Purple Eagles trim Blue Devils in B1 playoffs

No. 9 seed Albion edged past host No. 8 East Aurora  in the opening round of the Section VI Class B1 baseball playoffs this afternoon.

Breaking away from a 1-1 deadlock, Albion regained the lead for good by scoring twice in the fifth inning on RBI doubles by Liam Ward and Thomas Furmanski. A single by Ryan Krenning and a bunt single by Vinnie Zona sparked that uprising.

East Aurora cut the deficit to 3-2 with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth but Albion got that one right back in the sixth on a double by Michael Harling which scored Michael DiCureia who reached on a double.

Zona pitched the first four and two-third innings giving up 2 hits and striking out 4.  Furmanski hurled the final two and one-third innings allowing 1 hit with 5 strikeouts.

Furmaski also drove in the Purple Eagles first run of the afternoon with a double in the first inning.

Albion next visits top seeded Springville in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Friday.

Wilson 7, JFK 0

Wilson shutout JFK  7-0 in a Class B2 contest as Ian Evans hurled a 3 hitter with 8 strikeouts and Thomas Baia had 3 hits and drove in 4 runs.

Notre Dame outlasted Kendall 3-2 in 11 innings and Byron-Bergen downed Holley 4-1 in Genesee Region League season finales.
