Purple Eagles edge past Lakemen

Albion trimmed visiting Wilson 8-5 this afternoon to grab a narrow lead in the Niagara-Orleans League baseball title race.

Albion improves to 7-1 and moves a half game ahead of 6-1 Roy-Hart.

Breaking away from a 5-5 deadlock, Albion regained the lead for good by scoring once in the bottom of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Vincent Zona.

The Purple Eagles then added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Brady Meakin and a double steal. Randy Eblacker also had a key hit in the frame.

Wilson had tied the game at 5-5 by scoring twice in the fourth on a two-run single by Brayden Skobjak and once in the fifth on a sacrifice by Jackson Rotella.

Earlier the Lakemen jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a double by John Bender and a single by Rotella.

Albion answered back with five runs in the second inning on a two-run double by Jason Downs, a two-run single by Meakin and an RBI single by Evan Pappalardo. Singles by Kyle Smith and Liam Ward ignited the rally.

Downs had a total of 3 hits and Meakin and Pappalardo 2 each.

The loss drops Wilson to 3-4.

Albion next hosts Medina at 4:45 p.m. Friday.
