Rochester man confirmed as identity of man found Sunday in Lake Ontario

CARLTON –  The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office was able to confirm the identity of the man found Sunday morning in Lake Ontario, about 3 miles north of Point Breeze.

Serhiy F. Smyk, 32, of Rochester reportedly went fishing with friends in Niagara River Gorge on June 21. They reportedly stayed in the gorge overnight. Friends reported him missing to the New York State Park Police-Niagara Region on the morning of June 22, said Undersheriff Chris Bourke.

The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office stated “cause of death” is pending the toxicology results. The Orleans County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Park Police-Niagara will continue the investigation into this incident.
