Purple Eagles nip Mustangs in overtime
When Albion and Medina/Lyndonville have met in girls soccer competition this season overtime has been the rule and this evening’s sectional contest at Albion was no exception.
A lone goal late in the first of the two 10 minute overtime periods proved to be all of the scoring as Albion nipped Medina/Lyndonville 1-0 in the pre quarterfinals of the Section VI Class B1 playoffs.
Elisabeth Baker scored the Purple Eagles lone goal on a penalty kick with 2:22 remaining in the first overtime.
Both teams just missed on good scoring opportunities during regulation time.
Medina/Lyndonville had a goal disallowed on an offsides call in the final 20 seconds of the first half. Albion then just missed on a great scoring opportunity in the final seconds of the second half as Mustangs goalie Kaya Bloom made a diving save.
Sydney Mulka earned the shutout in goal for Albion.
“Especially in the second half we started passing the ball very well and there was a lot of good teamwork,” said Albion Coach Maggie Orbaker. “They never gave up and that has been the theme of the season.”
Improving to 9-6-2, Albion will next visit top seeded City Honors in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Medina/Lyndonville finishes the season at 5-11-1.
