Roy-Hart grad in Sweden to compete in Spartan Ultra Race World Championships

The Buffalo Sabres are not the only area athletes competing in Sweden this week as Gasport native and Roy-Hart graduate Aaron Berner is in Are, Sweden  to compete in the Spartan Ultra Race World Championships which will be held on Saturday.

The 50 kilometer race (approximately 31 miles) includes five loops up and down a 2,000 foot mountain with some 20 to 25 obstacles per lap.

Berner, 39, who has been competing in the Spartan races for a number of years, was selected to compete in the World Championship race based on his high finish in another Ultra race.

Berner is a 1998 Roy-Hart graduate and a 2000 Alfred State grad. He was a member of the Roy-Hart cross-country and track teams and was on Alfred State’s cross country team in 1998.

He resides in Lockport with his wife Jenny and children Jacob and Owen who also compete in Spartan kids races. The entire family is in Sweden for this grueling race.

The Sabres are in Sweden for two games this weekend against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
