Quakers top Mustangs to close regular season

Pulling away down the stretch, Orchard Park defeated visiting Medina 70-53 this afternoon in a regular season ending non league boys basketball game.

Leading by a narrow 50-48 margin at the three-quarter mark, the Quakers outscored the turnover plagued Mustangs 20-5 in the final period to lock up the win.

The contest was deadlocked at 16-16 at the end of the first period and Medina grabbled a slender 31-30 lead at the half.

Jalin Cooper had 25 and Izaiah Rhim 16 to lead Medina as Alex Allis and Tyler Chinn both had 6 and Trenton Jones 2.  Cooper scored 11 in the first period and 4 in the second while Rhim had 6 in the second and 8 in the third.

Medina, which is seeded No. 3 for the upcoming Section VI Class B1 playoffs, will host a quarterfinal round game on Friday. The Mustangs finish the regular season at 10-10 overall.

Pairings for Niagara-Orleans League teams in the upcoming Section VI Class B1 playoffs will have Medina seeded No. 3, Newfane No. 4 and Albion No. 10.  As top four seeds, Medina and Newfane both draw a double bye and will begin playoff action by hosting a quarterfinal game on Friday. Albion will host No. 15 I Prep at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday in a first round contest..

In Class B2 the N-O will have Wilson seeded No. 5, Roy-Hart No. 9 and Akron No. 15. Wilson will host the winner of Tuesday’s No. 13 Eden vs. No. 12 Riverside game on Wednesday. Roy-Hart will host No. 16 DaVinci and Akron will visit No. 10 Southwestern in opening round games on Tuesday.
