Purple Eagles edge Lancers to stay in playoff chase
LEWISTON – Maintaining control of their own destiny in the chase for a sectional playoff berth, the Albion Purple Eagles edged past the Lew-Port Lancers 14-6 this evening in a key B North Division game.
Albion improves to 3-2 in B-North competition while Lew-Port slips to 2-3. The Purple Eagles close out the B North campaign next Friday by hosting rival Medina which is at 2-2 heading into Saturday afternoon’s game at 2-2 Bennett.
“We feel very fortunate to get out with a win,”Albion coach Tony Osburn said. “It was Lew-Port’s Hoemcoming and Senior Night and we came off the bus and couldn’t get anything going in the first half. Lew-Port really controlled the opening half but we tightened up in the second half and shut them out which was big.”
Lew-Port did grab a 6-0 lead in the second quarter on a 1 yard touchdown run by Carmine Zurillo.
However, Albion answered right back with a 10 yard touchdown run by Ed Wolfe and an extra point kick by Mike Eldred to take the lead for good at 7-6. Wolfe did yeoman work on the drive carrying the ball nine times for a total of 58 yards. He had a total of 125 yards rushing on the night on 10 carries.
The Albion defense also came up big in the first half stopping one Lew-Port drive on downs and the 20 and halting another at the 20 on an interception by Dominic DiCureia.
It remained at tight 7-6 contest until there was just 1:41 to go in the fourth quarter when Manny Thompson intercepted a Lew-Port pass and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown.
“In a close game like that one it very often comes down to a couple of big plays and we were able to get the pick six,” Osburn said.
The Purple Eagles defense then stopped Lew-Port’s last ditch drive as Des Blackmon had an interception on the game’s final play.
Steven Stauss led the Albion defense with 12 tackles. Brett Zicari was in on 11 stops as Kollin Reynolds, Jon Trembley and Aaron Mulroy were each in on nine tackles.
