an RBI triple.
