A narrow victor in triple overtime in the quarterfinals, Lyndonville junior Tony Recco dropped an equally close overtime decision this morning in the semifinal round of the state wrestling championships being held at the Times Union Center in Albany.

In a 113 lb. weight class clash of former state champions, Recco dropped a narrow 2-0 overtime decision to Derek Spann of Adirondack (Section III).

The semifinal match was scoreless after the three regulation two minute periods. Spann finally broke that deadlock when he scored a takedown over Recco with just 22 seconds remaining in the overtime period to advance to this evening’s championship match.

“It was a hard match. Tony really wrestled tough,” said Lyndonville Coach Jeff Gress. “In the overtime he took a shot, the other kid countered and the kid got the points. It was a tough grind.”

Recco, who is now 46-4 on the season, will be in the match for third and fourth place later this afternoon.

Recco advanced to the semifinals with a first period pin in the opening round and a 2-1 triple overtime decision win in the qarterfinals.

Recco captured a state title as a freshman in 2012 but was unable to compete in the Section V state qualifier or the states last year due to a knee injury. He qualified for a return trip to the states by winning a Section V title two weeks ago.
